I was only 9 years old when I heard this song and it changed the way I looked not only on myself alone but also on my fellow Zimbabweans ,particularly the black folks.I started respecting myself and all my black brothers ,and understood that ,only ourselves can truly and only imancipate ourselves truly. And we have to tell God that we need the emancipation in our time and for our future kids
I knew this song before I knew that Thomas Mapfumo existed! In the early 1980s when I was a small boy my father had this yellow labeled record single which he played quite often. I have memories of me as a young boy singing along to this tune. I thought nothing of this boyhood memory until maybe 25 years or so when I started to like and know Mkanya's music and was listening to this song when I suddenly had a flash of this memory of father listening to this record and humming along! I realised then and with delight that my father was a Mkanya fan! He is long gone now but it gives me great pleasure when listening to Mapfumo to know that I could be sitting with my father and we'd probably be listening to Tozvireva Kupi. On repeat!
