You may rest assured that yours is direct drive, even though there might be some gears playing around. Direct-Drive and 3 heads is just great as you proved. Like aleady told from others: These 2 belts are for tape counter and hall sensor (control tape working / tape travel and autostop) and do not have usual any effect with WoF (wow & flutter). In exceptional cases only if one uses the wrong (too narrow) belts which then stretch too tight. The tape drive is easy to take out: 4 screws (2 top/2 bottom). For better WoF you should change the idler (wheel) gummi against a new one, or in minimum clean it with isopropanol alcohol (using tips), also some sand paper (1000 or more) could help if surface of idler gummi has not enough grip (gummi did harden some what). Likewise, the two discs (pinch rollers) which drives the idler wheel respectively (for fast forward, rewind and play) also clean with alcohol and tips. Additional the direct drive motor and capstan (with capstan axis) should taken out, cleaned and new lubricated (using sintered bearings oil or motor oil if not available, and some titan or graphite grease). Take care to not loose the transparent oil disc on the capstan axis (on pinch roller side, prevents that pinch roller gets oily from oil that comes out over time from the slide bearing). After this, when resampled the speed should adjusted (see manual, using DVM with frequency count function or frequency counter and speed test cassette 3kHz). Also cleaning capstan axis on the pinch roller and the pinch roller intensivly (alcohol or special rubber wheel cleaner + tips). Also when replacing belt always clean the guides / rolls also where theses belt "drives". This is best done by a piece of (white) thicker cotton wool which is soaked with isopropanol and which is repeatedly pulled through the guide rollers. Only after this then install new belts. This is even more needed for (capstan) "belt driven" tapes (absolute majority of tape decks). The "non-soft eject problem" usually comes from a worn o-ring in the damping element for the cassette compartment. This is difficult to repair and often hopeless and frustrating piece of repair. You can make a new o-ring (you often have to cut a new one some thinner with a razor blade) or brush the element with slightly viscous grease or silicon with extremely high viscosity. Often, a set screw on the back of the damping element which you can adjust something but often helps little. The TA-2060 is a very nice and good sounding vintage tape deck which won many comparative tests in the mid-1980s. I have one myself and and completely restored it.

@@ebarbie5016 In Iran and most Arab countries western music is prohibited, so no hifi components, especially not for women.:) So she have to be an American or British girl with maybe persian or arab roots. But this doesn`t matter.
Actually, western music is not prohibited in those countries lol not sure where you heard this but there are a lot of Arabs who listen to it. If Amiga and commodore computers were so popular in places like Iran, Iraq, Syria and Egypt etc then it's not uncommon to see tech like this. I know someone from Lebanon who is into vintage audio electronics in a big way and listens to western music as well as Arabic. I'm Arab myself btw living in the UK, I speak Arabic and Spanish... But yeah, I agree, it should not make a difference nor matter to anyone what I am or where i'm from. Also Peter I think your information about Arab countries and Iran is severely outdated, by a century or so lol
One summer I managed to pick up three late eighties (black plastic/loads of VFD displays and LEDs) Dolby HX-Pro twin tape decks and only one works properly so I plan to restore the other two (Kenwood, Dennon and another higher end brand) to load games into my ZX81 lol
Very nice looking Onkyo deck. Would have been a decent one back in the day. I’d like to get my Yamaha deck out one day and play around with it, I just don’t have the room atm. Though I have decent quality tapes, they haven’t been stored properly, and so I’d say they’d be no good now. Unfortunately these days, buying new/old tapes are expensive, because they are no longer being made by the main manufacturers, TDK, Sony, Maxell, BASF ect. Would love to get my hands on some brand new TDK SA-X tapes from the mid to late 80’s, they were the best sounding tapes to me! 🙂
Capstan motor is direct drive. Spool motor is in the center of mechanism and a idler wheel switch between the two spool axels and the spool motor pulley. The idler tire should be replaced but if the fast forward and backwards work fine idler rubber is probably still ok. The belts you replaced should not cause any wow or flutter I think. Capstan motor and pinchroller should be the ones causing the problem.
It looks like one belt is for the tape counter, maybe the other is for back-tension. My Technics RS-BX606 is getting a bit hungry for tapes, and it has expensive taste, Type II's and IV's. I may have to dig into it to check the back-tension.
Hi, the small pulley with the sensor is often the autostop, ie when it stops, the mechanism disengages. May also work the counter if it is a digital type. Great video, by the way, nice presentation.
The low tones are for Dolby calibration / recording sensitivity . I don't know any deck that uses lower tones to adjust the bias , if the owners manual doesn't comment on this it's probably what Accu Bias is all about
Really nice player and demo of a belt change. Might try and get one of these cassette decks. Mine is an old AiwaAD-F460, nice, but not as nice as that! Subscribed!
Beautiful deck. I still keep my Nikko Deck ND-590, also a really good one. This reminds me recording from Amiga's Aegis Sonic and ultimate soundtracker to tape.
eita eita, dona limao!!!! Que video maravilhoso. Porque as outras mulheres nao se interessam por eletronica? A senhora é uma raridade, dona limao! Desejo sucesso!
Maddi, Thanks for showing how to set the bias. I've never knew how to set it manually. Is HX a way of adding headroom to your recording? If that's true, shouldn't it be left on whenever you record?
yes, HX (and HX Pro) is supposed to give you more headroom by keeping a balance between the bias level and the high frequencies present in the audio itself (wich on their own act as a bias of sorts) in short: HX is adjusting bias dynamically depending on the audio signal actually, this is the first deck I see that has a switch for HX. all the "HX Pro" decks i've seen do not have a switch for it so I assume it's enabled all the time.
THOMMGB Yeah, I have no idea why one would want to record without HX. Since it isn’t an encoding (like Dolby NR or dbx), it doesn’t need a decoder and is playable on all players, so there’s no reason to not use it.
I have so many decks with belts that need to be replaced.....but it is such a pain in a lot of them. Also I am jealous of your metal cassettes =P I have yet to record on metal yet though I have many decks that can handle them.
Well done on fixing your cassette deck! :o) Yes, sometimes service manuals can be useless! :o( In general: I wonder, would it sometimes be a good idea to photograph the fixing process in stages if there is a lot of disassembly going on? This is something I do when matters get complicated. I did notice that the deck is a single capstan machine - nothing wrong with that, some high-end machines employ a dual capstan system with one 'trailing' capstan (on the left) running at slightly a slower speed. This helps the tape transport system maintain a smoother and more reliable tape transport - well, that's the theory anyway! :D Thumbs up - a great video, I really enjoyed it. Many thanks Ms M.Lemon.
I recommend photographing too when disassembling anythign complex, thought since i'm personally already videoing it, there's no need :o) Yes this is a single capstan machine, the dual capstan is for the auto reverse feature.
@@MsMadLemon A dual capstan system is used for an auto-reverse deck like my old AKAI GXC-75D, but my Revox B215, Nakamichi DR10, Sony TC-KA7ES, and Teac V8030S are all dual capstan and are only one-direction machines. If they are properly aligned, we can play cassette tapes with the pressure pad taken *out*. Lovely to see someone enjoying their retro HiFi! Regards and thanks for the feedback! :o)
I'd be very surprised if any of those manual sites actually had the legal rights to sell digital copies. They're still copyright the manufacturer. The rights holders simply aren't inclined (or extant) to pursue the infringement.
"Abandonware", as it's often (inaccurately) called. Generally the manufacturers distribute service manuals to the trade only; always has been the case.
Hi I'mhaveing a problem with an a-22 Onkyo, the cassette gears seem stuck, The motor wont turn, i hear a clicking noise. i checked the belts to the motor they seem okay.. i do get e tick tick noise, I'm stumped ?? any ideas would be greatly appreicated,, as i've never owned one of these before.. but i have the repaire manual with the schematic..
Hi there beutygal!! Me got a ADF-770, so called "nakakiller" or poormans naka. Of course, its an AIWA. From 83 to 86-era. It got adms-system and DATA. Do you have any feels about those modells?? I have not recapped mine yet. Caps seems fine,no any leaking. Is it good to recap my aiwa?
What's the belt-width for this deck? A "full set" of 2 belts especially for the TA-2060 costs 14€ and I do not want to pay that much for 2 belts only which I may buy in a bulk vor way less. Also: Are the pinch rollers on all cassett decks the same?
Nice :) The audio quality from the cassette is awesome. Have you tried recording games on cassettes? even with modern solutions, I love the games on cassettes :) I wouldn't use cassettes all the time, but every now and then.
I always wondered how legal those service manual resellers were. It pisses me off when I finally find a manual online but it is stuck behind a paywall. They definitely aren't the original company and thus at the very least are committing copyright violations for selling material that was published by another company with their registered trademarks and logos all over. Moreover many manuals specifically say something like for internal use only or not to be distributed.
i know right? This kind of crap should be outlawed. I remember when we had sites like Diplodocs where you could download manuals from nearly everything for free. And now it's all gone and the only sites left are VERY questionable dubious paywalled scalpers you should NOT pay.
Nice cassette deck! I wonder if the direct drive thing is referring to the capstan, presumably that is directly driven by the motor and that's what actually feeds the tape in conjunction with the pinch roller?
Of course there is as good as no difference between monitor a. source if it's recorded a. even prepaired properly with a good peak level & NOT normal tapes. Don't have 2 tell ya 4 sure. (Is that a Maxell UD 1 in there)😉? 2geth. with a Sony HF-S, BTW. Also works from tape2tape. Even with 3 heads, bias, Dolby HX aso it's more easy. The better it's adjusted the smaller is the diff. betw. the recs, (just 4 the kids)....Love those recording times on tape(s)decks with levelling the peak down at ev'ry end o' a tune by rec. from tuner. And then level it pretty quickly up again 2 get a more smooth transition 2 the nxt 1 than without it. I always did it like that. The very special thing was when they played ext. versions. And they've played it from the beginning til' the very end ! Still got those. (My best & latest 2 decks are Harman/Kardon TD 420). 'Twas so much fun a. STILL is....Where's the fun at downloading ???????? Bloody shit. The youth nowadays doesn't know what 2 do with THAT kinda "thang". They wouldn' t even understand a. handle those equipments. Far too many knobs a. signals. 4 that stuff they're also much 2 lazy 4. Loadin' down a mil. songs in a min. is easier....Love also the peak flashin' in the dark. MUCH bedda as a fckn' phone or stick in ur pockets. In our youth music wasn't just audio, 'twas ("hard") work too, a. also VISION...........of course. I JUST LOVE IT. Still got 5 sealed TDK SA's from those times. (the golden/silver labels) if u could remember them. So ur smooth eject is just gone..? But the rest is well done! Love the truck drivethru'. Tshoo tshoo. Greets from Gmy.
I bought a Sony tc-k555esL imported from Japan but stopped playing the belt is good I think it’s probably the direct drive system maybe it need something what do you think it can be Thanks by the great recordings 👍
i guess we're crazy indeed. us still recording on tape lol. it should indeed be direct driven if it says so, direct drive motors in cassette decks have some belts missing but not all, most dual capstan direct drive decks have a belt driven off the direct drive motor and this way driving the second capstan. The belt that drives the tape counter analogue or even digital, (the long one in your case) and even many decks use an idler tire to operate FF and REW. i managed to get an TEAC W860R from a thrift-store a few months ago for 7 and a halve euro. pitty thats not a direct drive. mr. Onkyo is indeed a really nice deck.
@@alerey4363 I know what you mean about digital, but I'm someone who likes to have the best of both worlds really and it is possible.... Even between vinyl record and tape, again different experiences.
Hi Johns82..Thanks for the thought... I tried being a part of Tapeheads but it just wasnt working out, shame as I was wanting it to... I was directed to a "Why arent there any women here" thread by someone which was not so friendly, actually it was quite nasty towards women... not to mention Sam's passive aggression and toxicity, he cant stand me so he will make sure i'm not there. And I respect myself too much to bear his egotistical assholery. That aside i know there were a couple of you there that were welcoming towards me, yourself, Rob, and a couple of others,... but overall the forum itself, I did not feel so welcome.
@@MsMadLemon I see your point. But it is not only with women there, some people there, and other forums (many of which I don't visit any more), are [consciously or unconsciously] rude and arrogant, I think that it is how they are in general in life ... they should be in Dr Phil's program to explain that. The good side of the forum is that I got so many good tips and advices on restoring vintage sound equipment and other electronics projects, and that saved me a lot of time, money and aggravations. That was worth my patience with some nasty and arrogant people there. Another problem that perhaps required more patience with nasty people is when you ask for an advice to resolve a problem and nobody knows the answer, then you find out the solution and share with them, and some people get jealous of you and just shoot down your ideas and start to find mundane or non-existent defects. However, overall it is worth it, most people are good and helpful there. BTW, I went to EE school and only ~15% were women in my class and they were always among the best, and some of my best teachers in EE school were women too (that included differential & integral calculus, analytic geometry, electromagnetism, fluid mechanics, microelectronics, etc.). A lot of people, including me, appreciate the talent and value of women in any field, including computing/IT, telecom & electronics. I found ridiculous in another YT channel someone (with reputation and knowledge) giving advice for EE interviews, saying "you should wear a tie.." -- automatically assuming the candidate is a man, simply stupid. (BTW, I already told you that I got a lot of ideas and motivation from you to do many of my projects and I appreciate that.)
@@kylesmithiii6150 Yes I agree that the issue is not just with women, I was watching the threads there even though i wasnt actively posting. But I was referring to that one post about women in particular, it was appalling, so much hostility... I mean its enough to put one off spending time there, naturally. I have noticed that some others there do have a superiority complex and one person in particular is up his own a$$ so many times over that he's turning into a spring. I tried twice being there and it wasnt a pleasant enough experience for me to stay.. and I remember talking to someone there in private message about all this, and he was just as fed up and tempted to leave also, so I know its not just with women as you say. I do know there are many who accept women into the field of Electronics and computing, after all i've seen so much support for me and my channel which i'm very thankful for. It's still undeniably more difficult for women in tech and that is unfortunate but, at least there is progress, with people like yourself and others who have commented thinking its absolutely brilliant that a woman is doing all this, it sort of makes my day :o)
@@MsMadLemon Yes I agree, I myself once took a 6 month hiatus from that place for the same reasons, I just got sick & tired, and there was also censorship from some moderators, which became more ridiculous and I had to stay away for a while but there were some good people there to interact via PM. I also find hilarious some comments here, probably from young men commenting about women as if they were in the "Mad Men" series about the 1960's or chatting with close friends in FB. They will probably have a short or tough professional career interfacing with women, especially with bosses and customers.
The capstan (which is solely responsible for the speed of the tape) is what’s directly driven. The spool motor can be belt driven, since it has no impact on sound quality. (The other belt goes to the counter.) I suspect the wow and flutter is from the pinch roller, as others have commented.

Hello! Your actions and knowledge say a lot! You have a good qualification of a specialist! But the most important thing is that you like it all.
You are the master
The old is gold. Nice deck cassette.
One summer I managed to pick up three late eighties (black plastic/loads of VFD displays and LEDs) Dolby HX-Pro twin tape decks and only one works properly so I plan to restore the other two (Kenwood, Dennon and another higher end brand) to load games into my ZX81 lol
Thanks so much - I’m keeping my 2050 forever now - very inspiring- also the video is very cute and is damn near accidental same 😜
"That was one of Onkyo best tape machine going at time and still is! ...beautiful made!😇💜

Super video!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😀😂😁😅😄🌺🥀🌹😺😾😿🙀🐱😽😼😹😻
Capstan motor is direct drive. Spool motor is in the center of mechanism and a idler wheel switch between the two spool axels and the spool motor pulley. The idler tire should be replaced but if the fast forward and backwards work fine idler rubber is probably still ok. The belts you replaced should not cause any wow or flutter I think. Capstan motor and pinchroller should be the ones causing the problem.
My teac deck just decided to stop working on me recently :( Going to have to work out what is wrong with it
Does anyone know the particular sizes of belts used here? Just picked one up and want to refurbish it.
It looks like one belt is for the tape counter, maybe the other is for back-tension. My Technics RS-BX606 is getting a bit hungry for tapes, and it has expensive taste, Type II's and IV's. I may have to dig into it to check the back-tension.
Amiga music and Mate! great! nice video.
Every time i see a new video of Maddi appearing i get a little smile at my face. Thanks for all the videos. Keep up the good work.
Great performance from this Onkyo 3 head machine. I should really use my high end Technics 3 head deck more often!
Hi, the small pulley with the sensor is often the autostop, ie when it stops, the mechanism disengages. May also work the counter if it is a digital type. Great video, by the way, nice presentation.
*It is freaking surprising* to see you in this profession!😁😁😁
What a beautiful tape deck
The low tones are for Dolby calibration / recording sensitivity . I don't know any deck that uses lower tones to adjust the bias , if the owners manual doesn't comment on this it's probably what Accu Bias is all about
Very good my friend.

You need to clean the capstan shaft and pinch roller. They determine the wow and flutter. Ideally replace the pinch roller as they get hard with age.

I would suggest replacing the drive wheel and clean its contact surfaces as well.
6:43 looks like that belt is up against the metalwork but it was like that on the old belt too. looks like that brown might belt dust rubbing off.
The only other explanation I can think of is that one of it's past owners was a heavy cigarette smoker, it reminded me of yellowed smoke stains.

Maddi,
Thanks for showing how to set the bias. I've never knew how to set it manually.
Is HX a way of adding headroom to your recording? If that's true, shouldn't it be left on whenever you record?
My pleasure :o)
And yes Indeed HX should be left on when you record, but there's no need to have it turned on, on playback, unlike Dolby B, C, S.
yes, HX (and HX Pro) is supposed to give you more headroom by keeping a balance between the bias level and the high frequencies present in the audio itself (wich on their own act as a bias of sorts)
in short: HX is adjusting bias dynamically depending on the audio signal
actually, this is the first deck I see that has a switch for HX.
all the "HX Pro" decks i've seen do not have a switch for it so I assume it's enabled all the time.
@@MsMadLemon Thank you for the quick reply and helping me to add to my knowledge. That's what I kinda thought, but I wasn't positive. Now, I am. :-)
Yes, sometimes service manuals can be useless! :o(
In general: I wonder, would it sometimes be a good idea to photograph the fixing process in stages if there is a lot of disassembly going on? This is something I do when matters get complicated.
I did notice that the deck is a single capstan machine - nothing wrong with that, some high-end machines employ a dual capstan system with one 'trailing' capstan (on the left) running at slightly a slower speed. This helps the tape transport system maintain a smoother and more reliable tape transport - well, that's the theory anyway! :D
Thumbs up - a great video, I really enjoyed it. Many thanks Ms M.Lemon.
I recommend photographing too when disassembling anythign complex, thought since i'm personally already videoing it, there's no need :o)
Yes this is a single capstan machine, the dual capstan is for the auto reverse feature.
I got an old reel to reel deck with an analog counter. What do I need to make a digital counter for it ?
That little transporter truck :D cute.
Hi has anyone had problems with the Onkyo ta-2056 ?Thanks..
The FLYWHEEL is direct drive...they make it sound like the capstan is direct drive right????
Yet another direct drive but with some belt somewhere. Is there a direct drive deck without any belt and without rubber idler?
It is important to oil the moving parts before re assembliing
Great vid keep up the good work
AH! I love Amiga music so much! T^T
I bought a Sony tc-k555esL imported from Japan but stopped playing the belt is good I think it’s probably the direct drive system maybe it need something what do you think it can be
Thanks by the great recordings 👍
Super !
Fun vid!
The idler wheel is the one that needs replacing...or a good clean with isopropyl.
Have you tried the universal cassette Bluetooth is for all cassette player it turn your cassette player like into a bluetooth speaker works great
Se me hace raro y genial que a una chica le guste esto.
Thank you 🎵
i guess we're crazy indeed. us still recording on tape lol.
it should indeed be direct driven if it says so, direct drive motors in cassette decks have some belts missing but not all, most dual capstan direct drive decks have a belt driven off the direct drive motor and this way driving the second capstan. The belt that drives the tape counter analogue or even digital, (the long one in your case) and even many decks use an idler tire to operate FF and REW.
i managed to get an TEAC W860R from a thrift-store a few months ago for 7 and a halve euro. pitty thats not a direct drive. mr. Onkyo is indeed a really nice deck.

johns82 here from Tapeheads, sort of miss you over there!
3 head direct drive with 2 belts :-) Nice repair, very serviceable deck.
The capstan (which is solely responsible for the speed of the tape) is what’s directly driven. The spool motor can be belt driven, since it has no impact on sound quality. (The other belt goes to the counter.) I suspect the wow and flutter is from the pinch roller, as others have commented.
