  • Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) was an english statesman and leader. He led the puritans as general to victory in the civil war against King Charles I and gave all authority to the parliament. But in 1653 he took the power himself and ruled as lord protector over England, Scotland and Ireland. Under his reign England flourished and its rise to world power began. Although his reign lasted only for five years - until his death in 1658 - it has changed England forever.

@Patrick Beaudry what I’m about to say you wont the agree with... of them all I say Trump is the least corrupt. He has only been in politics 4 years he doesn’t have the connections for underhand dealings. He hasn’t been in power for decades and decades. Half of the nation and 90% of the media was agaisnt him. But I think he felt he could do some good. That he SAW all the corruption in the Government and felt an outsider could purge that infection from the seats of power. It’s way the Left the most corrupt side of our nation dispise him so

Oliver Cromwell is a more complex person then most people know just by glancing. First he tried to keep Charles I on the throne after they won the civil war as Oliver believed England needed a king. Cromwell on two occasions when his own side called for the kings head , actually stopped them and tried to make the King reconsider to create a more constrained monarchy (more constitutional). Charles I on the other hand believed he had the right to rule anyway he wanted to which would have been okay, except he angered a lot of people. Charles I removed popular social reforms his father created, Married a Catholic who was French and created a tax without parliament consent. Again Charles I ruled completely differently then what his father did, who happened to show more constraint in comparison with parliament.
This is not to say Oliver was a nice guy by any means, as when he took power he was too weak to contain the factions in his own government. Leading Cromwell to avoided faction tensions by giving into their demands. This lead to the ban on drinking, and brothels to please members of his puritans brothers when he had "over looked it " . As well as a war in Ireland when both the country and people where weary of bloodshed. At the start it seemed everything he did within his own government was to try and avoid one faction or another starting a coup. One thing Oliver was right about, England needed a King or at least someone strong enough to hold powers in check. Oliver was far from the man to do although he clearly tried.

Truly one of Thee most divisive men in history. For the people of the people, incorruptible. Lord protector. But also destructive, war like and tortured. I can't decide on my opinion of him.

Is it possible that just before he disbanded Parliament that he saw the value of having a king or a queen? I kind of get that impression that he saw the value after I realized that when you elect a whole bunch of people, they quite often times break promises and stab their own constituents in the back.

Well he basically became like Charles in the end so yes. Cromwell wasn't a huge reformer like some others in the New Model Army, he wanted to make peace with the King originally but after the 2nd and 3rd English Civil Wars he deemed Charles and all of his bloodline untrustworthy so moved England to being a republic. Also worth noting Parliament in 1650 wasn't exactly democratic the Lords was not inferior to the Commons and the Commons was elected by landholders alone.

They really didn't care about historical accuracy in this film at all huh? Sir Thomas Fairfax wasn't an MP in the Long Parliament. He was Cromwell's superior officer in the New Model Army and it was only Fairfax's retirement that allowed Cromwell to rise to being the supreme political and military leader of England. Certainly not a supporter of the Long Parliament's or the Rump Parliament's power.

Free in what way? Abolished a king because he disolved Parliament. Cromwell took power and abolished Parliament, how Ironic. No one is free, simple fact, freedom is an ilusion.
And I'm British trhough and through.

On 20 April 1653, he dismissed the Rump Parliament by force, setting up a short-lived nominated assembly known as Barebone's Parliament before being invited by his fellow leaders to rule as Lord Protector of England (which included Wales at the time), Scotland, and Ireland from 16 December 1653.[4] As a ruler, he executed an aggressive and effective foreign policy. He died from natural causes in 1658 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. The Royalists returned to power along with King Charles II in 1660, and they had his corpse dug up, hung in chains, and beheaded.
Cromwell is one of the most controversial figures in the history of the British Isles, considered a regicidal dictator by historians such as David Sharp,[5] a military dictator by Winston Churchill,[6] and a hero of liberty by John Milton, Thomas Carlyle, and Samuel Rawson Gardiner. His tolerance of Protestant sects did not extend to Catholics; his measures against them in Ireland have been characterized by some as genocidal or near-genocidal,[7] and his record is harshly criticized in Ireland.[8] He was selected as one of the ten greatest Britons of all time in a 2002 BBC poll.[9

Its got a choral component but there are no words that I can hear. (Think 'Ray Conniff') It's possible that ,late on, someone thought that backing music should support Cromwell's speech and they chose a piece that could drown out even a loudmouth like Richard Harris.
