To add a little context about why the both of them were so incredibly upset but why specifically the older woman looked as if her entire life had just been snatched away. It actually sort of was snatched away, because by sending her out of the palace in disgrace what Eunuch Wu has done is to doom her to a life of penniless destitution outside the palace walls and her most likely fate will be that she’ll starve to death on the streets as a beggar. Unfortunately the harsh reality is that a woman of her age was considered valueless in the wider world at the time. She’s too old to make a good match for marriage, and That means that without her savings she has no one to support her and she has no means by which to successfully support herself without trading on her reputation as a former palace imperial servant. If she tried claiming connections to the palace now that she’s been disgraced it would be disastrous both for her and for whatever household was misfortunate enough to employ her. She’s doomed. That’s why she was begging. In her position I would do the exact same thing. This moment also illustrates the fact that our heroine has a cruel streak because she knows what she’s doing and she’s making an example in front of the other palace maids so that this sort of thing doesn’t happen again. Clever clever girl, no wonder she goes so far.
