I think this film wasn't so much meant to be a sequel to the other two Count Bobby films Peter Alexander was in, but rather more like a prequel. Graf Bobby as a character actually originates as a turn of the century 1900's clueless aristocrat featuring in jokes with other characters including Baron Mucki. So, in reality, this setting is actually more accurate to Graf Bobby. Especially as I wouldn't exactly say this film is set in the 1870's as autos and oil feature in multiple places. Going from the style of the cars in this film and the sorts of outfits the characters were wearing at the end (with the exception of the lead girl, she's definitely wearing a dress for modern times) I'd really place it around 1900-1920. Even Mucki makes a reference to the looming prohibition era, Mucki: "Alkoholverbot - Prostitution", Bobby: "Du meinst Prohibition!" If the wild west seems to be out of place in the 1900's, one can't blame the Europeans for it. Plenty of the old Roy Rogers westerns were set in 'modern' time. In fact, not being a Wild West expert myself I really couldn't say exactly when it truly ended. In short, the two previous Graf Bobby films with Peter Alexander were really more intended to modernize the character and this episode is what I'd actually call more accurate. That being said, yeah, this was not going to win any prizes for consistently accurate costumes or western depictions of any kind. It's really more like a joke on Westerns in general. Once I got that concept, I overcame my initial confusion and now enjoy this as one of my favorite Peter Alexander films. And yes, I'm totally replying to a years old comment, but whatever :) Maybe it will be helpful to someone!
