    Well, this a perfect video for me. I'm extremely literal with my colors. For me, the use of different colors is enticing, but also like standing on top of a cliff getting ready to bungee jump. (Which I've never done, will never do. Did I mention I'm afraid of heights?)
    Still, I look at many paintings where color is used more creatively and love the look.
    I enjoy landscapes, but I'm captivated by people so want to do portraits, too... though not in the pose for school pictures or posh portraits.
    I look at how Norman Rockwell did the portraits for the Stagecoach series when the film came out and the way he used color for Alex Cord and Van Heflin really added a rugged dimension. If I start listing others I'll use up the internet bandwidth.
    So thanks, this is a great starting point and maybe a little less terrifying than before. Maybe 😏

      Haha I totally know where you're coming from! For me it was a matter of "i have no idea what im doing i'll just throw ALL the colors at the paper!" and it took a long time to understand what was happening, or go further than accidental good results.

    Hi Sarah,can't wait to do the coastal scene.
    Please would you do a tutorial for the canyon in the pic.❤

      That will be in my next video, but it won't really be a full tutorial, because I'm working on a Skillshare class about canyons/deserts.

    Over & above, changing realistic lightening...
    Is there a 🎨 of colors, you could call, "fantasy" colors?
    Those not often found in reality.
    But that always, create a "feel" of dream & fantasy?
    HI, from Western Colorado
    Thank you!

      Anything extremely vibrant, like phthalo blue and green, or quinacridones tend to create really wild mixes and make it easier to lean towards fantasy.

    Wow this video is so thoughtful and awesome, thank you! I am saving this to watch again. I really like the 2 color gouache exercise, I'm definitely going to try that! I also really loved the flip through of your sketch books where you had value studies next to color studies. All of this is so fantastic, thank you for sharing all of your techniques!

    This is so helpful, it kind of explains how to methodically do what I’ve been doing at random in my paintings! I always called mine fauvist landscapes, and just kind of use intuition to pick colors, so it’s good to have new exercises to try (I never thought of using black and white reference photos and a color editor, that’s genius) love your style ❤️

    • @SarahBurnsStudio

      That's exactly why I wanted to share this video! I was the same, as I was stumbling along through colors I never really thought about why I used crazy choices, I just did it intuitively. Which is fine I guess? But I really want to be in control, to CHOOSE those crazy colors and know how to use them to achieve my goals, ya know?

    This was the perfect video I needed to learn to use color. Question, I can't afford photoshop at the moment, is there a free app that will change the colors in a photo? This will by far be the best method I can use to get me out of the "paint what I see" mode and teach me to be creative with color. I struggle with the play of light and dark,, shadows and such...Thanks so much for sharing your journey of art with us!!!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад

      I think just the standard photo app on smart phones do that nowadays. It allows you to add a filter like black and white to any photo.

    So much wisdom in such a beautiful video. Thank you!
    Not sure if this is a color question, or just a gouache question, but how do you keep your colors so vibrant as you add layers? How do you decide when to layer colors or not?
    Also, how did you choose your gouache palette and do you have any plans to make an environmentally friendly pallete like you did with your watercolors?

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад

      Thank you! To help the colors remain vibrant use thick paint so you don't get any colors below peeking through and causing them to look more dull. Or at least don't layer complimentary colors if they are diluted. So if you like to use diluted paint, plan ahead. The palette I use is mostly nature-friendly except the cobalt turquoise light, but it's really hard to replace that color. My colors play really nicely together! I just applied the same knowledge of pigment research to my gouache (but especially focused on lightfast ratings). I included all that research in the big Patreon post (if you message me through there I can send it).

      @@SarahBurnsStudio ✨🤗✨ Thank you Sarah!! 💖 I love the way you blue tape your painting journal- and even the fact that you paint in a book! My ex cut up my mom gifted easel into parts for a bird box years ago, (and even my beautiful leather purse strap!) I guess he figured I wasn’t using it anyway! 🤯 I have bought a small one since but it’s yet unused... Your new ideas and bringing new thoughts and brighter visions!! Thnx!!

    So much information in this video! Thank you 💜
    A question I have about color that I've been trying on my own is how to darken colors in gouache without adding black. It seems like black desaturates the color (like white) and it's so easy to put too much black in the mix! Are there other colors we can substitute for black? Thanks!

    • @SarahBurnsStudio
      @SarahBurnsStudio  3 года назад +1

      Definitely a good question! My favorite way to make black is mixing my darkest blues and reds with a little burnt umber. It makes a beautiful dark color. Or I use perylene black with blue and red.

    Hey I picked my colors from the based off cool and warm primaries with white and black. How do you feel about getting mutipul like 2 or 3 of different cool tones per a primary???
