Woong Kim, born in 1944, relocated to New York after 1970, where he graduated from the School of Visual Arts (SVA) and went on to study at the Yale University School of Art. He became the first Korean to hold a professorship at SVA from 1979 to 1987, after which he left academia to pursue a full-time career as a recognized artist in the New York art scene. Now at age 80, he is likely more accustomed to life in New York than in Korea. His paintings transcend simple nostalgic reminiscence, transforming vague memories of his homeland into unknown abstract landscapes. This process involves a technique of extracting and layering memories with repetitive brushstrokes to build up layers of color, creating his unique style of modern painting. The intimate emotions rooted in his childhood experiences form the foundation of his art, with sentiments connected to his origins shaped by his early years in his native country.
