In this final installment in the current Workshops Online series we take a look at Milky Way Panoramas. These can be as simple as we like or they can be very complex, however the principles remain the same. We visit some locations where I've shot various panoramas and we explore my mindset regarding composition and settings for those.
After that we'll actually edit 2 different panoramas so hopefully this will explain my process a little better than simply talking about it. Don't forget to download the free Raw files via the link above.
Thank you so much for your wonderful support and encouragement during this series. I've been absolutely blown away by your comments and financial contribution to this project. I really hope you got something out of the series and I'm always happy to hear from you moving forward. Thanks again.

Hi Richard, thanks again for making your Workshops Online series available to us on RUclips. I still have to get my head around everything, but it is great to try something and then refer back to the video lessons & hope to learn from your mistakes and apply next time what you have learnt. I am looking forward to the time i do have some "muscle memory" as your videos are always so informative and easy to understand but out there in the dark it always seems harder to remember. I bet you are now looking forward to getting out to do something creative for yourself and look forward to your new videos

    Hallo Richard,
thanks a lot for your work shop series.
8 great episodes. The only bad thing about it is: they are over.
Never done panos so far, but I will give them a try very soon I guess.
Thanks for your passion and inspiration.
Thanks to you I photographed already quite a few great light painted nightscapes.
    Keep up your great work.
I hope you are allowed to start your real life workshops very soon.

Thanks again Richard, not only for making this content available online but also affordable. I enjoyed watching the series and having access to the raw files adds another dimension compared to your regular tutorials. I hope that you are rewarded down the road with new subscribers and a greater demand for your on-site workshops. Personally, I’m even more eager to attend a workshop on location now - not because the online version isn’t good, it’s great, but because I’ve learnt that it’s not always as simple as it looks on video! There is simply no substitute for a hands-on exchange. I also feel better prepared to get more out of a workshop now having gone through the online course. Anyway, let’s see how things go, looks like it’s still going to be a while before I can travel back home to Oz. Good luck.

Thanks Richard for sharing the pictures. They can be very handy for practising on editing night scape images. It is not that easy to shoot something similar here in Norway (too much light now) and the Milky Way core is never visible, but we'll try to get some decent images when the days are shorter in September/October if it's not too windy, cloudy and cold and close to new moon (I think I can start praying now for these conditions to happen at the same time from now...). Impressive shots, by the way, as always !!

Personally I have never had much success stiching nightscapes with photoshop ( although it may now be better ). Perhaps not so much for astro, but a longer lens is great for pannos because the images contain greater detail and data than a wide lens. Once you couple the images with panno overlapping, the final result is data-rich image which gives one more scope for post production.

Excellent series, Richard. Thought provoking video about panoramic images. I liked your encouragement to be detailed, consistent and let muscle memory kick in when dark. All the more reason to be a bit more regimented when producing a panorama.
My understanding is that every lens has a potential parallax issue if it is being rotated. The greater the focal length the greater the potential for error. Why the concern? Stitching errors emerge in areas beyond the capacity of software to create a seamless stitch. We see it in our images and vids illustration.
Acceptable to use cloning corrections and other compensation means? Ideal? Maybe not.
Definitively solving the parallax issue, quantifying image percentage overlap and minimal number of images with either lateral and vertical rotation of the camera can be planned out to eliminate stitch related artifacts. We desire simplicity and minimizing financial impact. Fortunately, there are pieces of equipment that help solve the parallax issue, allow seamless stitching and overall cleaner panorama (or mosaic) images. Worth the cost? Always a personal choice.
Would love to see video on Nodal Ninja use or other means that improves predictability, smooths capture process and ups quality of final image.
TY again for an excellent series.

Thanks a lot for watching Blame. I think the paralax issues are worse when objects are closer to the camera. I don't generally shoot panos with close foreground. The nodal pano heads do help in that regard. Lots of overlap between shots helps with stitching also.

Hi Richard I have been following you for a long time now. I hope that running this online workshop has worked out for you. Regarding the Parallax error. you could purchase a nodel slide which will allow you to align the camera sensor with the centre of the tripod thus eliminating the error. Your passion for this genre of photography has always shown through along with your genuine quest to help, . I went out tonight and employed the techniques from this and some of your other videos and am relatively happy with the outcome (even though it was a full moon, was more practicing really). I am wondering however if you have any suggestions for sharpening the focus of the foreground when I have the focus set for perfect stars? I'm a photography and photoshop novice for context.

Thanks a lot for watching Black Sheep. You'll notice in most of my videos I shoot separate images of the foreground and when I do that I'll stop down the aperture and lower the iso to get sharper and cleaner images. If the foreground subject isn't very close then I'll leave the lens at infinity focus as the focus plane broadens when stopping down the aperture. Hope that helps.

Afternoon Richard, another great video, love the series, question, you used the in built level to level the camera when doing a pano, when you do a vertical pano you leveled the base image then tilted the lens up, do you re level each shift of the lens or just rely on the software to pick it up?

I have found that when I start the light painting, I have to be really quick, such as a quick on and off on the subject...due to the fact that we're using high ISO, otherwise it gets blown out...do you find this as well???

Hi Richard. Excellent as always. I have two questions: when yo create a panorama stacking either the background and the foreground with several shots how you deal with the Star movement due the time it takes among all the sky shots? Is that something Starry landscape stacker solves? The second question is: in the second panorama you edited in the video the light we can see with the trees and the house is from the Moon? Or artificial light ? Or you did some light painting? Thank you again Richard. See you mate.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard

Thanks for watching Mario. I don't typically stack separate foregrounds when doing panoramas. The panorama software deals with the movement between shots . .I don't know the science but it works. I did light painting for every shot to keep it consistent, there was no moonlight at all.

Richard thank you so much for this series truely inspirational. I have one question around shooting in moonlight which you mentioned in this video. I went out a couple of nights ago to shoot an old barn in Somerset UK when the moon was a narrow cresent at 37% luminosity. In my first few images the sky was totally washed out by the moonlight and I couldn't find a set of camera settings that would allow the barn to be shot illuminated but then the sky dark enough to see the stars - even with exposure blending. When the moon set I was able to get some great material of the Milky Way and light painted Barn that has produced an image I'm really happy with, but what advice would you offer for shooting in moonlight - is it as simple as 37% moon is too bright?

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
      @nightscapeimages.richard  4 года назад

Thanks a lot for watching Stephen. I find moonlight to be variable and quite tricky to judge correctly. Depending on the time of year the moon is either higher or lower in the sky. So a 37% moon when higher in the sky will wash out the stars more than when it's lower. I don't usually like shooting when there is more than about 30% moon for the very reason you've described.

Thanks Richard for this fantastic workshop, I really appreciate all the information you brought during the last 8 weeks. Regarding the panoramas I would like to understand about the process of light painting and returning to the camera to change the position for the next shot. It seems it takes additional seconds for each shot but the skies are continuing moving, so the time between the first and the last shot will be longer and the stars in different position. Does this affect the final result? In the example of the 22 shots panorama, with 15 seconds of exposition time, considering you are able to return to the camera and change the position in 5 seconds, the last shot will be around 7 minutes later than the first. How do you manage the movement of the skies in the panorama? Thanks again for all your efforts in sharing your knowledge in this subject.

    • @nightscapeimages.richard
