This is the best breakdown of Sam I've seen. No nasty comments or put downs just genuine critiques. To be honest i didn't expect anything else! Pete you are the most informative and straight forward guy in the youtube fitness space.
Oldschool, basic 4-day bro split. I did no days off from Oct 2020-Jan 2022. Was rough but I was also cutting from 243 to 171. I really think the extra fat stores helped me recover.
Great breakdown of Sam and his style of training. I used to train like that as a beginner but after the first 2 years I had to throw in a rest day as much as I mentally couldn’t stand it. Fast forward 10 years and I’ve learned the rest and food is more important than the lfiting
Watch the full video first before commenting he said it's clearly working for him but he wouldn't recommend it to other people if they have no results by this type of training
Did u actually watch the video? Pete is a coach afterall. He is going to point out what athletes can improve on. Nothing anywhere in the video was criticism or hating
Honestly, I dig Sam's perspective and training methods. I've started incorporating more intensity to my routine since watching him and I've seen good results. I don't think I could do the half gallon of Chocolate milk per day... but hey, whatever gets you there. He seems like a really nice young man, and honestly we need a controversial fitness influencer that's not totally fake like the liver prince. Thanks Pete for making a video that seems to be honestly reviewing his training style. Cheers!
I agree. I think his simplistic approach and focusing on the things that matter (training hard and consistent) is something postiive anyone can take away from his videos.
Yep. It's like he's activated a ' hard, heavy, and to failure' switch in my mindset, and it's allowed me to make some real weight increases that I wouldn't have felt capable of a short while ago.
Great video . Applying some of Sam's training principles has seen me really steam ahead in the last month or so. Its almost like there's a ' go heavy, and hard' mental switch that just seems to unlock extra reserves of belief in your own strength and endurance. I'm early on in my journey, and I'm really old...but I'm beyond happy with my gym life right now.
Sir, thank you for making content that covers the basics of bodybuilding training without going into unnecessary detail using fancy terms. But most importantly, thank you for sharing your wisdom without asking for money or trying to sell products using discount codes. Every bodybuilding/fitness channel should be like yours!
Steriods have to be mentioned every single time we talk about people like this. You can never talk about a set, a rep, a workout plan, eating, all of it has to be mentioned with the caveat of steriods.
so i have train PPL 6 to 7 days per week but never worked for me, i made progress but some days i am burned and i felt weak inserting rest days were necessary i did push pull rest legs rest repeat, now i am training 7 days per week push pull arms legs repeat with no days off, but i feel fresh now been on this split for months and i am getting awesome results. the key thing almost every body misses is those arm days are not taxing at all, those are just isolations exercises and it"s a fun day so those are actually kind of a rest days. but if you start to program those arm days differently like adding compound exercises ex - close grip bench for tries or chins for bies then push pull arms legs repeat will really be a demanding program to recover.
I started doing some weight training for jiu jitsu and it 100% helped with my strength and conditioning and actually some of my recovery ! Thanks for the advice coach
Sam is a beast and just a good down to earth dude. I actually built my split off of his, but i only do 5 days a week, at 41 years old i need more rest days than i used to. My 5 day split is this: Sunday back/biceps/rear delts Monday chest/triceps/side delts Wednesday legs/back/rear delts i do heavy rdls shrugs and leg curls Thursday arms and side delts Friday quad focused legs squats leg extensions, and i do calves this day as well. My back and rear delts are my weakest spots, followed by side delts, so I am prioritizing them over everything else. My front delts and chest are ahead of everything else, so I hit them for maintenance
Can you make a video about your thoughts on "optimal lifting"? It's become a trend lately to start training with low volume, high intensity and using mostly machines and cables, rather than free weights. Would like to see you speak on it.
I've been lifting as a natural for 20 years. A 5-day-per-week Bro split is the most effective for me. Each muscle group gets plenty of attention, and I get good recovery. I overtrained and didn't recover as well when I used to hit each muscle twice per week. There's really no such thing as working a muscle once per week on a bro split. Most chest exercises use shoulders and triceps. Shoulder pressing exercises use triceps. Back exercises use biceps. Some tricep exercises use chest. Legs literally only get worked once per week, but I always felt like crap when I hit legs twice per week.
At first i was like "no" lol thinking you jumped on just another Sam Sulek video here... let me make clear though.. i really like Sam.. So i and im sure most of anyone viewing this are and were pleasantly surprised.. Thumbs up Pete.. 👍💪 By far the best video on Sam by an influencer yet!!! Sam would no doubt like this as well since it's just simple, down to earth and nothing but the point, like he is.. i hope this gets seen by many....
I was afraid this was going to be another condemnation video, but this was informative and logical. Thank you for staying the course, Peter. You are a a top tier fitness influencer.
Thoughtful analysis. Sam has figured out what works for him but he did not start there. Bodybuilding is a process and everyone needs to go through their own journey.
Proper recovery is a downfall of the vast majority of people that grind way too much in the gym You grow when you properly recover especially is your legit going hard and actually training vs just moving weight
That Sammy 315 incline bench press toss is picking up followers. I saw a guy at my gym who looked around Sams age but way smaller toss a failed 185 incline bench like Sam did. Nobody was around the barbell so nobody got hurt but the whole thing looked stupid af.
Great analysis ! I believe the only point that isn't touched on is the time it takes to build said muscle. Especially if your going the natural route. Consistency over long periods of time is what ultimately builds muscle on top of what Peter mentioned in this video.
It’s amazing how salty and defensive people get over a critique from a peer. Sams a young guy and is not immune from advice from people like Pete who has vast experience. Don’t get defensive about. Pete is only sharing is knowledge and experience. He is trying to help and improve Sam, not tear him down.
Great video Pete, I agree with everything you say. I’m personally not a fan of his workout methods, I prefer a more rigid approach. I can’t workout by feel. But each to their own, there’s more than one way to skin a cat as they say and if it works for him, it works for him.
Yoir video here actually is amazing cause I’ve wondered about it all. I’m going to the gym every day and wasn’t sure if I should but you’ve given me clarification. I actually respond better and look better through out the week training every day. Also I’m on Trt the last 13 days and start up another cycle February 1st. I’m sure I’ll maintain gains from previous cycle, doing every day training.
I really made good progression with a push, pull, leg split twice in 8 days. And i always train to failure. Gained 20 pounds in 9 months. No steroids. Only creatine and proteïne shakes.
Why is every one bashing Sam? I will tell you why it's jealousy 😂what ever works for him and obviously Works he is bigger than all of those bashing him everyone should do what works for each person it works for him so who gives a shit what he does FFS
Finally someone who understands that when you’re on PEDs, you actually need to recover MORE than if you were natural, for the reasons you listed, but also due to the fact that their training sessions cause more joint/connective tissue fatigue because their muscles are stronger than their connective tissue is. requiring more rest days before they train that body part again, hence why most enhanced follow a bro split. It’s not stupidity, it’s actually very smart
Actual hard training with no days-off works wonders for talented people in their early 20's. For everyone else, it's a recipe for flame out...for guys like Sam & I (I'm completely making this up, I'm a 150lbs 48yo man who just started weight training 7-weeks ago), it's good to go. Sam does come to me from time to time for guidance though...he does not know I exist. Here's some objective truth, mirrors of any size/shape stop me in my tracks as I enjoy flexing & pouting whenever & wherever I have the opportunity. I'm a good looking man.

I agree, most people spin their wheels on optimal but they dont do hard or think than intensity its just adding weigh (with questionable technique) and there are many ways to do such thing. Like real hard sets, the issue is than most "gurus" always saying you have to do "this" like an standard and theres no standard, each is an individual with different needs. Thats what I like about you and your methods. If it works for him well its him and he is pretty advanced, (but also helping half galon of milk+chocolate+whey xD stole it from him, for me thats easier than having another plate of food)
Prioritizing volume over quality is the bane of progress.. Doing 16 sets of chest in one session may look good in your training log, but likely you either did around 10 hard sets and 6 mild ones, or 16 mild ones.. You can destroy your pecs in 6-8 sets if you do sets to failure and throw in a couple dropsets or partials past failure...
Oddly enough you have people like Massive iron saying the split does not matter over the course of 10 years. Is it fair to say that short term higher frequency would be best but over the course of years a bro split and higher frequency splits lead to the same result assuming you overload/recover correctly?
Bro split vs upper/lower in bro split you have 1 leg day a week x52 weeks in a year x10 years that is = 520 leg days in upper/lower you have 2-2.5 leg days a week x52 weeks x10 years = 1300 leg days It is not the same.
I believe Massive iron is saying that because it's about consistency over time. There is no optimal split for everyone because of other life factors. Even though it is " obvious "; people tend to gloss over the consistency of time someone put into achieving a great physique. Instead they focus on training splits and all these new fancy ways to do a exercise cause that's what pushed on social media nowadays.
sam sulek had been critqued by being part of the bodybuilding rabbit hole. commonly promoting gear despite sam not totally advocating it. he is used as an example of how wicked bodybuilding by a science based TCU grad professional. he also claimed that guys like sam should not be admired as they dont promote fitness specially on functionality but i admire and appreciate sam not because of his dedication, but his humour, persona and transparancy makes me engage with his content more. not a fan of his gear hopping but at least the dude trains hard and optimal for himself.

hopefully not too many people try to replicate his incline bench safe at the beginning .. seeing many crushed knees if people overestimate their strength ..
There’s no science behind Sam’s lifting. It’s called intuitive lifting. Sergio Oliva did it, and it worked for him. If you ever watch any of his old videos or workouts, he lifted based on how he felt; not counting reps or sets, or even looking at the weight. Also, his form was awful. But he got the work done and moved the muscle.
I am jealous about guys with big arms and delts genetics. I am a guy with well developed chest ,legs and traps. You look better in life with any clothes.
Most people don’t need to run a split with 5 days between muscle groups (like you said advanced enhanced lifters end up needing more recovery time) combining the chest and back day for a legs/ torso/arms split or doing arms on chest and back like a ppl fixes the program for most people. Sam needs this split because his arm volume is almost even to his chest/back volume but that’s simply not the right ratio for most lifters imo, if Sam is 1/1 most lifters should be about 2/1.
His beyond failure with heavy weights + no rest days is a recipe for injuries... and that s what is happening to him. His BB journey will come in to an end soon. Unfortunately.
