Lecrae interviews Matt Chandler here - • Lecrae Has a DEEP Conv...
    Summary
In this conversation review, Chase Davis discusses various themes and critiques the rhetoric and positions of Matt Chandler. He highlights Chandler's emphasis on reaching the common man and his skepticism towards theological complexities. Davis also critiques Chandler's approach to pastoral ministry, his views on cultural Christianity, and his use of therapeutic language. He questions Chandler's consistency and courage in addressing controversial topics and suggests that his rhetoric often falls into a third-way, nuanced approach. Davis concludes by expressing his frustration with the lack of depth and intellectual rigor in Chandler's perspectives.

There’s something I’ve found off about the way Pastor Chandler communicates and it correlates with a lot of what is seen in evangelicalism. It’s like he’s in an uncanny valley between femininity (over-expression, body language) and masculinity (shouting down at men, acting hyper-confident). Call it Leather Jacket Male Christian Feminism. Driscoll does the same thing, though he tilts more masculine in communication style. If you looked at the staff directory of Chandler’s church you realize that testosterone levels of the organization are incredibly low, leading to an overall low-T Christianity but with a veneer of masculinity. Some guys love being the top dog, and in this day and age you can get that position by being the top dog to men and by appealing to women’s passions and fears. Many evangelical pastors adopt a body posture and strut around almost line it’s some sort of dominance display. It’s almost libidinal. I think the dirty secret is that a lot of these guys are popular because women are attracted to their display of confidence on stage.
It is obvious that some pastors, while trying to be faithful to scripture, are basically trapped in a gyno-centric mindset while overcompensating by projecting masculine behavior. But at the core the still are in a feminine state (hyper-relational, less rational, low boundary tolerance, more nurturing and less empowering, low protective instinct except towards the interests of women)
Being a former Act 29 type, it’s exhausting to watch and listen to and process for any length of time. It also sets a lot of men up for failure with their wives. Here you have an alpha type feminist pastor encouraging less masculine behaviors in the men in the church at a time when there’s a lot of romantic material out there awash with hyper-masculine men. What should we expect to happen? The church does little to address that. That whole dynamic damaged my own sense of masculinity and who I should be for sure. Thank God for alternative ways of thinking outside Evangelicalism. Being trapped in that dynamic forever must be brutal in some relationships.

The fact that they somewhat rightly recognize keller as a protestant pope in a neutral or approving way says volumes about them and tells you what a “mess” we’re in

This might actually be my favorite episode of yours. I'm not a pastor so I enjoyed your insider knowledge here.
Also, it's a next level of torture to have to endure Lacrae's hemming and hawing at 1.25x speed to Matt's corny platitudes.

Chase, would you consider doing a video exclusively on 3rd Way-ism?

Do you have any book recommendations around what you mentioned as historic Protestant Christianity primarily defining masculinity as pursuing excellence and dominating a field?
There is a clear difference between nominal Christian culture vs true gospel Kingdom culture. Your description of Chandler’s stance on the two being confusing or contradictory is not a fair critique in my opinion.
You’re very hard against 3rd-way-isms. Do you believe that currently the Republican Party has the more God glorifying stance on every policy issue?
Last thing to mention, I know you can’t control the comments but I think you should consider directly addressing inappropriate or degrading comments that only intend to tear down, or at least mention in your videos expectations for the comment section.

Ok….so….Chandler is aghast at “Cultural Christianity” but heads a multi-campus mega church? This is akin to claiming that one loathes smokers while owning stock in Philip Morris.
