I love how the new cat (whose name I’ve forgotten) seems to have imprinted on Merphy. Like, he literally walked up and was like, “You. Yes you’ll do nicely. You’re my human now. I will follow you everywhere.”😂
My main reading goal for this year is prioritize the physical books I own... and not buy more after I finish at least 5 🤣 I suspect that the "not buy more" part is going to be the most difficult
my goal is to read mostly books from my physical tbr and I put myself on a book buying ban for the whole of 2024... I own way to many books its seriously a problem...I need a new shelf and I already have three and a half...
My only goal thus far is to get through all (or at least most) of the 14 books on my TBR shelf (December holidays + a number of second-hand bookstores is a bad combo for me💀) before May, because then two of my favourite authors are releasing new books that I’m so excited to read!
I started making notes and writing down my thoughts on books in a notebook and I have found it makes such a difference when I try to talk about the books weeks or months later! I don't know why I wasn't doing this in the first place, although I suppose I did used to post on my book blog and reviewed books almost immediately, but I let that slip over the years. I would like to post more dedicated reviews this year do the notes will be super helpful! Good luck with your goals and collecting your badges! 😊
Same! I told myself that note taking would pull me out of the story and make the experience feel less like fun and more like work - but actually it helps me engage with the story better!
@@merphynapierreviewsyou can also take notes in StoryGraph if you feel doing it in a physical notebook is a bit taxing! They have a private reading journal option and you can write down your thoughts at any specific point in the books.
Thank you for all of the videos and fun over the years! Because of you and Daniel Greene, I finally started a channel too just to try and have some book fun!
As someone else who makes plans but has trouble organizing the follow through: keeping a goals journal helps a ton. Write about your day, but also use that time to check in on your goals, mention things you did to work towards them, remind yourself of them if you didn't do anything to work towards them that day. And try not to judge yourself too harshly. I still have days where I just read, play video games and eat...and that's fine. It's just that at the end of the day I sit down and say "yeah, today I didn't do much, here's some things I should work on tomorrow." It's not a judgement exercise. Obviously your baseline level of not accomplishing much is not that low - I'm using this tool to fight a degree of depression (just how much is undiagnosed because mental healthcare is expensive because it doesn't count as healthcare according to the laws that make Canadian healthcare be government funded), whereas you have a family and two successful youtube channels and so on. Is it a 100% perfect tool? No. (at least not for me) I have a couple of fairly simple milestones that I set as projects at the start of last year that still aren't done...but it's a HUGE improvement over where i was.
This might be exactly what I need to do to help remind myself to clean. If I’m writing it in a journal then it might help keep that information in my brain more
Hey Merphy, I was wondering if you were planning on watching the Percy Jackson adaptation and/or talking about it on the channel? Or if you were ever planning on reading the following series Heroes of Olympus. I personally enjoy this series more than the original as its a little more "grown-up" and not as formulaic. I don't think I've ever really commented, but have been watching both channels for awhile. Keep up the good work! Good luck on your 2024 goals!
I just got back into reading and read 16 books last year, so I'd like to bump that number up to at least 24, 2 per month. I also need to prioritize reading the books I already have, I may have bought more than I really should have last year, there's just to many things I'm excited to read! I'm not going to say I can't buy any new books this year, but I am trying to put the limit that I cannot buy more than I read.
I guess my only goal is to read more books this year. For the last 4 years it has been 40 books, which has been pretty easy to me, I didn't want to pressure myself to read more. But I read 47-57 books a year, never hit 60 so far. And I have so many books and series I want to finally get to, so.... I'm pushing myself this year, even if it contradicts my usual belief. 😅
I don’t have many reading goals but I want to finish at least 2 or 3 mangas. I got vegabound, dragon ball and hopefully demon slayer. I feel like I start soo many manga but then I start reading and I just get so busy an I forget to read. Hopefully this year I can focus and read more since I love reading.
I've been reading fan fiction so much and for so long that I really want to get back into reading regular books again. I plan to at least one book a month for this year. And I plan to start writing more. I have a fantasy novel I've been picking away at for years, I plan to do some serious writing on it, to have a first draft done by the end of the year. I'm a slow writer, so that's a big deal for me.
All the badges! Yep, I totally understand that urge! My goal for 2024 is to become a part of Booktube (still pretty new to me) by making and sharing notes about what I read. I have loved reading for decades! But I couldn't tell you how many books I read last year, what most of them were, or any character names from the ones I do remember. I usually only keep vague (mostly philosophical) thoughts I had while reading the book. And that makes me a tad sad. So, here's to book notes and an awesome 2024! Cheers!
CAT I am absolutely going to steal your written review notes idea. I really worry my review videos are too rambling and not actually valuable and useful content for my subscribers so this will help.
Love it! This is such a motivator! And motivation can be such a skittish friend. This one left behind its skittish ways and just punched me... with what I must say was a grand and abrupt violence. I too shall strive! I too shall show literate work why it was written! HUZZAH! BOOKS!!!
My goal: track what I read in Storygraph. Not even review....just track. I always feel like I need to rate or put a review, but have trouble putting things into words a lot of the time, then I never do it and forget when I read the book. Was it last year? This year? 3 years ago?! Time has lost all meaning when it comes to books/manga 😅😅😅 So just marking down what I read as a start is my goal 😅
I'm working 2 jobs so I already know it's unlikely I'll meet my reading goal this year so I want to put the focus on quality. I would like to cut the number of 3 star reads I read this year. I'm tired of feeling a book is just ok
OMG YAY READING SPRINTS!!! I love watching and participating in reading sprints! It’s a lot of fun to read books together and do a small discussion on what you’re reading with others! It’s so much fun! I will be really happy if you do at least just one LOL! These are great goals for 2024! My two reading goals for this year are a Read-it-or-Unhaul-it challenge and a book buying ban. I have 126 unread books on my shelves 🫣 So I’m going to try to read most of my books on my physical TBR. I’ll draw the book from a jar, and if I like it, I’ll finish it. If I end up not liking the book, I have permission to DNF the book and give it away. Then I’m going on a book buying ban with the exceptions that I can buy books that continue a series that I already own, and I can buy book club books. I’ll be reading those books right away, so they won’t end up sitting on my shelf unread. Here’s to a great year of reading in 2024! 🎉
The best I'm able to do for reading goals is my Goodreads Reading Challenge. It's always 100 books a year. I can't review, I can only respond to questions and critique the actual writing and say whether I liked the story or not. 🤣
I'm pretty new to booktube so I don't know about badges and sprints. It sounds fun to read with people. I know no one else who reads the books I read. Explain?
For the third award, Biggest Surprises would be better. Please don't push yourself too much since I love how you do things on your channel. Just cameos of your cats would be appreciated. The title of this video should have been Making Videos with a Cat. 😼😼😼😼
I’m excited to join your sprints! Decreasing my reading goal this year from 60 last year to 40 this year because I want to be intentional about including other hobbies/being more active/ going outside more in 2024.
i know you love the Outsiders and I think you'd really like more of S.E. Hintons books and the books of her's I reccomend you to read are Rumble Fish That Was The This is now and Tex
My goal of 2024 is to read 50 books.. Hopefully I can this year since I started strong.. Have 2 current reads at the moment And I would also like to finish the 32 books (yes, I counted) on my TBR Also, hopefully squeeze in a 2024 release, which is The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, book 5 in The Inheritance Games series

Merphy as a better reviewer? 🧐Is that a thing? So… We crucify Merph on charts. 🤓😈Well, if you say you are uncomfortable at lives… do more. 😁You are in the unique category where everyone is happy to see you and interested in your thoughts. That’s not always the case. And you are not even a musician to perform something. Your optimism always wins.
Wow K&C triggered Merphy soooo bad that she have to make a goals video and upload it on a Saturday... Sorry I have to ask does this applies to manga and manga related things such as movies and anime series??? I know the process for the manga channel is a little different so I gotta ask... And its offical that cat is surely part dog...
We don’t exist to pay financial debt. Our lashes are the silk from spider stars. Our neurons taught our hearts to lose their breath; a thing in which no tax deserves remark. Now, chose freedom instead of some career. Our fingers must remember Louis’s hair. my name is Nicholas Leonard, and this is a sonnet that I wrote.
For that third award, what do you think: Biggest Surprise or DNFs?
DNFs, because I think it could be informative on why you stopped reading a book and could be fun if its a book you want to rant about.
DNFs. Surprises can be mentioned when discussing best and worst of quarter.
Both.
DNFs!
surprise!!!
Goals of 2024: more cameos of your cats 🐈 😻
Agreed!!
"Pushing myself to be a better reviewer." This is like Superman saying, "I want to be more super."
that's so kind 😭
I love how the new cat (whose name I’ve forgotten) seems to have imprinted on Merphy. Like, he literally walked up and was like, “You. Yes you’ll do nicely. You’re my human now. I will follow you everywhere.”😂
that's exactly what happened 😂

Love what you do. Also love your new cohost. Should appear more if their schedule allows it 🤣
We need a review of Cyrus' favorite books to sit on top of!
My main reading goal for this year is prioritize the physical books I own... and not buy more after I finish at least 5 🤣 I suspect that the "not buy more" part is going to be the most difficult
This is mine too! Not buying new books is so hard! Lol
You should read dungeon crawler Carl! By Matt dininman there’s a cat in it and it’s best on audiobook!
my goal is to read mostly books from my physical tbr and I put myself on a book buying ban for the whole of 2024... I own way to many books its seriously a problem...I need a new shelf and I already have three and a half...

I want all the badges too! My main goal this year is to finish at least some of the series I have started before reading any new ones.

If I miss it, I'll catch it on the replay.

Also, hopefully squeeze in a 2024 release, which is The Grandest Game by Jennifer Lynn Barnes, book 5 in The Inheritance Games series
As much as I love a good rant, biggest surprise would be a better third award. Rave > rant!
Hope to see a return to The Discworld!
Like the idea of keeping notes for the different things you read, I think I will try doing that myself this year. Look forward to hearing your progress with the goals this year
I will admit that I don't know how people *stream* reading sprints, as I was always curious on doing one on my Twitch channel but trying to get an idea how to do one have been a bit confusing. That way I am less worried about the number of books I read and more about exploring new books!
Oh yay, I love seeing goal check-ins throughout the year! And will definitely try to catch your reading sprint (you got this!).
Have you read the Secret History Mistborn? I’d love a review on that! I read the original based on your recommendation and just finished the OG series.. Incredible! Ranking is 1, 2, 3 for me. 1 & 2 are very close. 3 is awesome too but there were a few concepts that got a little too abstract for me.

I think my one reading goal is to maintain the 40 audio books I did last year (up from 26 the prior year), but I want to include some physical or ebook ones on top of that. I'm getting more into the indie space and most of them don't have audio books yet.
Hey Merphy! I was wondering if you have any book recommendations for getting into adult books. That's probably a weird question, but allow me to elaborate. Wait, there’s BADGES for the discord activities?!!!?!?! 😱😱😍😍
My goal is to try and not fall for the BookTok hype videos. I love my tropes, like Dark Academia or Enemies to Lovers, but I am finding that the books being recommended to me are just not hitting the mark, some are good but others are "Meh" or just bad.
On a completely separate note, please can we have your cat's reading goals for this year? Are there any books they are looking forward to sitting on?
A perfect start to a video😂
Okay it that what it looks outside where you live and you still have your X-mas tree still up......
Please include more cat content in your videos ❤🥰
Your cat is so baby🥺🥺🥺
When you talk about Lynn, I really hope we are not talking about the cat or an imaginary friend. :)
I'm reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaal! 😂
😂
Which tier to you have to be in to get the badges? Also, Kitty! 🥰🐈
of Patreon? You just have to be on the discord, which you gain access to with the $5 tier
Awesome as always thanks
I love this idea... except if I put the goals out there then I'll be accountable for them :D I'm gonna keep them in my head. ;)
Biggest surprises. More positive than dnfs, and as was pointed out most surprising might include dnfs.
Cyrus woke up and chose violence this day.
Are you planning to stitch this video with one at the end of the year in which you check off the goals?
I want to get over my crippling loneliness/laziness
Is that what we are doing?
Suprises
Can you restart the Dear authors series this year? 🥺
🧡📚🧡📚🧡📚🧡

Biggest surprise. That could even include dnfs if you were surprised you dnf'd something.
Biggest surprise > DNF
Agreed, surprises are more interesting to me.
Lynn hype
Surprise could include DNF. Nothing says it has to be a good one!

DNFs
We don’t exist to pay financial debt.
Our lashes are the silk from spider stars.
Our neurons taught our hearts to lose their breath;
a thing in which no tax deserves remark.
If only Anne beheaded Henry first,
she might’ve known his castle was her own.
The servants of a haunted mansion Earth
realize they’re cotton-candy-cobweb souls.
It was you lifting Louis’s severed head.
It is you that deserves to live for free;
you blink the way a butterfly descends-
-the slaves can finally pursue their dreams.
Now, chose freedom instead of some career.
Our fingers must remember Louis’s hair.
my name is Nicholas Leonard, and this is a sonnet that I wrote.
