Exploring Old Discord (2016-2017)!

- Discord back in 2016/2017 was a riot. You had beautiful login pages, wonderful UI look and feel, and most importantly the inability to mix text and voice channels. Discord has gone a long way and it's extremely interesting to look back in time and see what Discord once was. Come along for the ride as I crack jokes and struggle to use the old Discord interface.

Heyo folks! Believe it or not there is a way to bring back the Old UI look using BetterDiscord themes. I have a RUclips shart that you can check out here: ruclips.net/user/shortsRGtb2B5plXQ?feature=share

reply function in the discord is actually is one of the new features the discord had from that time.
at first, there was no way to reply directly to message, then the "quote" function was added (using >) and then the reply function was added to the discord.
yea reply is super new im shocked he didnt know that, it was added around 2019 thats pretty recent
@@pringlecpp i think it was actually added around 2020? because i remember how i used quote function in 2020, and after that the reply function was added.

@noozed228 I agree.
I miss the quote feature, replies are good and all but quote had one piece of utility which reply doesn't and that is allowing you to copy the raw message content of someone else's message including all the formatting options like bold italics underline etc
I remember I was using message links with my friends as replies
i started using discord in early 2016. it looks almost the same at a glance, but there's a lot more useful features + the small ui changes just make it way better. it's one of those things you don't really notice until compared side by side

I joined Discord midway through 2016 and I remember _this_ Discord so vividly. It's crazy that I was only a kid in high school at the time, and now I'm in my 20's and engaged.
Scary how fast life hits you between then and now. Some people's lives *just* started in 2016, or some people went through a whole host of experiences all because of Discord. And looking back, wow do I feel old!
I really miss the old loading messages that were submitted by users. It just added that little extra bit of personality.
I also really liked the old login page. The random video game backgrounds were a bit strange, but I love the aesthetic of having a translucent login box over a brightly coloured background. The newer style just doesn't do it for me.
@@diatarachi Still disappointed that they removed those. Discord as a platform just doesn't listen to its users as closely anymore.
@@CocoTheMii That's because it's getting more and more popular and they can't just listen to every single thing their userbase has to say. However, it doesn't excuse them from letting real problems go under the radar.

I miss all the references and loading messages and even just the table flip option in moderation settings. That gave discord so much personality, and while I like all the new features they add, it just feels kinda corporate-y now because it's not targeted to just gamers anymore and doesn't have all those fun references

Fun fact: if your account is old enough when a bot checks your creation date it will just put the creation date of the bot or when the api started keeping track of join dates.
I remember when I first joined Discord in March 2017, it was so simple and laid back. Then as the years passed by it slowly grew bigger and bigger, and with that, more and more changes. Discord today is almost unrecognizable compared to the old Discord, but it remains familiar. 2017 was definitely the most nostalgic year for me on Discord. Lots of friends and memories were made.
?@@Kalvalkante
Whoaaaaaa this was a trip down memory lane. I had a friend who was a beta tester and dragged me onto discord shortly after! A few corrections:
1. Replying is actually fairly new! If someone got replying to work that either means that A) They tagged you in the message and then went back to edit your @ out (It still kept the ping-look sometimes) or some black magic mystery (differing versions maybe).
2. It actually makes complete sense to have streamer mode so early! Back in the day one of Discord's major selling points was that it was wayyyy safer than Skype for streamers.
It's wild how much has changed. I used to run a fairly popular (for it's time) server back then and knew pretty much all the ins and outs. Today it's so much more complicated lol
3:48 the reply feature is new.
respects to NTTS for going back to the past and showing us how old Discord looked like
yeah, also a big thank you for the music from the upstairs neighbor slaying it on the piano
He probably used a custom server sort of setup with an older client.
@@user-wj5tm3dv2s I got the joke, it's just that a lot of people are saying it and it's getting old, so I intentionally ruined it :)
As a person who started using discord in 2016, this is a trip down memory lane. It was also funny when you realized there wasn't a reply feature lol.
@burgerstupr no u don't
Oh my gosh, this is straight nostalgia right here. I still feel the struggle when connecting to calls since Discord only had few servers for calls.
I signed up for Discord back in mid 2017 to join a RUclipsr's Minecraft Discord and looking at the old ui it's more organized compared to modern day Discord imo
Was it mumbo jumbo?

Completely forgot they changed discord logo and got more flatter. Remember people hated on it. Also looking back discord has changed so much and slowly I didnt notice
I can cope with that but them using that horrendous font on their website is eyesore
i remember pre-nitro times when you were able to use emojis from different servers...
@@ACoTam2Only "gamewisp" servers allowed emojis to be used on other servers
I started using Discord in 2016. So I definitely remember it looking like this. What a pleasure.
Btw as someone who uses an older version of the discord app. You can’t reply to people but since they use a newer discord client they obviously can and that’s why it shows up as a ping. Also it’s funny that on older discord versions when someone has a status set it shows up as “Playing Custom Status” instead of whatever they set as their status
This gives me so much nostalgia, My early years of high school were spent on discord on weekends playing LoL or Minecraft. It was such a refresher from skype which at that time was getting horrible updates.
This was a blast to the past, especially the old login page and the sign-in messages. Additionally, the old Discord logo was leagues better than the current one, in my subjective opinion. Great video!
how?
@@scribblecloudThe font was consistent with the original icon, whereas now it's just bubbly and weird.
Dang, a blast from the past. I remember the login messages and stuff that made Discord unique and fun to use. Switching from Skype at the time, it was a rather magical experience. Now it’s just boring loading screen hints for the login/loading and endless popups about school/community/whatever servers (shut up, I don’t want to join my classmates, if I close the dialog once then it shouldn’t come up again!)
This brought back memories, I started using discord in 2016 when it looked like this and it was a wild time.
Thanks for the nostaigla, I made many friends using discord, I joined on Dec 31, 2016. Discord has changed so much in the 5 years I've been using discord.
Thank you for giving me a video i can use whenever someone asks me "How did Discord look like when you started using it?"
0:08 is what I miss the most. All the amazing game art at the login.

It's interesting to look back at the things you remember being different and the differences you don't remember so well. I started using Discord in early December of 2016.
I've actually used Discord in 2016. It's honestly a fever dream how different it is.
Whoa. I joined Discord in 2017 for a reason I can't even remember, but stopped being active there in 2020 to shift focus over to loads of personal projects I've been working on, so I forgot how much they evolved.
oh my goddd yessss thank you, ive forgotten just how different it is from when i started using it and attempts to look at how it looked back then always felt unsuccessful, it felt like nobody archived old discord

I started using discord at the Over watch launch. I knew it had changed but not by this much. I honestly can't even say I'm nostalgic. Interesting video though!
Love what Discord's login page and chat used to be
crazy that you've never used the quick switcher! it's one of the things I use most in Discord
The old UI is really nostalgic for me
bro this brings me back
As someone who started using Discord around the start of 2016, old discord is a mixed bag compared to current discord. Part of me did like the silly gamer messages they had when you booted up the program but I remember back then tons of people didn't really like it. Before they had community messages they would show you pretty old gamer memes like "do a barrel roll!" and the like. I miss the more casual tone of the discord has a whole.
I certainly don't miss the segregated text and voice channels. Even back then I absolutely hated that. For everything that discord got wrong or something I didn't agree with, they have added like 2 or 3 features that I don't think I could live without anymore. I miss old discord but it's certainly gotten MUCH better over time. Though it's really funny to look back and think "THIS was enough for me to drop skype and never look back"
3:26 the reply function was added later on in like 2019 or something hence it doesnt show u that option anywhere but yet it pings you.
replying used to be that quote thing
Bro I miss when they would have fan submitted quotes while loading. It made discord feel more like an interwoven and connected community.
Man this brings back memories
i joined discord in around august 2020, (i know i know, later than most people here lol) and i always remember how it was then compared to now with all of these changes. it's hard to believe that some people never got to see this version of discord because it's what i remember. the first time i noticed all of the new features i had to take a second and reminisce, now we have banners, they got rid of the tags, and the bio and notes you can add to your profile, you can change the colours of your profile, all of this is so much different than what i remember and as much as i love it, i miss what discord used to be. to most there's no difference because this is all THEY'VE known, but side by side, virtually everything has changed.
You couldn't reply back then. You just had to tag em. They later added the quote feature which was similar to reply but still flawed cuz it copied the message you're replying to and then added ur reply in the bottom with the ">" formatting thing which meant it tagged the role or person the person tagged again. Reply is a rlly new feature.
I remember that, people used to be so mad saying "WHY DID YOU PING ME?!"
wasn't reply added like... last year?
Fun Fact: CTRL + K still exists to this day and I still haven't really used it.
For what should be a plain and boring features showcase, this is surprisingly enjoyable and unhinged ; I love it
I wasn't even on discord in 2016-17 yet this is oddly nostalgic
Funny that replying to messages and making folders for servers only released less than a year ago, same with _threads… ugh._
Though i’m quite surprised to see the old quoting system still doesn’t exist.
on a edited version of the discord mobile app called bluecord the quote system still exists there its just a bit different
3:27 before Discord had replies, they had quotes. Basically would copy their message and ping them
This brings back memories and nostalgia
This takes me back man

I remember making my Discord account on March 29th, 2017, that way I could talk to a friend whilst we had late night gaming sessions. Then on March 30th, 2017 - Quick Switcher came out. I had only been on the platform for a day, and suddenly this (what I thought to be) revolutionary feature came out. That's one of the reasons I stuck with Discord, I saw that and I figured there would be greater things to come... and greater things sure did come.
This brings me back to when I switched to Discord and left Skype.
7:40 I always use Quick switcher.
Oh god, the memories. This is around when I joined Discord.
I prefer the functionality of modern Discord, especially the new slash commands (I'm a bot developer), but Discord has always had pretty great UI (because it was basically stolen from Slack, which had already perfected it).
Discord pushed slash commands *wayyy too hard* imo. They’ve got that stupid popup whenever you type something that even remotely looks like a prefix, like ! or . (“yOuR fAvOrItE bOtS aRe EvOlViNg” shut up, I know, you told me like 500 times already)
@@SKCro. facts. i miss the simpler times where you had to guess prefixes and all that lmao. but slash commands are quite useful once you get to know them.
I signed up for discord at late 2017 to return to a Club Penguin Army called the Rebel Penguin Federation since they shifted from xat into Discord. This video really brings the nostalgia and It reminds me of funny adventures I had with old friends
