    Glad I came across your channel. I am a 2nd-year beekeeper in Missouri. Here is my thought about feeding the bees. If you were raising cattle instead of bees, would you feed those cattle some bales of hay if their usual grazing land was absent for some reason - drought, covered in snow, etc? You're trying to raise a LOT of bees, so why handicap them if their natural resources are in a dearth? Give them a little 1:1 sugar syrup with some Honey-B-Healthy Super Plus if there are no nectar sources blooming. It just seems like good insurance for your investment, especially at the end of the season. You can't collect honey from the frames where they've stored the sugar syrup, but you're not going to feed them anyway if a super is on. Just my two cents.
    Really love your approach with the bees and your honesty about your experience and process.

    If the bees are starving, it's a no brainer, need to feed. If you do not feed when needed, then the hive will die out. Like you said, you are the beekeeper and responsible. You have come a long way from last year with your knowledge. Keep up the good work.

    Hello :) I found your channel two days ago, and I can't stop watching beekeeping videos :) I watched your beginnings, your ups and downs and I'm proud what progress have you made :) Maybe it's funny, because I only got to the videos from September 2017 and I don't know anything about beekeeping, but you can explain some issues a lot better than most of beekeepers on RUclips :) Lots of hugs for your family and best wishes from Poland :)

    J Hook tool is the only one I use. I have that small hive tool too but don't think I've ever used it tbh. It's always good to have a few hive tools in case you misplace one or two. ;)

    Hi Blake, I was watching a beekeeper here in Oz and before he slid the frame closed to put smoke down the top of the frame. When I asked why he said it pushes the bees off the top of the frame down to the bottom, preventing them getting squashed or killed. I thought of you as you always seem to pay particular attention to that point and i don’t know if you knew or had heard of that being done.
    Miss your live heaps but hope it’s helping you and the family. I hope Luke is improving. Take care. Thanks from Australia 🐨🐨🦘🦘

    How many frames of honey will get them through the winter? How often do you harvest honey?

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  4 года назад

      I normally only harvest once a year, but some years I might be able to harvest twice. What I notice is that they don't actually eat a lot of the honey that is left in the hive over the Winter. I wonder if leaving it there is also good for helping them to insulate and regulate temperatures?

  • @Haffy1952
    @Haffy1952 4 года назад

    Fix that divider board, and I agree about using sugar water but what do I know I only know what i read and don't keep bees so am just a wanna bee beekeeper but that is what I believe.

    • @Beesgatheringthyme
      @Beesgatheringthyme 4 года назад

      I have long hives also. Yard sticks work well for that space above divider board. Just cut for length. I also got half height bricks I place a few on top of cover boards in side top. Mine have fill also vent holes too.

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  4 года назад

      What are the bricks for?

    • @Beesgatheringthyme
      @Beesgatheringthyme 4 года назад

      I put the brick to hold cover boards down when I lift lid and to Mark where divider board is. I also put screen in bottom so the weight on divider helps hold down to screen

    Question? I am Northeast of San Antonio, like close to Randolph AFB. I can not get a any good Queens mated here because they all get Africanized. How do your Queens not turn out Bad!!

    • @daddykirbs
      @daddykirbs  4 года назад

      Sometimes my bees get hot, but never "killer bee" status. I'm not doing anything special here to prevent it. If your bees are unbearable, then buying new queens with known passive genetics may be the key.
