  • Lake Pend Oreille (pronounced: pond-ə-ray) in the northern Idaho Panhandle is the largest lake in Idaho and the 38th largest lake by area in the United States, with a surface area of 148 square miles and 1,150 feet deep in some regions, making it the fifth deepest in the United States. It is fed by the Clark Fork River and the Pack River, and drains via the Pend Oreille River. It is surrounded by national forests and a few small towns, with the largest population on the lake at Sandpoint. The majority of the shoreline is non-populated. All but the southern tip of the lake is in Bonner County. The southern tip is in Kootenai County and is home to Farragut State Park, formerly the Farragut Naval Training Station during World War II of which a small part is still active and conducts US Navy acoustic underwater submarine research. Submarine Races are Real.

I was raised In Bayview back in the 60's my grandpa had a resort there & I loved it. Every summer the families would come in & take out the house boats. Winters were lonely on the lake though* I now live in California & don't blame you for not wanting the people from here moving there*

I wish I had a penpal in this area so I can visit there and stay there at least temporarily. I have a penpal in North Dakota, so I am half way there. I am in the ugly city of Chicago.

A lot of ridiculous comments on here. North Idaho is a beautiful and very friendly place. Don't let the fools mislead you.

And what were those ridiculous comments? That it's pretty, that you can hike, fish, and swim? That there are submarine maneuvers?

I often see fishing, but no water skiing or swimming. It must be too cold. Isn't it fed by snow melt?

It is a beautiful area. Unfortunately it's getting infected by a horrible disease. This disease is moving in from the southern states. This disease is easy to find in the area. Go to any populated area and look for women who have grossly deformed faces, usually from some sort of cosmetic surgery like Botox(Bondo) plastered onto their face. They are always whining about how much they miss their homeland. I steer clear of them because they are rude. They would dearly love to turn North Idaho into their former homeland also. I believe the name of the disease is Californicus Assholius. Have a nice day.

Not to put too fine a point on it, sir, but I believe the term you're trying to express is "Culus Californicus." which I believe is the scientific name. People in Idaho, however, refer to it by it's more common appellations such as, Californaroids, the LA drip, Sou Cal Butt Worms, and "Not another damn one." Yet it's about time that the rest of the nation becomes aware of this insidious disease that destroys families and the environment. Thank you for your efforts, lest this pestilence wipes out the whole of Northern Idaho.

We have land there. The people are wonderful and the outdoors is fantastic, even in the chilly months. It's getting expensive real fast though as people are discovering telecommuting.
