How to remove an old vinyl wrap off a vehicle...the easy way!

- The simple way to remove a baked out old vinyl wrap off a vehicle. After nearly a week of trying, I figured out the easiest, least expensive way and it works!
Just a quick tip to those that are looking through comments for other recommendations. We do this for a living. Professional shops use steamers to hydrate and loosen the old vinyl. Won’t bake on the adhesive, and much less destructive to the paint.
dude I've been removing a clear plastic wrap that has been on my car for the past 4 years. I had it shipped to me. It's not messing the paint up at all, but it's hands down the most frustrating crap I've ever done. It's only on the hood, front bumper, fenders and mirrors. There is just some residual adhesive gunk in a few areas. Any suggestions on what to use to get the gunk off? I don't think it's vinyl, bc it's not peeling or cracking at all. It comes off really easy once you get the peel started, but it tears every now and then and that's when it becomes a YUGE PITA. Any tips? lol
it was put on the car to protect the front end whilst being shipped to me. Presumably from the shipping courier I used...
maybe it's PPF, I guess?

I was in the same position. Had a 6-7 year wrap on my car and looked beat to hell. Instead of the heat gun, I used a steamer plus some scrapers and it was like cutting through butter.
what kind of steamer ?

Do you have a make/model suggestion for the steamer? I used a small one and it didn't help.

I think I caught a quick glance of what it says and I'm a big fan myself. Secondly, I bought recently a 2018 Golf R one of my dream cars within reason and with that being said it had an old vinyl wrap only on the top roof area, someone had heavily used the top roof area and it was all old and cracked and baked. What's going to be impossible it took me 2 hours to get about a square foot taken off and that was painstaking

the heat gun gets it too hot. Use a hairdryer and the glue stays on the vinyl

Thank for the advice. I’m trying to remove some vinyl wrap on my motorhome and I discovered that it actually has several different layers on the front cap. The biggest area has some really old vinyl that is super thin and very difficult to remove.

I've got 6 yo cracked vinyl on roof. I was quoted $4-5k by a body shop to remove it. Most of that is labor. It's a horrible messy hard job that can take days. Some places won't even quote. I heard about using a hand held portable steamer, melts the glue and easy to remove. They are around $100. I might try it.
Did you ever try it? Someone else mentioned soaking it in WD-40 to remove the glue, which I'm going to try soon.

I have a wrap on my hood and been contemplating on replacing it, but it has been on the hood for a long time. I was thinking of just replacing the hood.

You can't tip it to a usable angle without losing the water inside the steamer. How did you make it work?

Thank you so much.. my car too the hood and the top are baked looks like shit. The black wrap does not shine back up. I wish i never had it wrapped it rusted the top underneath the wrap. My wrap looks horrible.. if you don't have a garage do not wrap it. The sun will completely ruin it.

It was a lie that wraps are safe and cheaper then paint. What a scam these wraps turned out to be.
How much does a rap usually cost
4-8 thousand dollars. More than paint...
I just priced a wrap for my E150 van - $3500 for the entire van. Cheaper than a paint job.
For the price you might as well just paint a vehicle.

Awesome video, the plastic blade works wonders. I've found that if you soak the wrap in WD 40 for about a day, the solvent seeps into the film and actually dissolves the adhesive. Comes off really easy and doesn't leave any residue behind. 😃
I do the same but I do the method he had done but it does mean you will need to wash the car really well afterwards as it does leave an oily film
Just quick question, do you use heat gun after soaking old cracked vinyl in WD40? Or does it pealing of without any heat??
@flavio17021979 I didn't use a heat gun as the temperature was pretty high and the panel was warmer than the ambient temp which made it pretty easy to peel off.
Now if you're in a colder area, I can see a heat gun being an advantage. I would only suggest to warm the panel and not get it really hot as my panel temp if I had to guess was probably 90° F.

@flavio17021979 No problem, another thing to consider would be to practice patients. Grab an edge and peel slowly at about a 30 to 45 degree angle. Once you get a nice piece started, use a plastic blade or an old bank card to "filet" the wrap from the panel. Goodluck my friend. 👍😀
My trucks hood has had a vinyl wrap on it with a particular design for years now in this intense southern east coast sun and i want to take off the old wrap and apply a new wrap because it's starting to fade and chip now. I'm just afraid once I start taking off the old wrap that there will be an outline on the hoods paint job of where the vinyl decal sat from the sun fading the exposed paint around the edges of decal and the paint that was under decal will be darker than the parts not covered by decal. Then I'd have to make sure I got the same exact new decal as the old one to cover those darkened areas that the old decal caused. If i don't get the new decal exactly in place of where the old decal was then you'll see the different shade of paint on the hood some darker some lighter. You know what I'm talking about? Is there anything i can do about the paint shades to make them more even before i apply new decal? Besides paying for a new paint job that I can't afford lol.
my entire wrx got hit by sun damage and also my neighbor had a broken sprinkler hitting my car everyday so half the car is cracked wrap! this helped me so much thank you sir
lol that paint is ruined all over that car now. i feel bad for anyone who got suckered into putting "wraps" on their car. its a fad that is coming to an end thankfully. especially when people see the horrors of removal. its worse than window tint,
It's definitely not coming to an end. There's much higher quality wraps out there now, that are still just as popular as before. You can't tell the difference between a high quality wrap and paint, now. It doesn't damage the paint at all, if you remove it properly.. it's just adhesive. If anything, it protects the paint from sun damage, etc. I have a 10+ year old wrap on the roof of my car and the paint is going bad on areas where the wrap is _missing_ not where the wrap is. The areas where the wrap still is, is protected. Also, I removed my old window tint with a razor blade with zero issues, not sure what you mean by "worse than window tint". I'm starting to think it's just your method of removal that's ruining things
erasers are for decals, they work good without damaging paint on metal. You have to have the air tool to make them work proper, the right rpm.
I'm removing vinyl wrap from an ambulance that I purchased, luckily on the roof they only put it on the sides. Once you get above the radius onto the roof that's where they ended it. But thanks for the advice I hope my heat gun does the trick! 👌 I like the regulation/liberty sign you got there. I wonder if I could find a flag version of that 👍
Whells work only on metal surfaces, you shouldn't use them on plastic.
A steam wall paper stripper would have worked.
Looks like a nightmare and it will scratch the original paint.

Imagine putting $100 of plastic on a car that costs $4000 and three days of labor to remove ALL to avoid a $200 repray paint job. This is the logical world we live in.
Im going to put an insane 3 dimensional vinyl on top of the vinyl... There solved it.
you have no clue it would cost you way more than $200 unless your buying rattle cans and doing it your self. get out of the logical world you live in and step into the real world.....

Ha ha. This is brilliant. I just knocked on someone’s front door. I want to buy his van that never moves. We are a long way apart on price. I mentioned to him how hard the cracked wrap would be to remove. Hopefully he’s looking it up and adjusting his price. Thanks for the vid mate. I can see how frustrated you were.
I'd soak it in a lacquer thinner for like an hour and then scrape. You're going to want to clay and wheel and wax that whole thing after you're done.
Man i had my tahoe plasti dipped a few years ago. And they didnt put it on thick enough, when i went to remove it after a year, it was peeling off like little pieces of fish food. Ended up using goof off and goo gone. Sprayed it on and let it sit for a few minutes and its scraped off pretty easily with a credit card. But this is definitely a nightmare. Took a good 3 days to get off
calendered vinyl is hard to remove after 3 years. cast vinyl, I have no problem peeling it.

A pressure washer with an aggressive tip will knock it off
I tried a pressure washer, even using hot water, and it still was not efficient enough. This Goof Off method was more efficient on my hood but I still wish I knew what type of Steamer the pros use. I was seeking estimates from two wrap shops in Columbus, OH and neither shop wanted to do the work or even provide an estimate so I'm in the middle of doing it myself. My wrap has been on for 12 years. Most of it came off fairly easily with just a heat gun. Now, I'm battling the hood and the roof. The method in this video has worked the best for me so far on the hood but I may try WD-40 on the roof. Not sure yet. I tried a product called Vinyl Off and I do NOT recommend that one because it destroyed my plastic headlight lenses and discolored the black plastic grill and even leaves streaks on the paint. Maybe it works on boats but I would never recommend it for a car that has plastic and/or rubber parts - and even damages paint.
Break cleaner works better then googone but be careful what u use it on
It s not really helpful. Don’t wrap your car at all. I wrapped on my older van 3 years. Took me hrs to remove. Fuck the wrap
