    My father ended up in the hospital due to covid. It caused him to develop diabetic ketoacidosis and he will now be on a strict diet to help get him back on track. I’ve been researching high and low as I will be preparing the majority of his meals when he goes home. There are very few RUclips channels that educate care givers on important facts on how to properly meal prep specifically for diabetics. Your momma needs to start a RUclips channel to educate the public and make meal plans specifically for diabetics and to help guide care givers on eating schedules and what to consume and what to stay away from. I promise it’s a much needed resource and this video is heaven sent for me. Thank you for posting it. 🙏

    Hi there! I am a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump. Here are a few grocery suggestions: ole extreme wellness wraps (only 15 g of carb per serving, less is you subtract the fiber content) and taste delicious! I use it for breakfast wraps, sandwiches, tacos... You can find them at Walmart oh you can even cut them up as chips and air fry them with seasoning!) My suggestion for something sweet would be to try chocolate hummus (I typically get it from Aldi) because it's full of fiber it lowers the sugar content in is easier for us diabetics to digest with our glucose levels not going all whackadoo. I hope you and your family have a fantastic visit with your in-laws!!!

      I haven't seen the chocolate hummus. Curious about what you have with it? I eat sugar free jello and strawberries. I have also purchased the low carb Mission tortilla and used Lily's sugar free chocolate chips and fried it in avocado oil then sprinkled powdered Swerve on it for a dessert treat. I think I will trying frying a tortilla and dust it with powdered Swerve and cinnamon.

    Frugal Fit Mom I rarely comment on videos that I watch but felt compelled to comment on yours. Your mom is awesome and I agree with what she said. I am also a diabetes educator (RN, CDCES) but my approach is a little different. I work in chronic disease management. Your mom is correct when she says it should be individualized instruction. A lot goes into the patient's plan of care. What other co-morbidities they have (hypertension, kidney problems, cholesterol, etc), medications, food likes/dislikes, recent labs, specific food triggers, weight loss goals. There really isn't a one size fits all but there are some general rules. Carbs are not the enemy - it's a common misconception in our society. They are a essential part of a person's diet - it's our fuel, especially for our brains (brain fog for people on very low carb diets). RDN (dietitians) usually approach this in grams of carbs. I approach it in portions of carbs with most of my patients with Type 2 Diabetes. I guess the bottom line is most people with diabetes can eat "regular" carbohydrates it just depends on the person and how much carb they can manage/handle. Please reach out if you'd like to chat further. P.S. I love your videos.

    • @adrixxrussell2274
      @adrixxrussell2274 4 года назад +3

      I totally agree, these horrible diets that people eat to help one condition just cause another. Carbs do not cause diabetes, high fat blocks the insulin so the cells can't use it.

    • @kellymcmurtrey7868
      @kellymcmurtrey7868 4 года назад

      @@Randilynn66 Type 2 diabetes is more about insulin resistance (I am assuming you have T2DM since you are on Metformin and Trulicity) and sometimes the cells actually "wake up" and take in too much of the glucose and this can result in hypoglycemia. It is very scary indeed. Especially if alcohol intake is a factor. The liver plays a major role in how the gut is "all married and works together". Protein/carbs combinations with all meals and snacks is so important.

    • @dianeshelton9592
      @dianeshelton9592 3 года назад +1

      The thing to remember is that the person with diabetes has to live with this diet for the rest of their life. They have to find a diet that is achievable and satisfies them. Other they will “ fail “ on the diet have poorly controlled diabetes and all the problems associated with this. Most important thing you can do when entertaining a diabetic, make sure you feed them regularly, ask them what they want to eat and don’t expect them to eat anything different than you would normally eat.

    • @kellymcmurtrey7868
      @kellymcmurtrey7868 3 года назад +1

      @@dianeshelton9592 exactly. It's a person with diabetes - not a diabetic. I don't like that term. When I sit down with my patients I ask them what's a typical day for them meal-wise. It has to work for them in their life. I also don't call it a "diet" as I use the foods the already eat and make it work for them. They have to live their lives. Control the diabetes and not have the diabetes control them. Of course, unless they have a steady diet of Ho-Hos and Twinkies I can typically work with it. Just tweak here and there. Find out what's important to them. Make sure it's a carb and protein together and portion the carb (not eliminate as someone with diabetes -or anyone- actually needs carbs. Very low restrictive carbs diets are not good for someone with diabetes). There is a lot obviously that goes into it (kidney function, lipids, hypertension, etc). that I take into consideration. It is necessary to work with the patient and not dictate to them. I don't want to set them up for failure but rather success. I also find explaining exactly what Type 2 diabetes is is helpful. Because if you understand it it helps you figure it out. It is also important to remember that Type 2 Diabetes is a progressive metabolic disorder and will get worse over time. What works today may not work in 5 years. Making sure my patients understand this (that it's not their fault) is instrumental.

    • @dianeshelton9592
      @dianeshelton9592 3 года назад

      Kelly McMurtrey that’s semantics, it doesn’t matter what you call a person with diabetes whilst you have people promoting diabetic diets.
      It’s a lifestyle change for some people, for others it’s just tweaking their normal life.
      To be honest I feel this whole video was poorly explained, her mother gave her good information in that the person with diabetes will know, whether they acknowledge it or not, what they can and can’t eat and if they have been properly educated will manage their medications to the food they are given. A lot easier for those with insulin, but for both type 1 and 2 diabetes the most important thing if you have a guest with diabetes is to feed them regularly a late meal can be very disastrous. That’s the most important massage, feed them what you would regard as a good healthy normal diet, don’t go out of your way to give them special meals ,but just be careful with meal timings.

    Tips! I just did a huge grocery pickup from Walmart and I love them!! My favorites are
    Salt and Vinegar Almonds
    Breyers Carb Smart ice cream
    Sugar free chocolate syrup and regular syrup
    Joseph's pita and lavash bread
    Kool Aid (made with Splenda!)
    Light & Fit/ Oikos Triple 0 Yogurt
    I also use stuff like lettuce for salad and wraps, lots of fruits and vegetables, turkey slices and cheese for snack and of course eggs, chicken, ground beef and even sausage and bacon.
    Hope that helps! My go is beat my diabetes in 3 months so we can start trying for kids!
    P.s. don't feel pressured to buy food that says Keto, lots of foods are diabetic friendly but might say sugar free or low sugar. You don't need everything to say they're keto friendly or low carb, sometimes they are low carb but just don't say it or say it in small text. Also if it's Keto friendly, it's likely more expensive. Try sugar free foods, they're not AS expensive but still more expensive then of course regular food but that's the price of health! Also use common sense and just look at labels.

    As a type one diabetic who has an insulin pump and a sensor, I was very interested in what you and your mother were talking about. I also see a nutritionist who helps me with my meals. I never considered myself to be a low-carb eater, but from the information your mother gave, under 100 carbs a day is low carb. I try to keep mine lower than that. I try to keep my meals at 50 carbs per meal. Whenever I get a new recipe, I enter all the ingredients into an app so i can break it down nutritionally so I will know how many carbs I am eating. I am 60 years old and have had diabetes for 60 years. I know how important food is to a diabetic and your mother is right. Each diabetic is different. My father and two of my sisters were also diabetic. And we all have to face eating differently. I think it's wonderful that you were trying to help your father-in-law stay on a good meal plan while he's visiting you. Not everybody would do that. I love your videos. And I think it's good to get a professional nutritionist to explain it to us. Diabetes is a very big problem in the United States and I think it's growing innthe type two diabetics because of the way we eat.

      I agree Molly. Guidelines have changed. 45-60 carbs a meal for me would send my blood sugar through the roof. I don’t have that many carbs in a day...sometimes two. When I followed the “old school” diabetic recommendations my a1c went to 11.2 😬. Keto is the only way of eating diet I can really keep my numbers in check.

    • @carolgalloway9303

      Some of this is knowing your own body and also knowing whether you are insulin resistant. My doctor told me that I have the worst insulin resistance that she has seen. I couldn't get my A1C down and was beginning to show signs of a problem with my liver and bleeding in my eyes. I started doing low carb and fasting and I am staying below 7.5 and the liver enzymes are gone as well as no bleeding in the eyes. I also have my cholesterol on the good side rather than bad. Since I am a type 2 diabetic, I am hoping with the diet, exercise and weight loss that I can completely reverse mine eventually. I wish you all luck in your journey.

    My husband is diabetic and he and I have switched to a Keto diet. It has done wonders for his glucose levels - he has been able to stop his insulin injections. As for low carb ice cream - there are several videos on making it at home. Also, Enlightened and Rebel Creamery make some really tasty options but they are a bit spendy. Try substituting chayote squash for the apples in an apple crisp and use stevia, erythritol, monk fruit, or allulose for the sweetener. I will say that some sweeteners (like erythritol) have a slightly different taste but are still quite yummy. A good simple dessert is heavy whipping cream and a sugar-free flavoring whipped to stiff peaks is easy and delish.

I hope that's helpful! Theres tonnes of information online and in books listing the GI (glycemic index) of foods. This is an list of foods in order of how much sugar (aka glucose/aka carbohydrates) are in them. That could be really helpful for you :)

    Thank you so much for actually talking to your mom. I have been a Type 2 Diabetic for 15 years. I went into DKA from trying Keto for a year, two years ago. Finding out from an actual dietitian is such an amazing tool. Each person is specifically different. I run on 45 grams per meal with two snacks of 15 - 30 grams. Some people are able to do Keto. But I loved how you said each person needs to work with a dietitian and find specifics. THANK YOU! I will say I almost didn't click into the video due to the phrase "Diabetes meal plan with me" until i saw the Interview with a dietician part. Thank you for speaking up correctly.

      Co-morbidity is a huge issue with keto too. Many diabetic people have high cholesterol & keto is soooo much fat. My mom's endocrinologist literally screamed at her when she asked if she should consider keto. It's definitely best to talk to a doctor rather than just jump on a fad diet bandwagon.

    My BF is diabetic and when it comes to per meal carbs it is the net carbs he looks at, subtracting any fiber or sugar alcohols from the carb total. Another diabetic friendly lifestyle is the low glycemic index (GI) 'diet' which allows for eating carb containing foods that are less likely to spike blood sugar levels.

    I’m a type 2 diabetic and on 3 insulin’s and 2 diabetic pills. Not to mention cholesterol meds and depression meds and so forth. You have truly started inspiring me to move more. I know I sooooo need to move. It’s obvious I’m morbidly obese as well. I know I haven’t got a choice. Hearing you talk about the 65 year olds and that you and Dave want to be able to move with the grands when that time comes is how I feel as well. I work with seniors at our church and I love this senior ministry so much. I need and want to do this for me first of all and to grow older with my hubby of 32 years. I want to do all with grands when they come. We have 2 grown boys and are empty nesters now. I want to take the seniors to so many places and have the energy to help them as well. Thank you for inspiring so many of us to move and take better care of ourselves. Thank you for being real and raw and so open. Love all your videos.

    I would love to hear more from your mom! Specifically, more of her thoughts on how to stick with a diabetic diet. It’s extremely hard to flip a switch and just dramatically change how you eat overnight. Especially if you have been eating bad for most of your life. What resources are there to help with that transition. I have been a type 2 for about 7 years and I’m only 32. Food is my biggest love and worst enemy. The food addiction cycle is so hard to break. It’s such a struggle.

    You are a wonderful daughter in law.....I am a diabetic...have been for 30 years...your Mom is very good,her advice is spot on...what makes it so hard is that we are humans and we want what we want....even if it isn't good for us...it is harder than anyone can imagine to change everything all at once....and people who are not diabetic never really understand all of the things that means....may I suggest that you ask him what time food schedule he is on....for example I take an injection of a medication called Byetta...30 minutes later I take my insulin and 30 minutes later I eat my meal...I do this morning and evening...lunch time is injection free....but the timing is very important to help keep those numbers where they belong....you are amazing...no one in my family has ever cared enough to ask me...so being the redhead I am...I let them know what I am doing for meals...since they are necessarily different then theirs...good luck...I am sure you will do well...because you care enough to try....

    Cookie recipe. Gluten, sugar, dairy, and egg-free. I had to make these because a friend had a daughter who couldn't eat any of those. She was 13 and just always disappointed at parties, especially around the holidays. So, I whipped up something crazy to prove it could be done. I bought an egg replacer in a box but you can really just sub tapioca flour. It's a one-two ratio for these cookies. First, gluten-free flour (I had to use rice flour because she couldn't have wheat at all, but any GF flour will work. Wheat will make them thicker and chewier, rice will be thinner and more brittle.) A non-dairy butter (I used Earth Balance). Because of the high sodium in this, you don't need any salt or baking soda. Monkfruit sweetener (this is non-glycemic and tastes pretty much identical to sugar. It comes in golden and white but they taste the same.) Finally, I tried half with almond milk and half with soy milk. The almond milk had better consistency but if there are nut allergies involved, you can obviously use soy. Obviously, check the label and some are not 'pure' and that can be a disaster! I also added just a little water because it is extremely crumbly when using rice flour (this changed with GF wheat flour). Finally, I made a party batch so the amounts were enormous and I'll omit that here. Any standard sugar cookie recipe amounts will work, with the exception of the egg replacer (as stated, you need two for every one egg. In this case, I believe it was one TPS of powder per egg mixed in water.) Bake for half the recommended cooking time and test, as they are quite thin (even for GF wheat) and will burn easily. For the RF version, I baked for just five minutes at a standard cookie size at 350, but ovens vary, so please just check them.

    Some of my favorite desserts when I'm trying to not do anything too "bad' are cinnamon apples(apples, butter, cinnamon, and Splenda) topped with whip cream, roasted peaches(peeled peaches sprinkled with cinnamon, salt, and honey) topped with whip cream and walnuts, and SF sweet potato casserole (mashed sweet potatoes, cream cheese,an egg, butter, cinnamon, salt and Splenda to taste). Those are my go to desserts. Obviously other spices can be used but cinnamon is mandatory for me. Lol
