Using James Horner's Oscar nominated score, you'll learn the difference between a "hit" and a "shift" when scoring a scene, and how modulating to different keys and modes can have a significant impact on how your music helps tell the story.

I know I'm late but I soooooo would love to see a video of you breaking down how you'd approach a scene.
Same here!
Great stuff Ryan. I have been exploring the different ways you can modulate, from direct, pivot chords, common notes, using secondary dominant or a 2-5-1 (almost certainly many others I don't know) so I really loved watching this example. Would always be happy to have more on this, as well as how scoring a scene.
Do you have a video on cadences? I know a bit about PAC, IAC, HC, PC, but I haven't yet someone explain using these in film scores (in fact I have watch more than a few that argue against using them in scores) over using chromatic mediants.
I don't have one on cadences yet but I should definitely get on it!
I would say when scoring a scene you want to be careful about ending with a perfect authentic cadence unless the story is over, because you don't want to make it seem prematurely finished. But I would never recommend having no cadences throughout the cue.
You're a super hero Ryan
Your videos are just what I need , thank you
This is a very interesting topic.
I have become a fan of your videos, you are amazing.
Wow, thank you!
I'd enjoy a video on how you plan scoring a scene.
Thanks I will see what I can come up with!
Greatt Video! James horner such a underrated composer imo ....Just curious what's your take on hans Zimmer's compositions.... Because we all know that Zimmer tend to focus more on sounds, production and expressing feelings rather thn flexing melody skills..
Zimmer's a master at what he does, which I think you summed up pretty well. People think it's easy but a bad Zimmer knockoff feels pretty lifeless, he puts in a lot more work than most people realize to pull his style off well.
Nice haircut Ryan! And video 😉
Ha, thanks Chris!
I always wondered how that film convinces its audience - it's not Mel Gibson's accent, that's for sure 😄
Hey ryan, I love your channel. I am very new to composing (only have written 1 pop tune with 3 instruments) , and I'm trying to build an undergraduate music composition portfolio. I know a bit of music theory (diatonic chords, basic functional harmony - not much else beyond that), but I'm not really sure where to start in terms of applying all of that. Could you make a video for absolute beginners, sharing tips for where/how to start composing? I'm very passionate about wanting to learn music composition but theres just so much I feel like I don't know.
Great question, and that feeling of there being too much to learn or study never really goes away I'm afraid! But that's part of what attracts people to composition I think. Number one piece of advice is to just write. Your stuff will be bad at first and that's great, just keep going. I'll think about what a Composing for Beginners video might be like.
This is nitpicky and not that important, but changing modes Dmaj-Dm-Dmaj is technically not a modulation .`/ see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modulation_(music)
Yea you are right, it’s a change of mode but I guess not a “modulation” since the tonic stays put.
I’ll retitle it!
So the halfhearted soldiers hear the musical score and the modulations as William Wallace is encouraging them. The history books should be rewritten to include t his important information.
The sinking of the titanic wasn’t the only moment in history in which the musicians inspired the people
