১৮৮৫ সালে মূলত কাঁচা পাট নদীপথে কলকাতায় আনার জন্য ঢাকা স্টেট রেলওয়ে নামে খ্যাত ময়মনসিংহ থেকে ঢাকা হয়ে নারায়ণগঞ্জ পর্যন্ত ১৪৪ কিমি দীর্ঘ মিটারগেজ রেললাইন স্থাপন করা হয়। এসময় এই লাইনের স্টেশন হিসেবে শ্রীপুর রেলওয়ে স্টেশন তৈরি করা হয়।
