Lil context for Thordak's death. In the actual game, the VA for Vax: Liam O'Brian lost his mother to cancer not too long before that game. He said that being able to kill Thordak, the thing responsible for the death of Vex and Vax's mother, felt like being able to kill the cancer. Or something along those lines. Just a bit extra that makes that moment better.
I love Liam's anime scream in this, but "I hear the voice of my mother" from the campaign, as he's visibly holding back tears, it's something special. A real Inigo Montoya/Mandy Patinkin moment.

In the campaign Vex broke the crystal and Vax finished him off, which was much more poetic than what happened in the show despite being completely unscripted
So fun fact Kash didn't actually die fighting Thordak in their campaign he survived the whole thing. So whilst it looked like a bit of an obvious set up in this episode, to people like myself who are familiar with the lore that rewrite actually came as quite the surprise.
13:17 in the campaign, that's basically what happened - Vax and Keyleth attacked Raishan when she went for the corpse, without even questioning her. But VM had used up all their best spells and abilities on the Thordak fight, and Raishan nearly wiped the entire party out before leaving with the body. It became a point of contention with fans whether those two players were right to turn on her so quickly, especially with how bad it turned out. So the show changed it to have Raishan being the clear villain by attacking Keyleth first.
The bit with Grog coming up with the plan and blacking out was a bit of a nod to his player/VA Travis Willingham being actually smart and a good tactician but having to play dumb because Grog has an Intelligence of 6. Sort of a 4th wall break but not really ya know.
I think that really is a reference to that because I remember sometimes Travis would just say something smart and the table would be like "Wait, Grog? That's really smart of you" and then Travis would say "Wait what did I say?" or something along those lines.
Vax getting the kill shot on Thordak was the most emotional moment of the show for me, just because of everything that went into the story. In the campaign, they literally did attack Raishan pretty much as soon as Thordak was dead.
Absolutely unparalleled peak. The writing, the animation, the acting, all of it. And this season has really put Production Reve (from S Korea, they did a lot of the big animation stuff like the dragons and whatnot) on my personal radar, where they weren’t before. Crazy high quality in all facets in this peak show
Dude scanlan is built like a particular ripped 7 year old and he got ragged dolled on the side of a mountain. Grog was fine, he’s built for that shit, but scanlan, by race and class, very much is not
I'm kindof sad that they didn't adapt Grog screaming "fix him". Laura is straight up doing everything she can not to burst into tears gets me every time.

2:40 when the party were having decision paralysis, the spirit of Travis Willingham would take over Grog, and Travis is a sharp man, unlike Grog. There's a reason they made him CEO of Critical Role.
What's funny is that this could also reference the campaign where there was this big tiger villain doing a "another day" and vax's player just went "i throw my knives at disadvantage" and he hits him out of the sky and the guy falls to his death. Taking out a chapter of the campaign before it could even start 😂
One of the greatest final boss fights I have ever seen in my life. The action choreography, the animation quality, the true sense that anyone could die in this episode, and the incredibly cathartic ending of Pike using a Dragon Ball Z looking attack followed by Vax avenging his mother and all of the people they lost leading up to this moment by dealing the killing blow to Thordak. I just wish Lance Reddick could’ve lived to see how truly epic this whole episode and his characters death would’ve looked like in the end. RIP Lance, we’ll never forget you.
