Great content, as usual. I just drained the oil from my like-new Tohatsu 6hp outboard motor and it smells like gas. I know I overfilled the oil last time I added oil. Could this be the cause? It’s possible I over-primed it too but I’m generally fairly conservative with priming. I’ve read that not running the motor long enough to reach good operating temperatures can do it too but I usually run it for at least 30 minutes. Any ideas on how gas is getting to the crank case?
Here is a good thread for the basically same motor. forums.iboats.com/threads/new-5ph-4stroke-gas-in-oil-what-to-do.156222/ I’ve read Most of the time you will get some gas in oil during break-in or if there are low hrs on the motor. The consensus seems to be idling too long (not getting to operating temp) will definitely cause this. I don’t think priming will cause it because there is little chance you will force gas from the carb into the cylinder and by the rings. I don’t see how over priming or even flooding would cause this. I would change the oil and then recheck on the next oil change. And when I run it, I wouldn’t be afraid to get the revs up and get it warm.
Love your positive review of your 6 hp Merc, however I’m trying to start mine now unsuccessfully after a crank case and drive train oil changes. My red light is blinking and I’ve checked every possible obstruction… Shift lever in neutral, prop adequately, submerged in water, etc. I can’t figure it out. I’ve searched the Internet for assistance and your videos are the best but I’m still stuck.
Man that’s weird. Changing oil shouldn’t impact starting. I would triple check all the obvious stuff like fuel valve, gas tank vent, chock linkage, then try an external tank (vs internal) to rule out gas flow issues. I really can’t see changing the oil as causing a starting problem as long as you have the correct amount of oil
Thanks for the vid- what size washer/gasket does the engine oil drain plug take (and where do you get them)? I just get blank stares from my local marine shops and places like amazon seem to only have washers for the lower unit…😵💫
My 6.0 mercury has been in the garage for 8 years. Your video helped me out a lot because I'm not any kinda fix it guy. I also changed the gas filter and had to fix the tire hub. Any suggestions before I get it back on the water? Thanks
Awesome! The gas is definitely bad; if it still has gas in the lines or carb I would drain all of that and start fresh. If it was stored with gas in the carb you may need to clean the carb. I would just put it in a bucket and run it at home for 10-15 mins. If it starts well and runs, hit the water!
I just had my engine serviced at a dealer a few trips ago. I checked the oil and it was really high. I drained 20 oz of oil out. Any chance it could have damaged anything?
I think this is it.. but wow ouch over $300. www.boats.net/product/mercury/8M0056433?ref=21c8fec30a356a819b535c450020f6327ff1701c I would check at some local marine and boat shops to see is they have a junker or blown motor. Take yours and try a couple different ones to see if an older fits. Can always put new decals on
These videos are coming in super useful for me at this moment! 😅 thank you!
Awesome! I appreciate it thanks!
Wow, that's so easy. So much easier than my Tacoma. Thanks so much. Right to the point.
Thanks! I appreciate the view!
Thanks for the vid! Straight to the point!
Doing oil change on my 2003 Mercury 6 HP. What to do when the oil smells like gas?
Are there any way to change oil while on boat and water? Thanks for great videos, learning so much about my mercury!
Great video
Thanks appreciate the view

@@Skinnyriver thanks for the advice.

I think it’s a #12 8035161 - here is it for $3 www.simmercury.com/oil-drain-plug-washer-8035161/ double check it though
Wow thanks!
Great great!!! Thanks man!

I want to say I flushed all the gas out. Who knows, it was 8 years ago. Yes, I have fresh gas. Thank you again
may want to change out the impeller. Skinny has a vid on how to do this also
Is there a crush washer? Shouldn't it be replaced with every oil change?
It’s a good point, manual says replace if damaged. But it’s so cheap it’s best to buy a bag and change everytime. Sorry I should have mentioned that.
For the 10w-30 do you use regular or synthetic blend??
I use either quicksilver or Mercury marine synthetic
@@Skinnyriver awesome thank you, got my motor running too. It was my float valve, was so gunked up. Cleaned it and starts first pull
Nice, glad it’s running well!
@@Skinnyriver appreciate the help my man

No I think you are ok. It shouldn’t be an issue. If it didn’t smoke a lot then no oil got into the cylinder
How do you count engine hours on your outboard?
You can get a tach/hr meter off Amazon for $20. But honestly most people guess
@@Skinnyriver i see, thank you for responding!
Dont need to change the oil filter?
The 6hp doesn’t have an oil filter. 8HP and up do though
No oil filter?
Not on the 6hp or less
Anyone know where I can get an upper engine cowl for this exact engine?

hi, tell me, is tohatsu outboards 4T oil good?
I’ve never used it but I have never heard anything bad about it.
How much oil does it take this video sucks
It says in the video. Evidently you didn’t watch it
@@Skinnyriverit was not made very clear, your video sucks
