Hi. I have been a medically licensed Physician Assistant for twenty years and currently work as a Hospitalist PA in Washington, D.C. where I live with my wife and four children. I finished PA school at 33, worked for several years and then, completed a Doctorate of Health Education from A.T. Still University in 2012 at 42. There is a guy who finished medical school in his late 40s and a lady who just started at 54!
you're not "old" , dr.soles nor you, dr. omar. i would have liked to have done medicine tm(through more on a research basis, than say, e.r.) , however depression has taken much away from me, and still does, i fight continuously. but over the years i have absorbed knowledgeable of various things, such as pharmaceuticals, or what a gsc is, the purpose of a sternum rub, why aspirin should ideally not be given to someone with mallory-weisz syndrome, observing an rsi - not something i'd attempt unless under strict supervision- i get depressed ,not insanely harbouring grandiose delusions. anyway, this is just to say *thank you* , for your insightful video, and respect to you.
@@OmarAbdulMalikDHEdMPASPACPAPro thank you, i have tried many things from when i was first dx'd at aged 5 (my mother died.), but the usual ssri's made me feel totally blank. so i have been trying glutamate antagonists, high doses of magnesium, and hoping that the johnson and johnson medication, "spravato"/esketamine is soon legalised here (ireland), in the meantime, i have been taking small monthly doses of ketamine, which seem to be working somewhat on the depression and ocd. all i'd like is a chance to live each day free from the depression. anyway, thank you for your positive comment, and for the initial one, that gives me some hope!

I didn't realize how horribly debilitating depression can be until I started seeing patients with it.😖 It's so easy for people to say, "OH just cheer up!"😄, if they have never had it or, seen someone with it. There are even somatic issues associated with depression (body aches, nausea, headaches, etc.😣). Do you get these as well?
Oh MAN! You may want to look at becoming a PA! It's great for military folks. I think about 1/5 of my erstwhile classmates were from the military!😃👋🏾👨🏾⚕️
I can relate. After working a stable federal govt job for some years. Decided to make a change. I started dental school at 31, graduated at 35. Best decision I made! Really enjoy your vids doc!
Medicine has one of the HIGHEST profession satisfaction rates. Maybe even the highest. So I don't see why age would matter if you're capable and willing. I know doctors who are still practicing in their 80s, my own father is an MD and didn't retire until his late 70s. He now says he's bored and misses working lol. Even after 50+ of practicing.
This video has really inspired me for my own future. Really brings a different perspective to how i anticipated med school to be like and what kind of people i will hopefully meet there.

im 33 going to be 34 been in the food industry for 15 years been a chef for going on 6 years and im going to be going to culinary school to get my legit Chef Degree......your never to old to learn.......Kind of reminds me of the movie Patch Adams which I know is a terrible analogy cuz patch hated that movie but he was old as hell when he went to Med School

Just found your channel and I can say that it is heavily underrated. I come from the sneaker spectrum of things but I love your videos on your profession. I fell in love with medicine ever since I hit my 20's and always ended up finding myself in a hospital or doctor's office (lol). I'm 25 now and I went to uni for computer science but there is always that sliver of thought in my mind wishing I chose the medicine route. It must be super fulfilling knowing that you get to change someone's life for the better. Just curious, as a GI doctor, is there a certain diet that you follow? As in, are you more cautious about what you consume and put into your digestive tracts lmao. Also, do you consume alcohol? Cheers x
Bro i went to radiology college and wanted medical school but i questioned my abilities so I avoided it now I graduated and regretting it so should I complete masters like my family pushing me they dont advise me to take the another route to med school
Hey, I'm 20 recently stuying a career I don't like and next year I will repeat my national uni exam to joing med school. We are know it's not easy to get in, some people take 5 years or more trying. So 3 years late is not like the world will end, and sometimes I think same like you but actually thats a lot of difference because we are young but in the future, when someone ask you about your age and your position in a hospital, won't be any difference between saying "Im a specialist 33 years old" and "I'm a specialist 36 years old". Sorry for my english, I need to improve it

I'm 40 and not trying to work longer then another 5 years or so. Trying to taper off work as much as possible as I get older. I couldn't imagine any kind of school right now especially med school. Faaaaaaack that. I could see being jealous in a way but trust me I wouldn't be that jealous. I'd keep the smile and be happy your where your at
@@DoctorSoles11 exactly. You know I worked for a lot of doctors in my time. Had the connect with the hospitals as my my mom, dad, aunts and uncles all worked in one. This one stuck out and I will never forget him. I was a painter and would paint his place once a year so it was "clean". The man owned nothing at all. I mean a bed and couch yes but picture that's it. Few clothes in the closet. All he wanted to do was help people because people helped him and his family when they needed when he was young. He didn't say it but from what he told me I think he spent a lot of money on others. That's what he was all about. That was his drive. He was so easy going always saying "it's okay" "no problem" "I'm simple". Happy as could be. Really that's all that counts right? Whats life if your not happy. We all find it in different places.
