Isn't the lifeline redundant? The waste yarn is virtually the same, correct?

Thanks for asking! The lifelines are certainly optional, but they do have a different purpose from the waste yarn. The waste yarn is used to create a hole by separating two rows of the working yarn, while the lifelines are used to secure the live stitches on either side of the hole and keep them from unraveling when you remove the waste yarn, especially if you don't put those stitches on needles before removing the waste yarn (instead of putting the needles in first, like I did in this video). The lifelines also make it super clear which stitches should be put back on the needles, since a stitch or two can easily be missed on either side of the hole. Hope this helps! :)
