Metropolis 98B was being designed at the same time as Bombardier was developing the R142 metro trains for the New York subway. Both trains started construction in the middle of 1998 and ceased to be produced in 2004, but the traction motor model that was being used for both trains continued to be produced until 2012. After both trains ceased production, the R160 began to be constructed and approximately ⅔ of those trains had those motors installed. Production of the R160 ended in 2014, two years after the traction motors themselves stopped production.
