When this came out in 1974, this song changed my life. Eddie Hazel awesome guitars and George Clinton's words made this track stand the test of time. For those who want to know, there is a source where the lyrics were inspired by, a short book called As A Man Thinketh by James Allen written about 1894.
I read this book last year and never connected it to this song. After seeing your comment & registering, I'm blown away. Thank you so much for taking the time to point this out, it makes it all the more special. Everything's connected.
True story: Some months ago I was going through a rough patch in my life. Lost my job, girlfriend dumped me, couldn't afford to go back to university. I was really feeling depressed. One night I was driving back home and I was convinced that I was going to kill myself when I got home. I was listening to my personal Spotify playlist, and when I was about 15 minutes from home this song came on. I'm really into psychedelic rock so the guitar at the beginning kept me listening, even though I had never heard this song in my life. Then the lyrics came.... I've never been so deeply touched in my life. I even cried all the way home. Went to bed instead of killing myself. Later that week I not only got hired on at another job, but met a beautiful woman that I am now dating. This song saved my life and, to this day, I have no idea how it ended up on a playlist only I can add songs to. Peace and spread love.
I will trust in the Lord will do the unexpected for me soon in my life I could never imagine or have dream of to move forward here I am Lord guide me and lead to remain steadfast my God's grace is sufficient yes Lord help us Lord for I am a living testimony of your grace and mercy I lay all my burdens down to you Lord let not my heart be heavy and burden down heal and restore our peace and hope in us and around us give the strength to rise above all to get back up glory hallelujah thank you Lord for your grace and mercy father God in the name of Jesus and the Holy Ghost Amen
The lyrics to the song are loosely based a book called "As a Man Thinketh", a literary essay by James Allen, published in 1902. Also the basis of The Law of Attraction (you reap what you sew) Best wishes to all!
Man one of the greatest songs ever . This song always had a special place in my heart but listening to this on shrooms ... man I cried like a little baby . Cried my soul out , leaned on my window and loooked at my city at night and just bawled . One of the most beautiful nights ever . Never felt so at peace as that night . The impact this song had on my life is huge , ty Funkadelic and specially to Eddie ! PLAY ON ...
Crazy how shrooms can make you see deep into things one don't normally think about on a regular basis and make you you have an appreciation for life itself because life is beautiful and we don't seem to recognize that day to day.
Inspiration for ALL walks of Life, the lyrics are so true. I wish the views for this video was 6,000,000,000,000 instead of 12,000 because EVERYONE in the WORLD needs to hear such knowledge.. Thank-You Mr. George Clinton. Thank-You SO VERY MUCH!
When everything was lost and then I heard it randomly for the first time, it was like a map to find me again. No doubt since then I firmly believe that the universe, life, god, or who knows what, puts in our lives what we so desire, and gives us those answers that we need, in some way or another, with music, a poem, a book that for some reason you came across, a phrase you saw, a person, I firmly believe that everything that happens brings with it a message that we need to hear to became what we want.
The words which George Clinton preaches here are the wisest words ever about the essense of life, to me anyway. This is just the most therapeutic song ever
yeah this is a favorite too but 'i'll stay' is soooooo funky -i play it a little bit more than 'good thoughts, bad thoughts... but love the whole 'standing on the verge of getting it on' album.
Here is the link to read the book or freely download it (pdf). Go to - the big hump dot com - and go to writers and then click Walter Humphries. I apologize for the crazy 'link' as a way to get to the book (for free), but youtube won't allow links in comments. I loved reading this book. It was nice to discover one of the influences behind George Clinton. This book still influences many people today. Motivational speakers and preachers freely quote from the book but never acknowledge the source.
ASE'! This is some of the ancient wisdom that had been lost, buried, hidden for thousands of years! Our ancestors had this knowledge but humanity is becoming more conscious with each passing day. George Clinton knew also Earth, Wind and Fire. They were trying to tell us back then.

This song has been in my mind since 1975 I knew it was truthful at 67 still listening, still applicable. Totally woke.
Agreed, I am 68 and have listening since the 70s until now, it aroused my soul as truthful I just kept it to myself year in year out.
