He became toxic (scarred people do become toxic after going through a lot). only to protect himself, tried to alleviate the pain through SUBSTANCE ABUSE but he couldn't, as the hostess said, he is paying for the sins others have done, just like Jesus. All he wanted to do was to achieve his dreams with the support of his family members. He wanted to live, not just survive.
