It’s MiSTer FPGA NEWS AND UPDATES time! N64 FPGA core news, MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core news, MiSTer FPGA arcade game news…and more! FPGA gaming and retro games all in one! with more Taki Udon MiSTer FPGA clone review and build! MiSTer FPGA alternatives are here! a Terasic DE-10 Nano clone for all (or Terasic DE10 Nano clone if you hate hyphens)
But today its all about new MiSTer FPGA cores for retro gaming consoles as a Philips CD-i core is here! And it plays Link: The Faces of Evil, Hotel Mario, Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon and more! It's definitely some of the rarest retro gaming hardware out there and there is now a WIP build thanks to Slamy...so let's test it! The same way we did the MiSTer FPGA N64 core and the MiSTer FPGA Saturn core when it first started development!

Finally FPGA owners can listen to Eugene Levy yelling 'STROKE LIMIT!'
I wonder what Eugene Levy’s stroke limit really is
@@VideoGameEsoterica Unpleasant image.
Hahaha
The cool thing about CD-i is that, it didn’t just run games, it was also a media player, with its own proprietary format of disc. Which means, if you want to do 90s karaoke, watch 90s movies, or use your mister as an audio player, the cdi core can make that possible
This is true. A multipurpose platform that just happened to have games
CD-i can't believe this is happening!
Nobody expected it
@@VideoGameEsoterica Praise be! Compton's Interactive Encyclopedia here I come!
@Tense the most interactive encyclopedia in gaming!
It is kind of crazy we get CD-i before the vastly superior 3DO. Virtual Boy is also superior.
Just what the devs are interested in. All the cores are basically passion projects
Yooooo! This is amazing! CD-I, Jaguar, and 3DO... let's goooo
Don’t forget PC-FX
@@VideoGameEsotericaAnd Nintendo Virtual Boy and NEC PC-98.
Pc-98 exists. Just very unfinished
So does Jaguar.
@7Lukasz7 virtual boy runs flawlessly on the 3ds. Best way to play
I've been waiting for the core! No joke my friend had a CDi and I loved it back then.
Well it’s here!
I knew preconverting cdi games to CHD wasn't a waste of time.
Haha the work paid off. It’s happening
RUclips poops in my MiSTer? It's more likely than I think!
lol what??
@@VideoGameEsoterica The CD-I zelda games are well known for being used in RUclips poops
Def get dragged a lot
@@VideoGameEsotericaRUclips Poop (or YTP for short) is a Dada-esque artform in which existing videos are edited to the point of absurdity for comedic effect. The cutscenes from Hotel Mario and the first two CD-i Zelda games were particularly common sources early on, to the point where many people primarily associate those versions of the characters with it. Many people, such as myself, saw those cutscenes in edited form via YTP before we ever saw the genuine article, lol
Haha ahh missed that
As far as other systems I'd like to see on the MiSTer... Pretty much anything we don't already have. The Virtual Boy, the Tandy ViS (interactive CD), the Commodore CDTV (CD), Amiga 32..
Speaking of the CD-i, has any Video CD or Photo-CD system been ported to the MiSTer as of yet? It might be kind of neat to dump all of the official VCD movies and concerts to watch on FPGA systems. I also have my old photos from the early 90's on gold Kodak Photo CDs, which I luckily made isos of before two of them stopped reading! -Matt
Still so many cores we could have and hopefully happen
Didn't know about this but great to see more cores coming to MiSTer and a preservation of loved hardware is happening! Thanks! :)
It’s so new barely anyone knew it was coming
YO! CD-i core!? damn it feels good to be a gamer!
A fun development for sure
NGL I actually like the Animations in the Mario and Zelda CD-i games. They have a certain charm to them. They're gawdily over-animated like a lot of Russian or Slavic Animation.
They def have a unique style and you don’t forget them
have you seen the old Soviet adaptation of Treasure Island?
Maybe we can finally get a turbo CD-I core so we can play that version of Micro Machines at a higher FPS
Haha you never know
What a time to be alive!
Didn’t expect to see CD-i on MiSTer in 2024
My experience with the CD-I was playing this weird and futuristic CD-based console at Media Play in the Midwest in the 90s. We were a Nintendo family, so it was never in the cards, but I remember being fascinated by this unusual system running these strange-feeling, but amazing-looking games from a company I associated with televisions and CD players.
It does have that bizarro world vibe to it
Yes! I would go to Media Play and see this and the 3DO and wonder what it was all about. It cost a fortune and I wondered what the fuss was about. I'm glad I never saved my money to buy one, though I did get burned on the original SegaCD.
I saw some Zelda CD-i games at my local retro pawn shop. The had/have Zelda's Adventure for only $1,000! What a deal!
Haha weird place to see them for sale
Hopefully they are able to include DVC support so we can play the games which software emulators can’t!
Yes that would def be a needed feature
The day we can get "Link mah boy! Ahahahahahah!" out of this will be a wondrous and strange day.
Haha soon i bet
definitely want to explore this library one day. these games looked more interesting than I was lead to believe
There’s some fun to be had. It’s not a perfect platform but it has its charms
I might as well delete every core on my Mister. CD-i is all I really need.
The best system ever named CD-I
Wow what a year for MiSTer
And we still have three months to go
@@VideoGameEsoterica It just keeps getting better and better, it's a shame that Dreamcast and GameCube are likely to much for the hardware, although at least those have plenty of accessible options for those that want to play.
Ooh def too much. GameCube would need a massive FPGA and a team of people. Plus that era of console seems no real benefit from FPGA over emulation
As someone that watched MiSTer from the sidelines until Taki Udon got it to us cheaper, I'm actually getting back into keeping up with MiSTer news now that it's in my hands! I've been having a blast with mine and I can't wait to see what else comes to it! Even if systems like CDi isn't for me, I'm still happy to see it possibly being preserved on this platform!
Jag and 3DO next baby! Here we go, the three turds of the consolepocalypse!
Nah they all have some reason to love them
I can already smell The Flowers of Robert Mapplethorpe
The real reason to own the hardware
With more and more CD-Based consoles being added, it makes me wonder if anyone would ever make a core for something like LazerActive. It would be kinda neat in general to have a laserdisc core based on a specific model and even test some films on it. I wonder if the future of platforms like this, is that maybe they aren't just focused on games, but entertainment media in general.
I mean who wouldn't want a Nuon core with full DVD playback?
It would be in the realm of feasible but who’s gonna do it? That’s as big of an obstruction as anything
@VideoGameEsoterica Sure I get it. Just kicking around ideas hoping someone smarter than me thinks the same way.
Haha no I get it
It's a crime to play CD-i Tetris without music.
I’m sure sound will come soon
I'd like to see Burn Cycle up and running. I have the game, but I don't have the system, so I've never played it. But the playthroughs on RUclips make it look fun.
There is also a PC version that works on DOS and MACs from the early 90s. Which can be emulated. Not sure if AO86 has enough power to run it.
It’s one of the better games for sure
I would've never expected for the CD-I of all things to have a Golgo 13 game.
I know right?
Amazing. Praying 3DO is next
We can only hope
I’ve had a CD-i with Tetris, Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, and Link: Faces of Evil for about two and a half decades but still never played Hotel Mario or Zelda’s Adventure. Can’t wait for this core!
Test it out. Fun to play even if it’s clearly not finished
The music in Hotel Mario is fantastic.
It’s def catchy
Nintendo so much wishes these games were never made and just pretend they never existed. But it is great to see this playable now on Mister, even if still in the early stages. CD-i emulation in software isn't especially terrific either so any progress and new info gained will help out the community (assuming it will be shared like it should be). And some of these are not really fun, but important to be preserved - talking about Mario and Zelda games here after all.
I’m sure it will be shared. The code is already on github
Before it went to storage I had a bog standard 220 model that I got something like 20 years ago now. I remember spending more to get the motion video card for it, but I'm glad I did because the price sure as hell hasn't gone down lol. I've played all the usual stuff between the different controllers I could get, but the one thing I remember tinkering with the most was the Video CD toolkit: I thought it was pretty cool that they made a system that allowed you to have DVD-like menus on your Video CDs when using the CD-i...No surprise it wasn't exactly a feature that caught on, given the cost of the configuration...I also found out when using that hardware that a Video CD was generally supposed to have a small CD-i application on it to handle video playback, but Video CDs made using modern tools generally botched that, resulting in Video CDs that cannot play on CD-i, despite supporting the format with the add-on lol
Yes the hardware has def kept its value well
I'm also interested in the non game aspects of a CD-i core.
I own a number of CD-i machines and let's just say, they are not the most robust hardware. Nearly all CD-i systems depend on a timekeeper chip to store game settings. The chip has a built in battery which after 30 year has often gone flat, causing problems with saving, and even some games crashing. Another problem area are the drive mechanisms. For both problem areas there are solutions, but even so having an alternative way to play these game is great news. Incidentally, the CD-i system supports a light gun (or rather a wii-mote like solution that doesn't require a CRT), and it actually has a few light gun games that are worth playing.
Like so many arcade machines. So annoying
Amazing Does this core support the digital video cartridge required games or have the ability to play the VCD titles. Long awaited addition to the Mister core library :) big thank you to core developer for this console preservation.
It doesn’t yet. Hopefully in the future
CD-I and playable in the same sentence... so strange :D
Nobody saw it coming
Very exciting stuff. So much wonderful jank to be discovered.
3DO is probably the core I currently want the most. And I’d really like to see the PC98 core get to the finish line.
I’d love to see PC-98 finished too
WHOOO, I look forward to being able to play Lazer Lords.
That’s one I don’t know if I’ve ever played
I'll be over the moon if we get a GP32 core. Those games need to be preserved for Gaming History.
Too advanced for MiSTer sadly
Hotel Mario being one of the better games 😬
hotel mario here we come
Def one worth playing
It be awesome if we’d get the CDi on the Pocket
I wonder if it would port. Would have to look into it
Hahaha, I called it on your CD32 Video. 😂 And here it is.
Haha no surprise I’d do one
I'm actually pretty stoked with this. I'll wait for the final core though. I have never played a CD-i and I had everything as a kid (not rich parents, I left school at 15 and earnt money, lol). I never did get a CD-i but I did have to suffer the 3DO, Jag w/CD and CD32... One of those systems I loved. I'll let you guess which. LOL
Yahel from Wrestling with Gaming is gonna be real happy too - he's a huge CD-i fan.
Haha I already talked to him on Twitter about it
This is a win for preservation for sure. 🎉
Absolutely. They aren’t making any more CD-i’s
if you do a part 2 what i like to see in action are
1.the apprentice
2.escape from cyber city
3.pac panic
as a bonus super mario wacky world
We shall see :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica also indeed hoping a 3do core does happen that system is amazing
@phoenixmixgaming4625 so many good games on 3DO
This is huge. Would love to get rid of my big cdi. Will keep my portable unit. This really alleviates the Phode situation.
Yes this will become the defacto CD-i
I haven’t been this exited for a core since the n64!
I just get excited for new cores. Whatever they are
@@VideoGameEsotericasame ! It’s just gonna be great being able to play the shitty Zelda games ! .. crazy how Cdi has significance to the culture and hobby because of the worse games of one of the most popular series in the world
All hardware has some reason to love it. Even CD-i
10:15 The one core I would like to see on MiSTer is the HP-85.
Not one I expected to hear today
Virtual Boy is the missing core for me. I'd love a 3DO core too though.
We need it along with 3D glasses support!
True I forgot to mention VB
@@emmettturner9452 Someone did write an NES and an SMS core with 3D support, so heck yeah.
While I would also love to see a core for preservation, I have to say that Red Viper on 3DS is basically a perfect way to play. It's been amazing to go through the library with 3D that I don't have to wear on my face!
Yes that really is the defacto Virtual Boy now
Rise of the Robots is definitely running too fast.
Yes that one was easy to tell with the cutscenes
Probably running the PAL version at 60hz
Core speed isn’t locked in yet either with loading data rates
Ready for some Chaos Control
Hopefully next update more games work
I keep hoping for a 3DO core, but of course the Zelda Memes won out.
We def need 3DO
Thunder in Paradise for all!!
I have a vid scheduled on it for January lol
My friend from school had Philips CD-i. He never asked for it, literally had no idea why his parents had bought it, they just did. It was also in 1993 I think, when it cost like $700, if I remember correctly. lol Well, they were kinda rich, so it was no big deal for them. I remember we played with it for a couple of hours, but all they had were a bunch of boring encyclopedias and "multimedia" stuff like that and the only game I remember they had was International Tennis Open, which was ok, I guess, if you're into this sort of thing. But the controller thingie was also atrocious and you couldn't play 2 player against each other, so we were bored very quickly and went on to play Sega, which he also had. We never even talked about that thing again as far as I remember.
Probably because it was marketed as an “educational game console”
@@VideoGameEsoterica I don't even think they were marketing it as a games console initially. They wanted to make a new niche for it. Something like interactive multimedia home system. Games were more of an afterthought and it shows.
@kosmosyche yes gaming came in later when it wasn’t selling
I never would have expected to be mentioned on this channel. But here it is. I feel like a pop star now. 😀
The reason for naming this version of the rbf "CDi_wandofgamelon.rbf" was mostly based on my surprise. It was one of the first games I wanted to try and for some reason it just booted. I've uploaded it instantly without hesitation to the Discord as I thought people will enjoy that feeling too. I didn't even clean up my code for uploaded it. That's what I usually do.
There are multiple visible glitches here. The flickering borders are caused by a not yet supported video mode which autoconverts NTSC resolution images to PAL resolution. And the disc spins a little bit too fast. I've made some calculations about the spinning speed wrong. The next version will fix those issues.
Haha you earned the video. Plus there’s a part 2 coming. Awesome work!
Sooo... few... games I want to play on the CD-I, fewer than on the 32X
Still fun to have
I can’t believe no one has started work on a Gizmondo core yet…
Too advanced for the chipset
Give me The 7th Guest and some nasty Zelda, love it
7th Guest is a classic
Getting a mister is so worth it now.
lol CD-I was the deal maker?
@@VideoGameEsoterica You know it.😆
jk I already have a mister, but I am glad to see this. Hopefully we get a 3DO or Jaguar core next.
3DO has to happen
yes!!!!! i have really wanted this
Good news then :)
Magnavox VIS next!
Deep cut
Technically, the Saved By The Bell intro is ‘80s, not ‘90s. ;)
Still 90s vibed
@@VideoGameEsoterica I agree it spent one year in the 80s. If anything it is a little 80s and is 90s.
Awesome to see CD-i getting a core! Never would have thought there would be enough interest for it. Actual hardware has become fairly unreliable, and usually needs some tinkering. Honestly, it's extremely unlikely, if not downright impossible, to find a fully functional stock machine. At least for the common (consumer) ones. A MiSTer core would give those interested a great way to dive into the library, which is surprisingly big. Though when it comes to actual games, perhaps less so. The problem with many platforms like this is where you draw that line though. If they can manage to get digital video functionality going, it can even outdo current emulation, as those still have issues with that. Plenty of the better games require the DV expansion and with it the machine does offer some excellent ports for FMV heavy games such as Brain Dead 13 or The Last Bounty Hunter.
Yes from a hardware standpoint alone CD-I “hardware” will live on in perpetuity outside software emulation or collectors who know how to repair it
Any guide on how to get the core set up?
Not as of yet
Good bro thx and do you think arcade core NARC will be be coming one day? 🧐🤔
Unsure 🤷🏻♂️

Can't wait to finally give those Zelda CD-i games a try... in about a year's time, once this core gets refined enough
Yes def not time yet to try and play them to actually enjoy them
@VideoGameEsoterica Yup, definitely too early for that. I'll admit I have a much more vested interest in seeing the PSX, N64 and Saturn get fully completed on the DE-10 and am more willing to occasionally dabble in some debugging here for those consoles if I see any opportunities for me to do so, whereas most of everything else is outside of those specific consoles is secondary to me at this point in time.
That being said, it's always nice to see new hardware being added to MiSTer, and I always had a passing interest in Zelda CD-i and Hotel Mario because I grew up with all the memes, so I hope that the MiSTer core will get refined enough later on so I can experience all the uncanny hilarity/terror these games have to offer in a way that's as close to authentic hardware replacement as I can get.
What we really need is PC-FX
@@VideoGameEsoterica Now THAT would be cool to see on the DE-10!
Whoever decided to do a core for the CD-i and not the 3DO is dead to me. LOL jokes, this had even less of a shot of happening, I reckon, so very cool!
Must have just been what the dev enjoys working on :)
3D0 is the real impossible core :)
@rs.matr1x it’s just too cool to be harnessed by FPGA
@@rs.matr1x Maybe if we keep saying that someone will try prove us wrong :D
The 3DO is much more complex and would be too harsh for a first core to do. The CD-i is a better stepping stone to get into the MiSTer. And even that machine is more complex than the usual 8 bit one.
3DO would be fantastic! I want to play Crash n' Burn again.
Don’t forget Killing Time’

Zero points but you get recognition :)
@@VideoGameEsoterica LOL!
This is great considering how breakable and unreliable the CD-I tends to be.
I haven’t heard much good in regards to long term reliability
I ported Rise of the Robots to CD-i :( I worked at Philips for a while, did some code on 7th Guest and a few other things then got head hunted by Mirage. Wish I hadn't moved 😂 I got the same spiel as the magazines, best game ever, amazing company, all the latest tech etc. I startded right at the end of development so was too late to help them make it good. I was writing a CD-i emulator at one point (CD-ice) but never released it as I needed documentation I couldn't get hold of. It did play Rise but the other emus, including MAME, don't get any further than this core by the looks of it. I've been thinking about doing a new game for the system, maybe now is the time with a core in progress it might actually have an audience.
Def would have the largest audience CD-I has ever had that’s for sure!
