I don’t get or agree with a few of these comments, of how they are trying to “get” the song and what the intention was. I sincerely appreciate the honesty, of two former addicts, working their way through this song. Some of you just need to chill out. There’s a whole history with this band, and their inspiration (which was a combination of the band’s founder Syd Barrett, combined with Roger Waters’ childhood and losing his dad in World War 2), and the complications of being a rock star, yada yada. David Gilmour basically wrote this song, he sings the chorus, the more angelic voice, the guitar solo. Waters is the darker presence in the verses. At some stage in this song’s lifetime it was called “The Doctor.” This is the first time I’ve seen one of your reactions, and I’ve seen many reactions to this song and have heard this song hundreds of times. Please don’t let the naysayers turn you off from Pink Floyd. You really should listen to a few of their albums in their entirety to get the whole concept. This album (The Wall) has so many layers, and how our childhood traumas can create this “wall” around yourself. You two are right on. And congrats on your recovery!
This band has always been associated with drug use, which is only partially true. But what I find amazing as someone who has also had struggles in the past, is that their music makes you feel like you are in that place/space, but you don’t need to be on anything to feel that way. Their music is just pure perfection in that way.

You mean the drugs of Syd Barrett, the founder of Pink Floyd. No, that song dedicated to him is called «Shine On You Crazy Diamond»

Whilst on tour, Roger Waters the Bass Player was taken ill with food poisoning, the local Dr gave him something to help him with that so he could do the gig that evening. On the album The Wall he used the event as inspiration for this song which is Pink, the lead character having a nervous breakdown in a hotel room and the Dr giving him a barbiturate to get him ready for the show, It's the bands manager accompanied by the Dr saying 'Hello, hello, is there anybody in there. at this point he has not benn injected with the tranq' that comes in verse 2. 'Just a little pinprick'. It would help a lot if you saw the movie, all this stuff will become very apparent. it's got nothing whatsoever to do with heroin.
Yes, 'Shine on you crazy diamond' was written directly about Syd Barratt, the guy who actually formed the band originally, who fell ill with mental health issues. he was replaced in the band by Dave Gilmour the guitarist.

The song embarks on an emotional journey into one's past. David Gilmour wrote the music while he was working on a solo album in 1978. He brought it to The Wall sessions and Roger Waters wrote lyrics for it. While many people thought the song was about drugs, Waters claims it is not. According to Waters it's based on both a childhood experience of illness and another experience of unbearable stomach pains he got before a concert.
However, In the movie "The Wall", this plays in a scene where the main character, a rock star named "Pink," loses his mind and enters a catatonic drug and alcohol induced state before a show. The Doctor arrives and injects Pink with counter acting drugs. The doctor believes that he is in pain, but Pink tells him "There is no pain." He completely exists in a state of mind-numbing peace from the drugs as is expressed in the lyrics, "A distant ship, smoke on the horizon" as he is floating in his state of drug-filled peace. He is … “Comfortably Numb.”
The main theme of this song is the distance between our minds and the perception of reality because of artificial relief.
    Great Song.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"...
I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. Hard to explain how awesome that moment was in my life. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen.
I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

As a Pink Floyd fan for years, there is no one absolute correct interpretation of their songs. The beauty of the musical interludes are they speak to us on an individual basis. While I can understand the drug interpretation (especially your background), I personally see 2 other interpretations, depression and complacency. As I have several family members struggling with depression and on medication to help, the images described fits their situation well. I also see an interpretation of someone with childhood dreams who gets caught up with experiences of life that squash those childhood dreams, and now they are just surviving day by day rather than truly living the life they dreamt of. They have become comfortably numb...

Congrats on sobriety, , my last time using actual H was 26 years ago, I'm 46 now.. Started using for a LOT of different reasons, the one being there was war going on in my country at the time (Croatia), the other reason being the crowd i chose myself to surround with, and the most important reason, I'm bipolar (extreme case, VERY rapid changing of the moods, couple of times a day, and I had to take something to stop that cycle, cause it was a nightmare trying to handle this on my own.. I inherited bipolar disorder from my dad, his method was a little different than mine, he devoted his life to drinking, till the hard liquor took his eyes, he died 2 months ago, I'm sorry to say..
Full disclosure, I'm not COMPLETELY clean, I'm on the suboxone maintenance therapy, small dose of 2mg per day, plus bipolar medication...and there's one thing that's left from the past, weed, the only thing that really helps me.. In that 26 years, the last 11 I'm TOTALLY isolated from civilization, had to turn my back on people, except 3 friends, and few that are working with me, I have an amazing job, I work for the county, outside jobs in nature, lawns, hedges, collapsed trees, everything that's an issue, they send me to deal with that, and knowing my condition, they mostly send me alone, or with one person max.. I transformed in those last 11 years, yeah, I've been clean from H and all other hard drugs for 26, but that was not my biggest problem, bipolar takes the cake, tormenting me! Living surrounded by woods and nature, on highly elevated position, I was like born again! I have my HUGE garden, where I spend most of my free time, growing my own food, and without exaggerating, I produce more food than two whole households combine, and I'm alone! Very handy in this times we live in!
Well, the example of my bipolar condition is up there, in manic state (which i love), I tend to go on and on :) If only that was the only state, the other side is much more painful, despair would be the closest description..
Anyway, ehat I really tried to say, that song, Comfortably Numb, saved my life! I was in the car alone, and I surrendered to VERY dark thoughts, VERY close to ending my sorrows by ending my life, just thought to drive off the cliff, in the final blaze of madness, just to end that endless cycle of bipolar mania and depression, and then, on the radio, Comfortably Numb started.. I was totally sucked in the song, it was like pink floyd were singing about me, and then, the David Gilmour's solo came!In the middle of it, tears started, I was SO moved by it, it filled my very soul with new hope! Later, friend gave me VHS tape with Pulse concert, and when i saw THAT, I was mad with happiness! You MUST check this out, the live version, you WON'T be sorry - ruclips.net/video/vi7cuAjArRs/видео.html

Comfortably Numb is from The Wall album.... their 11th studio album released in November 1979.
The Wall is almost an autobiography of Roger Water’s life up until the mid 1970’s.
In the movie, released 1982, Pink is the main character, a rock musician ( Roger Waters ).
Confortably Numb is about an episode when Roger was in serious pain before a concert and could not perform.
A doctor was called in and gave him a pep injection...... eased the pain, but made him totally numb physically and mentally.
He could not feel anything , especially his hands and fingers needed to play the bass guitar.
It is recommended to listen to the album as one song..... it is his life story from never meeting his dad ( killed at Anzio , WW2, 5 months after Rogers birth, through school being treated as a sub human ( single mum and no money ), the Dickensian school system and society post WW2...... very hard in England..... no food, homes and other buildings in ruins, food rationing etc...... and his mother suffocating him with love and fear of losing him as well.
Mentally, Roger built the Wall to keep life out, but in his mind, the Wall was built by his own mother and society to torment him.... to keep him trapped.
It is best to listen to the album first and then watch the movie to understand the album and the songs.
Do not watch the movie first...... you won’t understand and think it a sick mess and waste of film.
With knowledge of the music and songs , the movie makes sense ...... and makes the songs essential to your life.
The song is in 3 parts x 2.... so 6 parts.
Verse, chorus, solo, verse, chorus, solo.
Roger sings the verse as himself and the doctor.
French horns are used to create the musical ambience of eerie dread or numbness.
The chorus is sung by David Gilmour......violins are used to cheer you up with pleasant, warm , happy music.
The solos...... that is just pure David Gilmour.
Renowned for listening to what the others put together, then just playing what he feels over the top of it and in the breaks. lol
I already seen your Time review.
For Time and the Great Gig , the recorded versions are best as I already explained.
For all other Pink Floyd, the live concerts are best...... they are brilliant musicians.
The 1994 Pulse concert is considered by many to be the best Rock / POP concert of all time.
The 5 minute guitar solo to finnish Comfortably Numb as now considered by most to be the greatest guitar solo in history.
I don’t agree, I prefer the 1970 solo by Terry Kath at Tanglewood..... 25 or 6 to 4 by Chicago.
    Another brilliant video to watch.

I can't bear it when people try to analyze songs and study the lyrics to try to discover what the writers may have meant with their lyrics etc. You're offering up a prime example of how to a completely ruin the listening experience. As many prominent songwriters, Paul McCartney, Freddie Mercury and, I think, George Michael have said, just let the song wash over you, enjoy it, and let it mean whatever you want it to mean to you.

You don't know the joke... But...
Who is Pink? Funniest thing you could have said!
Years earlier PF recorded a track "Have a Cigar" about a music Executive who claims to be a huge fan but then says "oh and by the way, which ones Pink?" Clearly he has no idea about the band.
So for the album "The Wall", which is the story of a "fictional" Rock star, naturally they picked the name Pink. Mr Pink Floyds life is a decent into insanity. This echoes the story of Pink Floyd founding band member Syd Barrett mixed with the life of Roger Waters.
