Jacob Anderson I might sound like a nerd (which i am,) but dooku's lightsaber style is a form called makashi (a.k.a Form 2,) and it's a style that was made for one-on-one lightsaber fighting. It's like fencing. One of the traditional moves for it was to do the salute thing you mentioned before dueling an opponent
Defeating and humiliating Obi Wan and The Chosen One back to back and then stalemating Yoda whilst managing to escape and accomplish all your mission goals is the most impressive feat of all lightsaber duels in Star Wars. Dooku is so damn underrated.
@@account8158 Form II Makashi, Dooku's preferred style of Lightsaber Combat is not to be taken lightly; Makashi is lighting quick, and boasts a high defense of its own considering that it is designed to wear an opponent down. Dooku does just this to both Anakin and Obi-Wan in Episode 2. It should be noted that Form II was specifically designed for Saber to Saber combat, and fell out of practice after the Sith Empire toppled due to the lack of Saber Wielding Foes to oppose the Jedi. It should also be noted that, Dooku was said to be the BEST Swordsman of the Jedi Order before he left, it was said he bested Mace Windu during Sparring Matches and was the go-to instructor for Swordsmanship training. The fact that he held his own against Yoda in this scene should be evidence enough that he is a Master Duelist.
Teen Gohan you obviously need to brush up on your knowledge of Count Dooku if you think he was weak. One of the best lightsaber dualists in the star wars universe, and was quite powerful in the force to match
Hold my Aquavit, and get some Scandinavian cuisine cooking because these wont take long.* (Christopher Lee had a fondness for Aquavit and he said Scandinavian food was his favourite.)
I don't think the problem with the prequels was any of the actors. The prequels had terrible direction and writing, not acting. It had plenty of INCREDIBLY talented actors. Ewan McGregor, Liam Neeson, Ian McDiarmid, Christopher Lee, Natalie Portman, even Hayden Christensen are all talented actors. Some of them managed to salvage their roles somewhat. Ian McDiarmid hammed it up delightfully and gave us some of the cheesiest, most meme worthy moments ever put to film, Ewan McGregor stood out as STILL managing to play an excellent Obi-Wan, Liam Neeson was probably the single best part of The Phantom Menace, apart from the Maul fight, and Christopher Lee is just CHRISTOPHER GODDAMN LEE. But even the ones who couldn't, I wouldn't say their problem was bad acting. There was really nothing Hayden Christensen could have done to salvage some of the godawful lines he was forced to read. Famously, Harrison Ford once threatened to tie George Lucas up and force him to read his own lines. That should really highlight the real issue. Lucas is an incredible visionary, but he tends to fall short when it comes to writing and directing natural and believable human interactions. Much of the most memorable lines from the original trilogy were thanks to other people stepping in and convincing Lucas to change things. He didn't really have that enough for the prequels. They gave him too much free reign.
My honest opinion is that Episode 2 had best sword fights in Star Wars. Not too slow and not too long like the ones in Episode 3. The new trilogy has nothing compared to this.
I love Dooku's style and appearance all the way, his voice and aristocratic manners. He is like an old fencing master. Christopher Lee was really perfect for this role (r.i.p.)
It's pretty impressive that in his late 70s Lee played two iconic second-string villains in the two biggest blockbuster trilogies of the era: Lord of the Rings (Saruman) and Star Wars (Dooku).
I agree. Lee completely nailed the role. I love how he just straight up owns Obi-Wan in such a graceful manner. Sadly, George Lucas underused him and the writing was pretty bad at times.
It’s just the opening stance of his lightsaber form, not necessarily a show of respect (although Dooku would obviously have plenty of respect for Yoda).
@@vmast_vids supposedly there's no "uncivilized" light sabre battle no matter the outcome. Like when they came to arrest Palpatine, he could have just blasted them all with force lightning or force crushed them all but he chose to be "classy" about his resistance.
@@JoelTaylor734 I'm not sure about that. It could go either way. Anakin was able to out duel Dooku in revenge of the sith. Obviously his speed and fast lastsaber movements were lost when he lost his limbs and became Vader. Vader also had to adapt a new fighting style that allows him to protect his chest. However I do think that Vader is more powerful than Dooku is in the force. I can see the fight going either way, but I would be in favor of Vader
@@anthonyduran6387 Prime Vader could very much beat Prime Anakin, it’s just Vader wouldn’t be able to beat full potential Anakin. The fights in 4-6 weren’t fast and swish because of limits at the time, and apparently canonically those fights were faster and better looking than showed in the movies
@@ezkeI I don't think ep 4 Vader is intended to be prime Vader, though. Based on various statements by Lucas and canon, my take is that suitless Vader is as powerful as Sidious when he's got his head in the game. When he drops the ball and gets put in the suit, he's down to 80% of Sidious's power, I think that's the Vader we see in the OT, who is more on the level of Dooku and Maul than Sidious. In the new Disney canon, we see Vader doing a lot of powerful stuff- I take that to mean he's still capable of performing at suitless/Sidious level on special occasions, but I think that when he's fighting Obi-Wan and Luke he's fighting at a similar level to his duel with Dooku before he started using the dark side and wiped the floor with the guy. So ep 3 Anakin ~ ep 4 Vader, in my book. Losing to Obi-Wan put a block on his growth. I think he'd beat Dooku but not easily, unless he's really motivated, in which case it would go the same way it did in ep 3.
@@shivin6997 EP4 Vader may not be prime Vader, i assumed prime Vader was ~Fallen Order Vader from the finesse of his ability to destroy Cal and Cere with ease. But yeah, Vader definitely had his force potential capped after the suit. Mentioned in I think the ROTS novelisation (could be another comic), Vader’s loss of potential in the suit is almost all because of his mindset, believing himself to be weaker and hating not others to fuel his power but himself. Darth Maul has mentioned that he was afraid of Vader in Rebels, so he could definitely beat Maul. I’d say Dooku would be much harder to beat, and you are right he’d have to have the right mindset and be focused to beat him. Due to his weakness in his suit against force lighting, you are right in saying there is no way Vader could beat Sidious.
For anyone wondering why Count Dooku has such an elegant style of lightsaber combat, you can thank his actor, the LEGENDARY Christopher Lee, for that. Lee was a master fencer and still to this day holds the record for most on-screen sword fights of any actor in history. He was an expert swordsman for 70 years and would've absolutely HUMBLED every actor and stuntman in Star Wars had he been in his prime.
Luke after losing a single hand: *Screaming in excruciating agony* Anakin after losing half of his whole arm: "Agh." Dooku after losing *both* hands: *s i l e n c e*
It's not far fetched to think the shock and pain combined could've caused his voice to just get caught in his throat. Kind of like how when some people get super scared they don't always scream. Anakin however...yeah, there's no excuse for THAT, especially with how it's presented. Like Hayden literally holds his arm out instead of showing a remotely convincing moment of him being riposted.
I never realized how revolutionary this fight was in regards to cinematic lightsaber duels. In this one scene we got: - The first seen curved-hilt lightsaber - The revelation that force lightning can be blocked by a lightsaber. - The first seen display of dual-saber wielding. - Christopher Lee's masterful execution of Form II. - A redirection of force lightning bewteen Yoda and Dooku - The revelation that Yoda has a lightsaber and is bad-ass with it. *I know these things may have been in books or comics, but this was the first time 9 year old me saw it on film in action*
I was spoiled that scene from the fu*king news on TV, I always hoped they would all die for that. I always wanted to be surprised by the scene, it would have been amazing and unexpected.
I love how he hates fighting the Jedi and being the villain. Look at his face after he cut off Anakin’s arm. He looked sad, guilty, and in pain. Even tho he is a Sith, he still has his humanity
Honestly, I think it might not just be guilty about being the villain. Clone Wars has told us he KNEW about Order 66 and what it would do to the Jedi. When he beat not only one of the strongest Jedi knights but also The Chosen One, he had to have been thinking, “Is this it? Is this all the Jedi Order can do?”
Count Dooku is polite and a man of honor. He always gives his opponents the option to surrender. He even tries to persuade them against continuing the fight in a respectful manner.
TheMovieDoctorful Jedi propaganda from a Sith Lord? HAH! Hardly. Honor is a chain. If the Count had valued that chain, he would not have joined us, who seek to BREAK every chain upon us.
G E T R E K T 905 every Sith is different. Dooku was hoping for a real challenge to test himself against, and was disappointed. Additionally, Sidious had instructed him to tell Obi Wan that there was a Sith Lord in control of the senate(don’t ask me why, it was just part of his plan), and Obi Wan hadn’t yet delivered the message. So Dooku needed him alive, which is why he hesitated to strike him down several times.
Dooku could have fried Anakin much more thoroughly with force lightning, but chooses to just disable him Dooku gives Obi-Wan the chance to back down (again) After striking Obi-Wan's arm, Dooku could have run him through with the lightsaber or hit him with lightning, but instead chooses to just give him a little flick on the leg to disable him In contrast to his speed and unpredictability in the rest of the scene, Dooku clearly telegraphs his 'execution' of Obi-Wan, and waits to bring the strike down until Anakin ignites his lightsaber Dooku looks disappointed after slicing off Anakin's arm, and chooses to push him away and turn off his lightsaber rather than finish the job Dooku gives Yoda a traditional salute as a sign of respect, which Yoda chooses not to return When Yoda is struggling to hold up the pillar, Dooku chooses to flee rather than attack him Dooku looks back to check whether Yoda is holding up the pillar as he climbs aboard his ship, and only closes the ship's door and retracts the ramp once Yoda has completely neutralized the pillar I have nothing but respect for Dooku in this scene
I agree with everything…except when you said that he looked “disappointed”: you couldn’t be more wrong since he actually felt exhausted, he didn’t think that Anakin could go toe to toe against him. He didn’t know him since he left the order much earlier…he probably heard of him from Palpatine, and let’s not forget that Dooku was in his 70’s in this point of the story 😐
Additionally, when he lifts Obi and pushes him away, he could have had him passed through his light saber and game over. Did he do that because he knew about Anakin's fate and just wanted to build anger in him?🤔
I love that just after he lobs off Anakin’s arm you can tell just how much he hates doing this, the guy was still a Jedi at heart even if he let himself be duped by Palpatine
I think it ties into the fact that he fights with curved-hilt dueling sabers rather than standard combat sabers - he loves lightsaber combat when it's aristocratic dueling, but when he actually has to shed blood, it soils the nobility of it. Just goes to show that, despite legitimate complaints about the prequel trilogy, it had some incredible characters.
no No Did Qui-Gon finish training Obi-Wan? I hear it is a long process and Qui-Gon died early while Obi-Wan was still rather young. Anakin was probably older in Episode 3 than Obi-Wan was in Episode 1. Anakin still had a master while Obi-Wan had to take an apprentice. That probably explains it.
+Avery Calhoun He's likely using both hands to counter Anakins Djem So. Because Djem So focuses on brute strength and over whelming, Dooku probably had to use both hands to compensate for his lack of strength. That's would be one explanation. Do note that at this time I don't think the concept of 7 light saber forms were developed yet.
@@jaybomb5638 ok, but that’s not relating with the comment. Dead or not, his wish wouldn’t have come to fruition, since the matter is that the films aren’t being made anymore.

Dooku is such a workhorse. He duels Anakin, and wins. Then he duels obi wan, and wins. Then immediately after he duels YODA, and is able to put up a really good fight and escape.
According to formerly canon EU (now known as Legends), Dooku was the strongest Jedi Master of the Order and the most respected member of the Council third only to the Grandmasters Yoda and Windu. When he left the Order, it was a shock and a great blow to the Order. That is why the others had such a hard time believing he turned to the Dark Side. He was an exceptional Jedi. And he left the Order only because of political reasons. He is also considered to be one of the greatest duelists of all time, the single living master of the Lightsaber Form II, Makashi, which is a form spesificly designed for one-on-one duels between two lightsaber users.
+Starkraven 42 Actually, the reason was that he hated the Republic and loved the Jedi Order. You see, as you know, the Republic didn't have any kind of armed forces back then, so when the need arised, it was the Jedi Order whose blood was spilled. Dooku and his master, Sifo Dyas, secretly started the clone army plan but in the meantime, any time a rebellion started in a remote location, or any time pirates started attacking trade ships, or any time Outer Rim gangs became a greater problem than usual, the Republic sent for the Jedi Order. Jedi would die, become traumatised or even turn to Dark Side in these expedition. There were only a few thousands of them, and because the Republic Senate was too stubborn to admit that they needed an army, their numbers got fewer and fewer. Young padawans, promising knights were lost because of the Republic. So he decided to leave the Order to save it. He was a noble before he joined the Order. His family had political pull back in his home planet. So he left the order and took back his family title Count, and he joined the political world of the Republic, in order to destroy it from within. Thus, the Seperatist Movement. He had noble intentions. I think Dooku is the best example of Dark Side's manipulative and corrupting power. He didn't realise what he was getting into when he accepted the support of a certain robed individual who promised to make him stronger and help him win his fight.
@@slickmanx4207 No but Palpatine feared that Dooku was training Ventress to help him overthrow Palpatine. Which is why Palpatine ordered Dooku to eliminate Ventress and prove his allegiance to him. Dooku got scared and followed through but failed to kill Ventress. Then she became a torn in his side. Dooku should have just pretended to kill her and given her a chance to escape. Then paid a mercenary or gotten a droid to deliver her a secret message. Then teamed with with Ventress and Grievous and executed Palpatine. They could trap him and after they kill him they could take control of everything. Dooku could even admit that Palpatine was a sith Lord and expose him then publicize that info to destabilize the Republic.
@@billclark5055 Dooku admitting that Palpatine is Sidious probably won't do much since Palpatine basically controls the Republic Senate and is actually loved by the Republic. Question is, how would the Separatist like the Trade Federation react to this if they found out the person that schemed with them is none other the chancellor of the Republic? (Only Dooku knew that Palpatine is Sidious). Would they still follow Dooku after? Sure, they know Sidious is a Sith Lord that most likely a scheming senator of the Republic but a chancellor whose planet they were told to invaded and the person that pissed them off by advising Supreme Chancellor Valorum to tax them in exchange of allowing the Trade Federation to militarize their ships while majority of the galaxy are in massive debt to them(Naboo is one of the planets in debt since pretty sure the Trade Federation normally blockades planets that are in debt)? That's a bulk of Dooku's support, a faction that funds the majority of the Separatist military.
God, I love how much Dooku's dueling style seems to be based around disarming and disabling his opponent. Such a stark contrast from the raging bull anticts you see from other big name Sith. Such a classy dark side user.
He's a form II user so the focus is in quick and safe strikes from an uncommitted stance. His skill in this form allows him to pick apart his opponent with ease and finish them at his leisure. The reason why he lost to Anakin was because Anakin favored a beatdown style that played to his advantage as a physical superior.
@@machdude3366 the Seven Forms aren't like rock paper scissors. Dooku was second to Yoda alone in lightsaber combat when he left the Order and improved further under Sidious. Anakin beat him because he's the Chosen One. Not through any mastery of lightsaber dueling (though his skill *was* great, Dooku was still on another level entirely), but by the sheer power he took from the Dark Side. And the fact that Dooku had been holding back throughout the duel under Sidious' orders.

I love how with Maul, he was going 2-1 against Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan but had to work to separate them, took hits from both of them, killed a Jedi Master but also died to a Padawan. But when Dooku goes 2-1 against Anakin, a Padawan and Obi-Wan, a Jedi Knight, he just absolutely dismantles them with pure ease, having fun as he does it, before going on to equal Master Yoda. Tbh that’s abit biased as he thought Anakin and Obi wan separately whilst Maul was fighting both at the same time and had a clear advantage still. Plus Yoda didn’t have it in him to kill his former apprentice if he wanted Dooku dead it would been quick like Sidious vs Maul
@@bigmac159 You're pretty uninformed if you think Yoda could've done any better against Dooku here than he did. I suggest reading the canon comic, The Mission to Tatooine. They stopped force fighting and began their duel. Both have 17k midichlorians btw. Yoda isn't really stronger than Dooku in the force. Maybe he has more raw output, but Dooku is more precise and applies it better during combat. Neither is inherently better than the other. The thing about force powers is that you need a massive gap on your opponent to beat them with it. Dooku or Sidious or Yoda could mop up Obi-Wan with the force any day for example, but not each other. That's also why Dooku prefers dueling. Inches matter. If you're 5% better all around, you win. That's what happened in The Mission To Tatooine too. Dooku disarmed Yoda, which opened him up to force lightning. That's how Dooku uses the force. Precise, well-timed application.
Anakin's choice to slice the power cable was actually pretty smart. He was trying to gain an advantage by plunging them into darkness, rendering Dooku unable to read his body body language and anticipate his next move. He would have to rely on the lightsaber blade movements to fight. Didn't work obviously, but still smart.
It always seemed metaphorical for me, that Anakin made darkness. The physical darkness could be useful for him of course, but it was much more like a hint for his inclination toward the dark side. It says a lot, that Obi-Wan is left out from this part of the fight.
Uh no? Dooku's force powers are way stronger, Anakin put himself at a disadvantage by doing that, Dooku trusts his instincts more because he's way more experienced.
If you watch Carefully at 4:22, Dooku turns around, and waits a moment to make sure Yoda catches the falling pillar. Then keep an eye on it and you will see the ship ramp doesn't close until Anakin is safe and the pillar has fallen to the side. THEN Dooku runs. That, in combination with the look of failure Dooku gives when he cuts off Anakin's arm all suggests he's been instructed not to kill Anakin. I think he had to maim him because Anakin DID threaten him a bit during the lightsaber duel. YES, this movie has problems, but you gotta appreciate that Lucas at least had a vision for these movies, and character's actions actually make sense (unlike some newer star wars movies that i won't name)
Count Dooku's lightsaber is pretty good, the curved hilt increased precision and handling, thus it was ideal for duels plus it complimented Dooku's fighting style.
Actually I wonder how exactly does a curved lightsaber ergonomically do help with precision and handling, instead of the constant one-liner “fit better in the palm” explanation I’ve always seen it as having a curved lightsaber would angle the blade closer to the target so the user wouldn’t need to make wide swings for the blade to hit its target
I first thought his curve was just for show, but I just realized that it gives his wrists a break, he doesn’t have to use them in wide angles to swing, it’s always pointing forward, all Dooku has to do is swing.

Yet..he STILL has quite a bit of shit to learn. It just really goes to show there’s always something new for you to learn.
Tom.There are different lightsaber forms. Dooku used makashi and was considered to be the greatest living master of the technique, mastering it nearly to its fullest potential. Yoda uses ataru, a form where agility and jumping around are used to overwhelm your opponent, this is the same form Ahsoka uses.
***** If you watch all of the clone wars, you see how Ahsoka jumps around whenever she is in lightsaber combat, it's just that she never went against someone as experienced as Dooku to have to use ataru to its fullest extent. Yoda needs to try and overwhelm Dooku, because Makashi is a form that focuses on precise attacks, Yoda needs to be jumping around so Dooku doesn't take the advantage.
The point of Makashi is to do precise attacks and is usually used against a single opponent. Precise attacks are difficult to defend against, which is why Yoda keeps moving and jumping around, to overwhelm dooku since his form isn't focused on defending like soresu.
Dooku's form II of saber fighting is designed to counter most of the other forms, which is why Obi Wan's form III, which is defense-heavy, was overwhelmed and Anakin's form V, which is power-reliant, was easily countered. Yoda's form IV, Ataru, proved more difficult, because not only is he a master at it, but his size and dexterity make him almost impossible to handle.
However Dooku was beaten by Anakin's Form V since form V is not just brute force but also counter attack. Dooku's form's weakness is form V. Form V is essentially made by Form III masters which needed more offence. Dooku only won that time because he was more experienced as a warrior but Anakin improved his skills so much but at the cost of giving in to his anger.
I love how if you look closely at Dooku right after he beats Annakin, he is clearly catching his breath as if that duel actually gave him a run for his money, it's a good way of showing that even though Dooku was the more powerful fighter, he was still fighting the jedi that would one day become Darth Vader
@@J10005 he hesitated to strike down on Obi Wan until Anakin had ignited his lightsaber. And he didn't personally kill any Jedi. His troops did, but he offered mercy to the Jedi multiple times.

So many people forget Dooku literally 2v1ed Anakin and Obi-Wan TWICE and did it fluently. Not to mention his character is written so beautifully and portrayed so amazingly by Christopher Lee.

The thing is that Christopher said he could have done the choreography himself but at that time he was 80 and his legs wouldn't have been able to keep up. A pity because he had amazing talents in his sword fight scenes.
It’s noteworthy that despite his betrayal, Count Dooku still respects his former master enough to give him the proper sword salute (03:25) before crossing blades, which is done in acknowledgement and respect of the caliber of your opponent, such as their skills, ability, and character. This is in contrast to Dooku’s other engagements, where he simply starts fighting without a salute even when he would have been reasonably able to without breaking up the pace of the fight, thanks to monologing. It was an interesting choice to have Yoda ignore this and not return or at least acknowledge this sign of respect, which I would think would be in Yoda’s character. Realistically, though, I think they were more focused on giving Yoda his bad ass moment to shine and overlooked this gentlemanly gesture that Sir Christopher Lee brought to his character.
to be fair, that is how you would do the opening stance of yoda's form (iv), both of your hands on the saber in a nearly perfect vertical position, and dooku did his as well (ii)
At the midnight showing I was at, people cheered like crazy. Whenever I hear people say how everyone hated them showing Yoda fight, I remember that at that midnight showing and one the following night, that fight got the loudest positive reactions I ever saw.
mriddley when i went, everyone, including myself, starting laughing at how ridiculous the entire thing was. And that was after being majorly disappointed by the duel between Anakin & Dooku...
The novelization's take on the fight in Ep III is quite interesting. Basically both Kenobi and Skywalker hustle Dooku by starting out the fight using clunky forms that Dooku believes he can overcome with ease: Ataru for Kenobi and Shien for Skywalker. (I believe that these are the forms they use against him here in Ep II.) But halfway through the fight they switch: Kenobi to Soresu, and Skywalker to Djem So. These are MUCH harder for Dooku to deal with, especially together. His slamming of Kenobi is a bit of a panic move that uses up most of his force energy reserves, and from then on it's a straight duel against Anakin, who starts to tap into the dark side and beats Dooku at a canter.
The fact that Anakin's utilizing his environment after slashing the electrical cable really shows his natural skill, and it's smart to use your environment by any means necessary. This detail foreshadows his mastered skills later on as he turned into Darth Vader. Using your brains along with force powers is a tactical idea.
4:18 I wonder if Dooku later regretted not thinking "I should take the opportunity that Yoda is fully focused on saving them and use a saber throw, eliminating the wisest and most powerful Jedi, along with any risk he or anyone he trains might pose to the Sith"
Fun Fact: Christopher Lee (Dooku's Actor) was a professional saber duelist and he was chosen by George Lucas For Not Only His Resemblance But Also His Saber Skills
Yes, but Sir Christopher Lee's fighting style was not based in two-handed use, thus why his lightsaber had a specially designed hilt. It was made to be handled like a rapier, which lended itself to his fighting style
Also Christopher Lee actually had a chance to be apart of the original trilogy but he declined it cause He thought it wasn't going work out, but his best friend and co star in many films Peter Cummings (I may have but he'd the name but actor who played Moff Tarkin) even asked him to join and when the prequels came Christopher said he won't pass the offer again. And thus left a wonderful character in a iconic franchise.
He was selected by George Lucas? It looks like he just showed up one day and started beating up all the other actors. And Lucas thought it looked cool so he left it in.
I love how shocked Dooku looks when Yoda deflects his force lightning. It’s one of the very few times that he seems to be genuinely caught off guard by something. Especially the way he just starts slowly reaching for his lightsaber after the second attempt.
He wasn’t shocked at the skill. He was shocked at Anakins power. For a split second he overpowered Dooku and forced him back with a decent flurry. But Dooku being a seasoned duelist recovers and retaliates and that catches the far less skilled Anakin off guard and as a result puts him on the defense and costs him one of the two savers. Anakin attempts to regain the advantage by breaking off and killing the lights and the two exchange evenly as youthful eyes see better in the dark but once the light returns Dooku regains the advantage again and ends the fight using the unconventional under handed swing from below. Anakin wasn’t so skilled that Dooku found hims special. He simply caught Dooku off guard for a second and that’s it. After Dooku began the offense the fight was in his favor.
@cameronmatlock5210 and that was stupid because you don’t get more skilled when you’re mad. It’s the opposite. Hence why you taught an opponent to get the angry so that they don’t think straight and you can beat them easier. Anakin should’ve just been pummeling Dooku into submission rather than deftly taking both his hands. (Anakin should’ve been hammering on Dooku like Luke did to him in Jedi.). As for Yoda not beating Dooku I gotta ask you what duel are you watching? Yoda had Dooku on the back foot the entire fight. Dooku simply played Yoda’s love for his padawans against him and fled while yoda had to save Obi and Anakin. One can argue that that in and of itself is a skill but not superior dueling. Simply a smart way of getting away from a superior opponent. Dooku was in now way equal to yoda. Not even close. As for Anakin losing to Obi Wan? In the meta sense he was destined to lose because how the fuck else does the fight end. It’s a prequel. He loses. We know he loses. But in the context of the duel on mutafar it’s a case of “you can’t beat the man that fought you everything you know”. Obi Wan wasn’t as strong in the force but he knows Anakin and he knows his weakness which is his hyper aggressive style. He simply had to lead Anakin to his own defeat by defending until the right moment. You see it with the bridge collapse. You see it again with the bridge falling over the falls and then finally when Anakin tried to attack Obi from low ground. Each time Anakin tan headlong into the trap and Obi wan set it off.
@cameronmatlock5210 Sorry dude but I’m gonna need receipts for that. To quote my Sifu, “If you believe everything I say you’re a fool”. And if I’m questioning him I definitely questioning you. No offense And even if that’s true being filled with adrenaline and rage in combat and fighting through guys who are trained to the barest minimum in melee combat is not the same thing as facing guys who are trained to fight exclusively hand to hand or in this case blade to blade. I’ve seen Green berets submit to blue belts on the mat. I’ve seen gym bros in roid rage paint their own blood all over the mats when they tried to take on a BJJ black belt. Hell I’ve seen an 80 Filipino Kali expert take a marine in his prime in a knife sparring session. Skill beats anger my dude.
@cameronmatlock5210 Dude I don’t believe you because anyone can say anything on the internet. You have any idea how many stolen valor cases there are? And really? I’m weak because I don’t believe you? That’s the very heart of strength is to think for yourself and not to believe things just because someone tells you something. If I told you that at eight years old I was hit by a car going 50 mph and walked away without anything worse than a few scratches you’d be a fool to believe me without proof. And the greatest teachers are the ones who encourage that mindset. Such as Tom Brown Jr, a tracker who trained Green Berets and Special forces guys to survive in the wilderness with just their bare hands. Maybe it did happen. Maybe it didn’t. But not believing you when I’ve never met you and therefore have no reason to is not a weakness my dude.
@@canderoussnurd4265 ''Dooku was in now way equal to yoda. Not even close.'' Ever read The Mission to Tatooine? Canon comic? Yoda straight up loses to Dooku. They are equals. You need to inform yourself better. Dooku and Yoda have equal midichlorian counts and Dooku is the better duelist.

Two times. What was the outcome of those fights? He lost both. First against Dooku and then against Sidious.
1:37 I love this exchange. You can tell how caught off guard Dooku was by the 2nd lightsaber, to a point where he had to back up quite a bit. Had lost his footing or focus, that would have been the end of it for him, but we watch as he quickly regains control of the duel and puts Anakin back on the ropes until he can slice the saber out of his hand Such a great detail
Funny thing is Dual wielding is the worst style in a Jedi Vs sith battle as proven during Jedi Knight videogames ages ago. In fact dooku dispatch of first lighrsaber in couple of seconds Dual wield is Great Vs many opponents without sabers
He basically just fends off Anakin's quick flurry, then moves right back on the offensive and cuts that strategy short. Then once Anakin tries to do overhead dueling, he matches that and slices his hand right off. Nasty, nasty duelist with a lightsaber. He basically outright demolished two highly capable Jedi in a row.
I hear so much criticism over the close up shots of Anakin and Dooku's faces during their duel, but I honestly love those shots. Such an intense effect seeing the lightsaber blades crossing their faces, especially in the darker lighting conditions.
The year is 2022, still remember watching this scene for the first time and just being mesmerized. It was the first time anyone had seen Yoda in real combat. When he opens his sabre, the noise, the war scream, so epic!
This fight really shows the skill difference between Yoda and Obi-Wan/Anakin, the pace with Yoda was so much faster no wonder Dooku was disappointed, he'd be more disappointed if he saw the lightsaber fights in the sequel though.
@@j.j.1517 Obi wan show had pretty good light saber duel fights. Prequels are a mix of good and a shit moments due to the dialogue and just awkward moments. The only star wars that was genuinely perfect was the original Luke Skywalker Trilogy. After them 3, the shows quality drastically fell.
Chuckiele No doubt. Force knowledge is Yodas speciality. I mean he defended Palpatines force lightning attack..Im sure he could handle Count Dookus. He would've got destroyed eventually..hence the running away.
Dooku, despite overpowering him, was visibly exhausted after the duel with Anakin. At 2:21 he definitely has that “this one is gonna be a problem down the road” type expression on his face.
I always do that as a look of disappointment. He probably sensed how strong Anakin was, and Obi-Wan’s reputation precedes him, yet he overcame them both pretty easily. Shutting off his lightsaber implies he was going to just leave instead of executing them. My opinion of course
I always took it as more of an expression of pity/regret rather than exhaustion. Dooku is one of the best lightsaber duelists of his time, and he was probably mildly impressed that Anakin, who was just a padawan, was actually putting up a decent fight against him, performing even better than his master did. He probably felt somewhat regretful that he had to end up maiming such a promising young duelist.
What’s interesting to me with anakin taking on dooku was how he used every advantage he could get. Kenobi tried to take him pound for pound against him and dooku countered him at every move. However with anakin, you can see he is very versatile, even fighting him with 2 lightsabers. And when dooku evens the playing field, skywalker cuts the lights to get an edge on dooku, until dooku cuts his hand. Really shows how good anakin was at fighting
i agree. only thing i hate about this fight is how anakin holds his arm out, inviting it to be cut off, and how obi was crippled by minor wounds lol (unless those wounds sliced through muscle, then i get it, but they looked shallow) other than that, among other minor mistakes in both trilogiesn i love em all.
I just love the dueling form that Count Dooku uses. It's just simple fencing in real life but the fat he took down two aggressive opponents using a faster and stronger style is impressive.
Er.. you may want to brush up on your Star Wars lore there. Obi Wan was known as the most skilled user of a defensive style called Shien, not an offensive one. It's actually probably THE most defensive style which had almost 0 offense to it. Anakin used a slightly more offensive variant of that and didn't use it aggressively until he became Vader. Dooku's style isn't as basic as simple fencing, but it is a similar concept. The movie downplayed it a lot.
+cdwwg Actually, while still training under Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan practiced one of the most aggressive lightsaber forms, form IV (Ataru), just like his master. It was only when he saw the disadvantages of the form firsthand when Qui-Gon was tired, cornered and killed by Darth Maul that he switched his fighting style to the most defensive of all. This is not form V (Shien/Djem So), but rather form III (Soresu). Form V, however, being more offensive was Anakin's preferred style, which he also continually used against the much more experienced Count Dooku, who is using the graceful form II (Makashi).
Count Dooku had the unfair advantage of an epic voice.

Dooku is civilized. I mean look at him...he's the only combatant who ever saluted his foe before going into a battle. That guy was classy.
When Makashi was the dominant form, all lightsaber duels began this way.
Yeah, pretty good character except for the G-D stupid name... like a 5 year old made it up? Or what? "Dooku"? Really? LAME

Definition of Dooku - The literal Japanese word for poison.
Defeating and humiliating Obi Wan and The Chosen One back to back and then stalemating Yoda whilst managing to escape and accomplish all your mission goals is the most impressive feat of all lightsaber duels in Star Wars. Dooku is so damn underrated.

@@account8158 i dont know dude

Christopher Lee: Hold my beer.

(Christopher Lee had a fondness for Aquavit and he said Scandinavian food was his favourite.)
More like,
Dooku: Master Critic you disappoint me.
Hold my curved saber
My honest opinion is that Episode 2 had best sword fights in Star Wars. Not too slow and not too long like the ones in Episode 3. The new trilogy has nothing compared to this.
I love Dooku's style and appearance all the way, his voice and aristocratic manners. He is like an old fencing master. Christopher Lee was really perfect for this role (r.i.p.)
It's pretty impressive that in his late 70s Lee played two iconic second-string villains in the two biggest blockbuster trilogies of the era: Lord of the Rings (Saruman) and Star Wars (Dooku).
TitanFind absolutely agree 👍
Another reason I loved his Dracula, you could rely on him offering you a cup of tea before biting your neck!
I agree. Lee completely nailed the role. I love how he just straight up owns Obi-Wan in such a graceful manner. Sadly, George Lucas underused him and the writing was pretty bad at times.

He's saluting him. Showing respect for his old Jedi master; that and Dooku knows Yoda is the Jedi most capable of defeating him.

Dooku is such a workhorse. He duels Anakin, and wins. Then he duels obi wan, and wins. Then immediately after he duels YODA, and is able to put up a really good fight and escape.
escapes to duel Gandalf, and wins that one too.
Hazar Özgen I heard somewhere the political reason was the council lying about Qui-gon death.
He didn't realise what he was getting into when he accepted the support of a certain robed individual who promised to make him stronger and help him win his fight.
except for one thing: its all fake! and none of it actually exists! so stop taking it too seriously
1:14 the smile count dooku did when he was winning was perfect

didnt dooku try to defeat palpatine?
Slick Manx420 what? when
@@slickmanx4207 No but Palpatine feared that Dooku was training Ventress to help him overthrow Palpatine.

@@Mare_Man I don't know if he could have taken Windu. That would have been just a fantastic fight to watch, with two of the best ever duellists with two drastically different styles of combat facing off.

He's just extraordinary and such fun to watch.

Dooku outright beats Yoda in it. He often did at the Jedi Order too. And Yoda often beat him. Mostly they stalemated. The two are roughly equals.

''It is obvious that this contest cannot be decided by our knowledge of the force, but by our skill with a lightsaber.'' - Count Dooku
And Yoda acknowledged it.
It worked until it didn't.
Yeah it sorta foreshadows Vader's tendency to manipulate the environment to his advantage, like in episode 5 against luke
It always seemed metaphorical for me, that Anakin made darkness. The physical darkness could be useful for him of course, but it was much more like a hint for his inclination toward the dark side. It says a lot, that Obi-Wan is left out from this part of the fight.
Indeed.
The only real spark of wit that impulsive idiot had in the entire prequel trilogy.
Uh no? Dooku's force powers are way stronger, Anakin put himself at a disadvantage by doing that, Dooku trusts his instincts more because he's way more experienced.

Count Dooku's lightsaber is pretty good, the curved hilt increased precision and handling, thus it was ideal for duels plus it complimented Dooku's fighting style.
Christopher Lee was a fencer, so he actuallly requested for the curved hilt
Allegedly, the curved design is based on one of the swords used by King Charlemagne, who Christopher Lee was a descendant of.
Actually I wonder how exactly does a curved lightsaber ergonomically do help with precision and handling, instead of the constant one-liner “fit better in the palm” explanation
I’ve always seen it as having a curved lightsaber would angle the blade closer to the target so the user wouldn’t need to make wide swings for the blade to hit its target
Used to have that toy when I was a kid used to beat the shit outa my brother with it 😂
I first thought his curve was just for show, but I just realized that it gives his wrists a break, he doesn’t have to use them in wide angles to swing, it’s always pointing forward, all Dooku has to do is swing.

It has to be disconcerting for a man to be in that type of fight against something with that type of weapon, swinging it like that at ball height.
Dude your knowledge is commendable.
I believe Obi-Wan took up form three after this duel.
You're a damn nerd

Anakin copying Dooku’s moves, but for some reason Anakin’s anger gave him some sort of focus. But Dooku cheated by doing the little dance, while maintaining his balance, and took Anakin by surprise. Seems after that disastrous fight Ani and Obi each mastered a new fighting style but added to it.

What you mean he won against both obi wan and anakin so even during his old age Dooku kicked ass. He was also about to kill obi wan
Count dooku is dooku in his prime

I love this part when Dooku knew he was going to won this duel so he starts to smile at Obi-Wan :D.
Dooku wasn't even trying. He mopped the floor with Obi-Wan, both here and in Revenge of the Sith.
VYNLT agreed 🤝
@@TitanFind Cool
@@TitanFind But Sidious was also interfering with the fight both before and during to make Anakin win.
The fact that Anakin's utilizing his environment after slashing the electrical cable really shows his natural skill, and it's smart to use your environment by any means necessary.
This detail foreshadows his mastered skills later on as he turned into Darth Vader. Using your brains along with force powers is a tactical idea.
Obi Wan is such a lazy bum. Has two slight flesh wounds and lies on the ground like some fucking doll.
4:18 I wonder if Dooku later regretted not thinking "I should take the opportunity that Yoda is fully focused on saving them and use a saber throw, eliminating the wisest and most powerful Jedi, along with any risk he or anyone he trains might pose to the Sith"
I was also thinking that
+ZER0 Evasive i don't think dooku knows the saber throw its a Vader thing
Allon Harris It was a general purpose saber technique, most common in Jedi Guardians, which Dooku used to be.
I wonder if Yoda later regretted not throwing that giant ass thing at dooku's ship.
SerosStudioX1 Not at that point, later on, he had no problem executing the queen of Zygerria or order Ventress to kill the king of the Toydarians.
"Much to learn, you still have."
The implication that Yoda taught Dooku everything he knows, but not everything Yoda himself knows.
Even dooku was shocked of how skilled Anakin is at such a young age.
No offense
And even if that’s true being filled with adrenaline and rage in combat and fighting through guys who are trained to the barest minimum in melee combat is not the same thing as facing guys who are trained to fight exclusively hand to hand or in this case blade to blade.

I love this exchange. You can tell how caught off guard Dooku was by the 2nd lightsaber, to a point where he had to back up quite a bit. Had lost his footing or focus, that would have been the end of it for him, but we watch as he quickly regains control of the duel and puts Anakin back on the ropes until he can slice the saber out of his hand
Such a great detail
Yeah I just saw that too
Yep, had he been against a wall or something, we would've gotten a headless dooku one episode early.
Funny thing is Dual wielding is the worst style in a Jedi Vs sith battle as proven during Jedi Knight videogames ages ago. In fact dooku dispatch of first lighrsaber in couple of seconds
Dual wield is Great Vs many opponents without sabers
I think Obi-Wan teleporting probably caught him off guard tbf. 🤔
Pretty good visuals for lightsaber duels. Disney tried to replicate it, but lacked the accompanying choreography of these films.
the lack of lightsaber collision sounds make it sound awkward to me.
It looks silly tbh.
I kinda feel like they did it to use less CGI for Christopher Lee and give him more action.
I think it was homage to the older movies which did the same.

even as a child, Yoda just pulling his lightsaber to his hand with the force instead of reaching for it had me hyped
Dooku, despite overpowering him, was visibly exhausted after the duel with Anakin. At 2:21 he definitely has that “this one is gonna be a problem down the road” type expression on his face.
I always thought that was shock on his fave from chopping off Anakin's arm but you may be right with your conclusion
@@Attam0604 it was shock. He wasn't allowed to hurt anakin
I always do that as a look of disappointment. He probably sensed how strong Anakin was, and Obi-Wan’s reputation precedes him, yet he overcame them both pretty easily. Shutting off his lightsaber implies he was going to just leave instead of executing them. My opinion of course
No, if he was exhausted there's no way he would have been able to hold his own against Yoda.
Dooku- "I've become more powerful than any Jedi, even you."

Really shows how good anakin was at fighting
say what you will about the prequels, the fights were quite good.
i agree. only thing i hate about this fight is how anakin holds his arm out, inviting it to be cut off, and how obi was crippled by minor wounds lol (unless those wounds sliced through muscle, then i get it, but they looked shallow) other than that, among other minor mistakes in both trilogiesn i love em all.
I'll give you that one at least

Sergej Döner fair enough the bespin fight was badass.

Conclusion: Don't fight with older people
I just love the dueling form that Count Dooku uses. It's just simple fencing in real life but the fat he took down two aggressive opponents using a faster and stronger style is impressive.
Thomas D obi wan was defensive and Yoda outfenced him
Er.. you may want to brush up on your Star Wars lore there.
Form V, however, being more offensive was Anakin's preferred style, which he also continually used against the much more experienced Count Dooku, who is using the graceful form II (Makashi).
cdwwg Obi Wan using soresue which is defense and Anakin using djem so which is a lot of power strikes and brute force
Thomas D Obi-Wan uses the all-defensive form, Anakin used a combination of Ataru and Shien and Yoda used Ataru but Dooku did not beat him.
This scene is iconic as it was Yoda’s first lightsaber fight on screen.
Both Yoda & Yaddles first on screen battles were against Count Dooku.
