When you pull out produce when its kinda frost time
Plant oats or something that your animals can eat some and you can leave the rest in the soil
Its tight timing but you can experiment with a grain you feed your animals that can handle light frosts
I left in some oat grass over the winter and pulled some for grass feed

I have only tilled my main garden once about 4 years ago....just so I could make it a bit bigger. I do not till but I add bone meal, kelp and straw every spring. Last fall we had to move the composter, so we dumped all its contents on the main garden and covered it with tarps!

Of course, in the gardening circle, we think about growing our own food.
But, WRT inflation, become more self reliant in whatever you can.
If you don't want to garden, can you cook?
If you don't want to cook, can you build things?
If you can build, can you sew?
If you can't sew, can you repair?
Local economy of sole proprietors can go a long way to fighting inflation.

I am hoping I can actually get a garden in and protected from all my critters this year. I need to see if I can find someone who will deliver some garden soil, if it is even available in bulk in my area. Once I get it started I should be able to replenish it with my goat compost.

New subscriber here. I SO APPRECIATE your hands-on DIY grittiness, keeping it real for us homesteaders and wanna-be homesteaders, giving people ideas to work on a budget. You are such an inspiration to me and I want to thank you. This time of year in Maine is horrible weather, and the only thing that keeps me going is looking at seed packets, imagining my hands in warm soil which is currently covered in layers of snow and ice....and by planting those seeds inside in potting soil, turning my sunny living room into a greenhouse. You are one of the best homesteading channels.
Also - question: I tried planting seeds on a wet paper towel this year in a homemade "terrarium" (old plastic food containers) then transferring to soil. It seems not ideal because I am disrupting the tiny seedlings to plant them. Thoughts? Thinking about going back to planting seeds directly into soil.

    • @saraalexander9589

Also, meant to mention - and I saw this on Edible Acres channel - I am going to try using an old broken window blind this year, cutting the white strips to make plant labels with a sharpie. It may be a sturdy, cheap way to identify my plant varieties. My problem is my labels in the past have not been quality and large and end up getting lost in the greenery....

I have a chicken coop that I will be cleaning out that has over 2 feet of compost on the ground that is leftover straw and yard waste and chicken poop. It is about 15ft my 30ft that I will be cleaning out for the first time in close to 20 years.
