Just catching up with your videos life gets in the way some times. The Roman fibulas are beautiful one of my favourite things to find so tactile 🤩 never had a pipe tamper yet 🤞this year 😁
Alex, I agree with you, the PAS have got it wrong on the hammer item. Notice how the head of the hammer is slightly mushroomed out due to light impact, I think this is an early cobbler's hammer. A pipe tamper is always flat on the end.
Thanks Stu - good knowledge - esp on the usual flatness on the end of the tamper and I think you are right ... Back to the drawing board! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander

The format you use on your episodes is spectacular. Going from the field to home and back explaining your incredible finds is very enjoyable particularly having the zoom lenses to see close up views in detail. Most of the channels just hold up a coin in the field and the only thing you can tell about it is that it’s silver or copper. I think you might have a small furniture tack hammer. I have found many small tacks over the years, I’m sure you have as well. Good luck 🍀 and be safe. 🇺🇸👋
Thank you very much for all that Gary it is much appreciated! And yes, it might well explain all the tacks we find!!!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
That is a claw hammer for sure. My guess due to the size would possibly be a cobbler’s tool for making or repairing shoes? Anyhow Keep finding the most amazing things on RUclips! Your#1

That Pipe Tamper is more likely to be a small hobbyist hammer. As a Pipe smoker I cannot see what the v-notch would be used for on a pipe. Plus most tampers would not need a handle, as it would only get in the way. That is a hammer. It could be a modelling or furniture hammer for fixing fabrics to furniture. Great video once again, informative as always.
I think you are right - in fact no-one thinks its a tamper apart from the PAS and a couple of guys on the detecting hub i will now reopen my discussion there! And thank you for your knowledge concerning the use of tampers - very interesting and helpful! All the Best, Alexander
Oh wow you do put my finds to shame, I'm convinced that whenever I swing my metal detector over a target it transforms into a bottle cap, but your targets transform into ancient brooches, 😂 anyway love watching your content keep it up 👍👍

Lovely finds (I still think it's the top of an old hammer, personally!). You are right about the FLO's - it's dangerous to think they know everything. Most of the time they rely on looking stuff up in books or online, just as we do. The fact they've done a degree and been on a few archaeological digs before getting the job doesn't make them experts. The last one we had in my county had only ever worked on Roman and Saxon digs and she admitted she didn't have the first clue about more modern stuff. Knowing how to interpret the soil layers on a Roman Villa site doesn't make you an expert in identifying artefacts.
Loved your pink hat - keep it! You really get excited at finding all you do find, Ally + then I get lost +can't remember what you've found. 76 trying to keep up with you! But I do enjoy your detecting keep well, can I pray for you?
That pipe tamper! I was internally screaming 'its a hammer'! A very tiny hammer, but after looking them up I guess it is a pipe tamper. I wonder what the prying part was used for? The brooches were wonderful.
Hi Alex, great video as always. Upon your tips about cleaning coins I did one myself. It is amazing how good it works and very exiting to see the result. And yes it takes ages and ages
The broaches were awesome but the best part was....you finally found a hammer!! Sorry but I had to!! Well I hope you are doing good...looks like you are not missing anything out detecting either! Holler back!!
Ha! Yes Tim, I hadn't thought of that!!! It needs more research that thing... Hope all well with you - I am on the Shetland Islands this week it is Stunning - may even manage a detect if I get time! Hope all well with you old buddy!
Smashing stuff Alex, loving the teleportation ☄️jumps back to base, we’re all Trekkers deep down🖖🏽 . Wonderful finds and I’m also with you on the pipe stocker, just looks too old to be just that mundane ( yes I know it does look like a hammer) but if so perhaps it was used to put those hob nails in the boots🤔, hey to Task for me, chat anon, Best G🤗🙋🏻♂️🙏
It was really cold BC I couldn't feel my fingers.. the wind comes over the Urals and straight hits us sometimes.. or so it feels !!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
Thats very kind Darren and something that sounds fun - I rush round rather a lot but if i could tie it in with something... thank you and hope all well!
Wow, you had again, some spectacular finds! The piece you found that looks like a nail puller actually looks like a hammer head. like there would’ve been a handle attached to it just like a modern day hammer. Whatever it is, it’s pretty cool ! It definitely looks like ithas some age to it. thanks for another video, as always I really enjoy them. Give Tasci a scratch! ~Paul OK I should’ve watch the rest of the video before commenting lol I see it really is a hammer now lol
Great vidio"s Alex. You found more on that field in one day than my mate has ever found in 40 yrs of detecting. Psssst you jumped back to HQ 3x and still forgot you"r coat. HA.
Sorry for the lateness in viewing... busy bee here in the USA... You are "Hitting the Ball Out of the Park" as we say here... baseball term meaning hitting a home run on first pitch to the batter at plate... this Summer will be stellar finds galore, no doubts!
Thanks Steve - I am surprised there are so few coins... and everything is quite spread out so not syre about a Villa Site but definitely seen Roman activity.... hope all well and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
Awesome finds Alex. How in a hell , these finds looks like lost yesterday. My finds are sadly damaged and broken soo many times from the plow. Wish you all the best and keep going. I love your channels ❤ greets from germany
Thanks Jan - A lot of the places i look are like that too - the videos where i find nice things the soil and the plough tend to be kinder and some of the pasture i search has been untouched for centuries more or less... hope all well and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
One of the few things I don't have Claire( German, Scottish, Italian , Welsh, American great grandmother...!) Hope all well with you - thank you as always! X
22:08 your right it looks like a hammer 🔨!😊 amazing video as always Alexander! Out of interest how many items have you got going through the treasure process?
Two.... its been over 3 years and they have now gone quiet which means they have probably lost them.... I always email the coroner if I find anything that I should declare and then its up to them to get back to me if they can be bothered but I have done my bit! As you can probably tell Mark, I am not very keen on the whole treasure process! Hope all well! And thanks for watching!
@@HolzHammerSagas don’t blame you mate! It’s in a right mess lately especially in my county where all these items have been “stolen” in Cumbria! Brilliant video as always mate your finds are out of this world!😊
I love your channel. Your humor is wonderful. 🙂You have an amazing amount of luck with the broaches. Your hammer head is gorgeous! I can see it on a warrior/ metal-smiths' neck as a pendant, even knowing it is a hammer. The rounded edge of the hammer head is what originally threw me. Normally, you hit things with a metal that is harder than the object but not too much harder. Also, how would a tobacco round the edge of the metal? But no matter. Someday a futuristic pagan will find it and make it into a pendant, creating a whole story around it. Which will make you right. 😉
Well thank you Andy for the suggestion - seems a lot of people are suggesting similar... hope all well and thank you 🙏 for watching! All the Best, Alexander
Considering these broaches were mainly for holding togas on and the metal they are made from you would think they'd be all pretty plain but totally the opposite, they truly are stunning in design and detail, I think I'd be just as happy to find one of those as I would be if I found a coin. I also do love imagining who owned them and how they got there? Was it people working the land or was it once a temporary camp for roman soldiers or was it someone having a picnic in a meadow who lost it?? I suppose the possibilities are endless.
Fabulous session.Once again!! How do you do it??! (must be that pact with the devil ;-) But seriously, as always, informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work. BIG fan Marek from Poland.
Good grief! A second exact Scandinavian and two Fibula's? With all the little extras, it was a bonus day for you. And I just cannot see how that would be a pipe tamper. Just does not fit all the ones I have seen others pull out. Tasci with his new toy is so cute.
Tasci loves his little squeaky ball he is such a character he carries it everywhere and when he is outside with it tosses it up with his mouth and chases it endlessly - he's not that interested if I throw it for him! Hope all well Cyndye thanks for watching! I agree with you on the tamper...
Thank you for another very enjoyable half hour Alex. Your bronze 'claw hammer': I agree with you, it is old and does have the patina-look of 500-1000 years easily. My first erroneous thought was a toffee hammer used in sweet shops like Thornton's but even though it is the right size there is no need for a 'claw' for breaking up toffee! I'm afraid I don't agree with PAS, I can't see it being a pipe tamper, again, what would the claw be for, certainly not cleaning the pipe bowl. I hope you find out what it actually is soon eh. On the subject of your second camera (I know a bit more about photography than I do detecting), you didn't quite describe the problem you were having but it seemed like one camera is not giving the correct exposure, is that right? Obviously I don't know if you are using manual exposure (always the best choice) or auto-exposure? Maybe that second camera is not so good at auto-exposure and wants manual exposure? I know I know, when a cloud drifts over the exposure changes but manual exposure is the belt and braces way to go Alex. Thanx yet again.
You might need a claw for breaking up the toffee from your teeth Colin!!!! And thanks for the camera tips... always welcome!!!! I think its down to reluctant auto exposure... and I can do fair amount in the edit... I am going to make yu very jealous as I am currently on a Shetland Island the bird life is amazing - I don't have my proper camera and appendages with me this time but will come back in the Summer hopefully! All the Best, Alexander

@@gitmoholliday5764 lol. I think after the previous finds it had set the mental trap to lead you astray on the special guest appearance.
@@paulr6922 i think thats it; I REALLY didn't see it at all at the time!!!!!! 😂
That pipe tamper! I was internally screaming 'its a hammer'! A very tiny hammer, but after looking them up I guess it is a pipe tamper. I wonder what the prying part was used for? The brooches were wonderful.
I am not sure about the pipe tamper thing... I will give it some more research when I have time... Hope all well Tucker!
Hi Alex, great video as always. Upon your tips about cleaning coins I did one myself. It is amazing how good it works and very exiting to see the result. And yes it takes ages and ages
My God, doesn't it?! But worth the effort I think… thank you very much for watching Paul and hope all well with you! All the best, Alexander
Hammer!
Yep! I think it is ….
Amazing finds ,well done
Thanks Ivan - much appreciated! And All the Best, Alexander
Wonderful finds and I’m also with you on the pipe stocker, just looks too old to be just that mundane ( yes I know it does look like a hammer) but if so perhaps it was used to put those hob nails in the boots🤔, hey to Task for me, chat anon,
Best G🤗🙋🏻♂️🙏
Thanks Garry! Love the Trekkie emoji! 😂 And hope all well with you! All the Best!
Nadda, nope, no way would rain or cold would cause me to stop hunting with that luck streak! Great finds and hope it keeps getting better
It was really cold BC I couldn't feel my fingers.. the wind comes over the Urals and straight hits us sometimes.. or so it feels !!! Hope all well and All the Best, Alexander
Hence forth this date is proclaimed "Broach Day". Well done on the video and finds.
Its got a nice ring to it ..! Hope all well Chuck and thanks for watching!
Holtz, I'm gonna ask if you can come on a Stour Valley Search and Recovery dig in dorset.. would that be something you could attend..?
Thats very kind Darren and something that sounds fun - I rush round rather a lot but if i could tie it in with something... thank you and hope all well!
That drawing pin thing looks very similar to roman hob nails from their sandals. It seems your on a roman metal workshop site .🎉
yes could be Dan... it's planted now but something to look forward to next year! Hope all well!
Ha! I do that the whole time.. in fact i know skim through the rest of a video just in case before I ID something!!!! Thanks EMD and hope all well!
Great vidio"s Alex. You found more on that field in one day than my mate has ever found in 40 yrs of detecting. Psssst you jumped back to HQ 3x and still forgot you"r coat. HA.
ha! Rats I hadn't thought of that!!!!!! 😂 Thanks for watching Daid and hope all well! All the Best, Alexander
Some good finds there, (it's a hammer) 🙃
Yes it is !!!!! I am now convinced! Thanks Bob!
Sorry for the lateness in viewing... busy bee here in the USA... You are "Hitting the Ball Out of the Park" as we say here... baseball term meaning hitting a home run on first pitch to the batter at plate... this Summer will be stellar finds galore, no doubts!
Looking at your awesome finds there, there’s a good possibility that your on a Roman villa site?? Keep on it. Yorkshire Steve 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Steve - I am surprised there are so few coins... and everything is quite spread out so not syre about a Villa Site but definitely seen Roman activity.... hope all well and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
Yet another one of my ancestors brooches!! Good job :) Oh, and Borre is in Norway - not Sweden...
Yes, Sorry Jon - I will keep your families brooches nice and safe I promise! Hope all well!
Hello Ally well beautiful finds the brooches so very exciting, to find just amazing you are so lucky do you have a bit of Irish in you… 🤔🤔 from Claire
One of the few things I don't have Claire( German, Scottish, Italian , Welsh, American great grandmother...!) Hope all well with you - thank you as always! X
Fantastic
Thanks Peter! Hope all well!
@@HolzHammerSagas yes all good here ...i have some fantastic finds but all on fb
Hi Alex, the Viking brooches are based on the legend of the dragons entwined catching their tails! The Celtic designs come directly from the Vikings!.
I didn't know that Marilyn.... good knowledge and thank you very much! Much appreciated and hope all well! All the Best, Alexander
Brilliant video as always mate your finds are out of this world!😊
@@markjohnnojohnson5352 I know that "stolen" story is really irritating....!
Pipe tamper......nah!....holzhammer finds Thors spare hammer I reckon...😂
Yes thats it John! Thank you!
I wonder if you found a battle site from a Saxon vs Briton battle? odd so many brooches laying around. Congrats on great finds.
Could be Marion... or just luck coincidence... hope all well and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
Good vid.
Thanks Danny! Hope al well!
What do you think about a ROMAN SANDLE NAIL HAMMER? My head went crazy with that lol.
Thank you for your efforts.
Andy
Brilliant video Alexander. Amazing brooches indeed. I really like the ''hammer''? Tamper? or silversmiths tool? Anyway, all the best, John.
Someone else mooted jeweller's tool John I hadn't thought of that I will now look into it... Thank you and hope all well!
Fabulous session.Once again!! How do you do it??! (must be that pact with the devil ;-) But seriously, as always, informative and entertaining. Keep up the good work. BIG fan Marek from Poland.
Thank you Marek! Hope all ok in Poland and thanks for watching! All the Best, Alexander
