Fascinated by the carillon.. but haven't found much information on the learning aspect. How does one go about learning to play without letting the entire city hear your potential mistakes on the tower bells?

+Scotty Stripes, straight from Geert D'hollander...
Well, we have a practice keyboard in the tower.
It's the same kind of setup as the real thing, but instead of connections going to the bells, there is a build-in xylophone.
So we study at an exact same kind of keyboard, but inside little hammers knock at the tone bars of the xylophone.
It's light and we can practice for hours without disturbing people.
Once we THINK we know the new piece, we try it out on "the real thing".
The advantage here at Bok Tower Gardens is that we're surrounded by citrus groves, so after 6 pm, when the park closes, the carillon is ours!

Bok Tower Gardens Aah great info! Thanks so much for sharing!! I figured there had to be some way to practice in relative private but couldn't think of a discreet way to do it. Xylophone is perfect! Very very interesting.

So how far does the real carillon music carry then? Aren't there residents still fairly close by? Thanks so much for the reply to Scotty's question. I've been to Bok Tower three times in the many years I've lived in FL. I just love the place and the artistic beauty of the tower's architecture and gardens too! Christmas 2016 I made a point of touring the home on the property that had been restored and decorated for Christmas in the era which is when it was lived in and that too was a real treat!

@@PapillonOne the tower is visible from most of Lake Wales, but it is fairly isolated, about a mile drive into the property, in the middle of the gardens and a large orange grove. You can barely hear the bells from the parking area let alone off site.

The whole copyright and intellectual property issue comes in here....is public performance permitted? There was no fee collected, I assume.

John and Doug The venue is responsible for royalty payments for performances in the US. Usually a venue pays a blanket rate to ASCAP or BMI annually for anything that might be played and then it's their job to ensure the rights holders are compensated.

As our Director of Carillon Services, Geert and his team do pay performance royalties for all of our daily concerts - especially for unique performances like this.

Bok Tower Gardens Interesting...is that just for the States? Or do the same laws apply here in iceland?
