And they were played by Randy Castillo (RIP) who was also another legend. Tommy Lee has a unique way of hitting the drums just like John Bonham and Ginger Baker
Bob Rock is ultimately responsible for that sound that everyone hears on DF. Big, huge, dimensional- like you’re actually listening to them play live. Metallica’s Black Album as well. Give credit where it’s due. Bob Rock is THE Man.🤘🏻

Man we saw them on that farewell tour and honestly Alice Cooper blew them out of the arena. Vince was so bad, pathetic really, with the mic constantly stuck out to the crowd, Tommy was just a circus act with the roller coaster, and Nikki, well, in an arena, the bass is just booming and rolling around and nothing is even discernable....but Mick. Mick freaking Mars just ripped and roared all night. Every single riff, all the classics...Shout, Live Wire, Feelgood, Kickstart, Looks, he was as good as he ever was. The solo on Home Sweet..OMG. That guy belongs in the hall of fame. Guys can only dream of writing riffs like that and sounding like he does live and on record.

The sound I grew up on, brings back so many memories. Thankfully it fell into Pete’s hands. I can’t think of anyone else to break this thing down and explain, knob by knob, why that sound was so special to me. Man, Pete. Us old punk dudes live on this tone, and your reference to Steve Jones is not lost on me. High gain, sure, but spongey and crispy is totally key. I'm not necessarily a Motley Crue fan, but when I heard Dr. Feelgood I connected with that tone. You've now made the connection!

Actually, Steve Jones didn't use a Marshall on all of those early Sex Pistols tracks. He used a totally cranked Silverface Fender Twin that he stole from Bob Marley and the Wailers when they did the Old Grey Whistle test TV show in England. True story.
Thanks for the great video Pete. Always wondered why the US glam rock bands had a heavier tone despite using the same old Marshalls. Would be great to see one about Tom Keifers amps. Apparently he used SLP's as well.

That’s a sweet guitar tone! Mick Mars wrote some legendary riffs. They’re very catchy which I feel is just as important as being a very technical player.
Saw the Crue live in 1982 opening for the great Y&T on Halloween and Micks tone was the best most percussive live guitar sound I ever heard, to this day I can still "feel" his dynamic picking muting riding thru the verse of Pubic Enemy #1 playing that black Les Paul. Tommy's drumming was spectacular that night too, spinning, twirling the sticks like no one else had ever done before at that level, Vincent was on it as was Nikki, they were great in every way that night. Bought their album the next day. BTW, Y&T still plays, Dave is a legend, if you get a chance go see them, awesome live band!!!
For me, this is prime time stuff! That amp is like the grail of José amps :D (and Mick Mars' Tone was and is big, warm and fat and organic). Pete, your vids are really a revelation. That's insane that this was used on Dr. Feelgood! Why would Mick or anyone let this go? It's a serious piece of rock history. I still remember getting Dr- Feelgood back in 1990, one of my favorite albums. Mick Mars is such an underrated guitarists, everything he touches turns to gold.

They have it cloned, so sell it for big money to serious collectors. They still have an amp that has the same tone. I'm sure Mick has some cloned Marshalls of this amp as well.

I try to replicate this amp sound through my gear for years! When I knew it was for sale I went crazy, unfortunately I couldn't afford it and it had already been sold. My dream amp for sure!
Its amazing how good those Jose mods are. I have a Hughes & Kettner Mark 3 that I run in stereo and it does sound fantastic but to get that Marshall mod sound I had buy a JVM 410. Nothing quite gets a Marshall Jose mod sound, they are just way to hard to find the right one.
That's a great amp, sounds killer! I wish we could see more details on that mode from the inside, maybe a video with Dave Friedman when he explains some details.

Awesome vid.... Here's what I gather from it. Fortus joined Guns in 2002...???? He bought it just after he joined. Crue's last album was New Tattoo around 2000. Last we heard of Motley until Carnival Of Sins reunion. Mick has talked about those dark days for him. The setting markings.... I would gather that Mars had the white markings because in a few shots you can see the arrows, black, yellow over top of the white. Yellow looks to be most recent markings. That would pre date the white ones to Mick right there @ 21:21 time frame.
That’s good detective work. All the marked settings are really pretty close except the white mark presence was higher, around 1 o’clock as opposed to the black markings around 10 o’clock

What brand guitar is that and what kind of pickups are in it? I'd kind of like to know that but I didn't see it listed in the description. Definitely an angry tone going on inside that amp!
Trace at voodoo had my 71 super tremolo for 2 and a half years and didn't even take out of the box i shipped it to him in. great video though, figured out how to mod it myself and been experimenting with Jose style mods on it. Wish I knew that stuff back before I sent the amp to Trace.
Dr.Feelgood has one of the best guitar sounds. That amp is just killer and they gave it to the right man to demo it!

that's true but later on live he started using the 800's. Listen to his tone on the Iggy Pop album Instinct.

Damn I want a Friedman 20W version of this. Dunno how, but Dave is a Wizard at making el84 sound like big bottles.
Marshall has a 20-watt Plexi, with EL-34's. Hot Mod has a plug-in add a pre tube mod, $200. Total would be $1,600. A lot less than a new 100-watt.

Just like Richard said..."it's got teeth"! It's raw mid growl. Great for both rhythm and lead and cuts thru in the mix.

Awesome vid.... Here's what I gather from it. Fortus joined Guns in 2002...???? He bought it just after he joined. Crue's last album was New Tattoo around 2000. Last we heard of Motley until Carnival Of Sins reunion. Mick has talked about those dark days for him. The setting markings.... I would gather that Mars had the white markings because in a few shots you can see the arrows, black, yellow over top of the white. Yellow looks to be most recent markings. That would pre date the white ones to Mick right there @ 21:21 time frame.
That’s good detective work. All the marked settings are really pretty close except the white mark presence was higher, around 1 o’clock as opposed to the black markings around 10 o’clock
@@PeteThorn It would be really cool to trace it back to whom it came from and when did Mick get it, what state was the amp in...modded or not. ??? Somebody out there has got to know. Mick may or may not remember himself. God bless that man.

The guitars sound amazing on that album. It took me years of listening to Dr.Feelgood then one day, for some reason, I paid attention to the guitar sound and ....BAM!

What brand guitar is that and what kind of pickups are in it? I'd kind of like to know that but I didn't see it listed in the description. Definitely an angry tone going on inside that amp!
Trace at voodoo had my 71 super tremolo for 2 and a half years and didn't even take out of the box i shipped it to him in. great video though, figured out how to mod it myself and been experimenting with Jose style mods on it. Wish I knew that stuff back before I sent the amp to Trace.
