Well THAT'S embarrassing!!! We are thankful to Cody for letting us know; there were several forges that went out with this problem and I've reached out to the owners to get the replacement parts in their hands as soon as possible. As for the lack of instructions, they were taped on the top layer of insulation in the box. :-) We recently reworked the website and improved the written instructions, but have not gotten the new instructions on our new website yet. Growing pains!
Whitlox Homestead The instructions were very good and included. I simply misplaced them,
Whitlox Homestead Growing pains indeed!! Such a nice problem to have though since you wouldn't have them if you weren't GROWING!! I love to see innovative products like this become successful and hope to have one of your forges when I get back on my feet. I was using charcoal in a brake drum forge before I built a small gasser, but the propane is expensive and the brake drum doesn't work well with wood which is free. Your forge looks to be the best way to go for me and I look forward to the day (which won't be long now) that I can order one for myself.
Tenspeed TheBikeHanger Thank you for the suggestion: our forge assembly instruction pdfs are now at the top of their description on our website: whitloxhomestead.com/products/fullsize-whitlox-wood-fired-forge If you know how I can rotate them, I'm all ears!
Whitlox Homestead No one faults a company for not being perfect. It's the companies response and their dedication to their customers that matters to me. Good for Whitlox Homestead!
eirefile Such a good lesson! An important part of living honorably!
Hi Cody, this evening hasn't been the best for me and has put me in a really bad mood. The first thing I did was to go to my subscriptions box to see if there was a video from you, you're videos always cheer me up no matter how bad of a mood I'm in. You may not be the best at everything but they sure are entertaining with sharing what you do know. I couldn't list how much you've taught me :) thank you for uploading so many quality videos because it always helps when I'm feeling down. You are almost like a second dad to me. Your the man Cody. Thank you for everything
You know a man is excited when he throws the boxes away to get to the gift inside. Congrats on the new forge! I have a homemade version of the same forge that I really enjoy.
I have never seen someone so excited to open up a box full of bricks.
Cody, I really enjoyed your visit to the Steam-up. I like that you met and talked with other people involved. I agree that Re-Enactment groups, Living History places, or just a business doing it the old way would all be a good addition to your current content.
I think it would be great to find some old timers that share their trade secrets with everyone. Usually if your working at a job with them they keep a lot to themselves because it's job security. I used to get books from an old publishing company called Lindsay's publication. They had a wealth of info on lost technologies. I think that is a great direction for your channel to re inform people of the lost ways of doing things. Thanks for putting yourself out there and sharing it with us. Joe
This video clearly demonstrates how the majority of Us open packages and hunt for instructors or other pieces. Can't even count the number of times I have searched the trashed packaging like this! Great video and nice work improvising!
Factory tours, or interviews with interesting people, etc, would be very interesting. thanks for all you do.
I got mine!!!! (In New Zealand that is) Yay for burning stuff!)
I have the small forge. It does not have the two pipes sorry...
john espin Amazon doesn't mail internationally, how did you pull that off?! Also how much was shipping?? ouch..
Got a friend in the States to send it on. Shipping was insane! I think it would be nice for an option of getting everything minus the fire bricks for people like me. Really happy with what I've got though. Having a ball.
Cool idea!
Nice beard..
AQ here. I read in "The Art of Blacksmithing" that charcoal is superior to coal or wood for smithing. It's apparently simple to make, but still a pain (simple, but not easy).
If you ever find yourself with nothing to do (ha!) you can make it by stuffing a steel drum full of wood, put the lid on (with a small hole in the top), and build a fire under and around it. Once it heats up, light the wood gas coming out of the hole in the top, and when it eventually goes out, the wood inside will have been changed to charcoal. More detailed instructions can be found easily on the web.
If TSHTF, WROL, or TEOTWAKI happens, you also have charcoal to use to help in water purification, or treatment of certain other liquids.
Just FYI. Thanks for all of the great videos.
Yes things like you were talking about would be good.
Events and etc. would make a nice addition.
Thank You
A field trip out to someone doing things the old way would be great every now and again. Logging with horses, cheese makers, or different folks in the same line of work to see how they approach problems would be great.
I can't wait to see what you manage to achieve with this.
Chris Arlott Heat up metal and pound on it!
Wow, you looked very eager to open those boxes! Another great video Cody! Looking forward to the rest.
I had a little flash back to drafting class just now, lol. I'l bet if you line up the flat pieces the HOLES will fall right on the outer edge of the leg assembly. It's SO easy to transpose measurements in those close approximations... but what a nice set up you now have!!!
Looking forward to seeing part 2 and so on
I would just like to mention I think its really cool that you can fell a tree AND you know what a faraday cage is.
Its getting close to cider pressing season here in Indiana. Last year was my first year and I got 30 to 40 gallons from 5 ok sized trees I'm hoping for more this year.
this is awesome, ive been so excited to see you get this bad boy. i love the idea this forge works
I am the same way cody,I alter and fix stuff like that all the time. Can't wait to see you use it.fyi granberg also stands behind all their products like a great company should.
Like the dual camera setup!
I really enjoyed your last compilation of videos from that fair. Especially in the beginning where you showed those planetary gears (I think that's what you call it). I don't know a whole lot about steam engines but I'd love to learn more. If you ever do a video like that again please don't be afraid to go into detail. It's fascinating! Also, I would not be opposed to videos about modern carburated engines. Thanks for the great videos.
wranglerstar I've been waiting for this video for SOOOO long
great video looking forward to part two i love it when you do reviews with some of these other folks you always do a great job and you introduce us to some great products
Thank you for the video!
Class act Cody. In the end all is well.
Nice to see you got this. I'm jealous!
So I see a lot of negative people on here. First off I've never done any Blacksmithing work. However if Cody is happy that's what is important. Some of you say make your own. You guys have never worked a farm or took care of acreage. By spending a little money and even if there is a modification or two. I really don't think it's a big deal.
So I Love your videos so keep on keeping on. Who cares what these other think.
God bless you and your family.
Cody; please recheck 3:42, your missing pieces fall on the table and that's why you're 5 cms shorter. Use it in good health...
Mehmet Can What's a cm?
Measurement for grown ups! :) Joking aside, that should be the reason for your gap. By the way, if you happen to have a lazer thermometer, could you measure the heat levels on your trial run, that would be very helpful. Once again, use it in good health and best regards to Mrs. Wranglerstar and Jack.
wranglerstar In other words, think about how you feel about metric system, that's how I feel about the imperial system. 5cms=2inches
Mehmet Can LOL, I don't have a LT, would be interesting, Fresh P has one, You should go ask here to bring it over,
She looks like a great cook. If I have such credit to ask for favors, you can be sure that I'll use it for some tasty goodies instead of a lazer thermometer! :)
That's a nice forge! Yea the bottom was not sized right but looks great.i don't have a workshop to put it in but something like that may be ok outside
Cody, you basically just reenacted every "some assembly required" job I've every had to do lol.
I would love to see some old techniques by professionals, as well as factory tours.
Would love to see more videos like the saw mill and the fair!
Filson factory tour!!!!!!!!!
Cameron McPeak Agreed
those are some snazzy glasses cody
Cody you sir are a lot more patient that I would have been. $400.00 bucks invested. I would have been spitting expletives. Kudos!
YES Like the old shoemaker/cobbler!.... or was that Nutn that did that one... or like the Nicks Shoes one you did... Those are awesome videos! For posterity if nothing else!!!
Nice video,
Have a great day everyone 😊
I've been waiting for him to get his was gonna buy one but wanted to see it work a little first
Factory tours are awesome. This is, if they are of the right places. Like with the Nick's Boots, It was great because they take amazing pride in what they do and it isn't about making money with them as much as making the best boots money can buy.. If you find places or people making the absolute best of something, I would love to see that.
I think it would be a good idea to show some more stuff like the steam up
Perhaps the legs at the base should be wider than the top where it bolts onto the forge pan for stability. I wonder if you loosened up the pairs of bolts on each end of the lower brace and see if it possibly would angle out and all come together.
############. Top forge pan

I could be completely wrong too.
Dan Squires Great picture Dan, LOL
Is that stand going to be rigid enough once the ceramic bricks are inserted? (Possible WS retrofit in our future?) Would love to see upgraded wheels and angle bar.reinforcements.
Tenspeed TheBikeHanger Agree. I would upgrade the wheels. Those look appropriate for a small charcoal grill but on his lot he may want to switch to a larger diameter wheel to make it over the gravel more safely.
Why have you and the family not made a day trip to visit Paul Gautschi? He seems right up your line.
Yes!!! more steam engine festivals, County agricultural fairs, and Pioneer crafts and skills workshops. Maybe there is a "Hit and Miss" engine convention close by.
Dear Mr. W, will you be using your current forge blower on the wood fueled forge? Or will you be using the blower that came with the package?
Whitlox Homestead wranglerstar If you're going to be rolling that around much with all that weight on the top, I'd suggest you add a couple of diagonal braces to the base. Think metal shelves. Just a thought.......
I watched your viedo on the steam engines and I wished you would have showed more of the working parts of the machines. Do you think those grease fitings where up grades on the machines? Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Wayne In GA
Yes I would like to see more stuff like the steam up
Nice pants. How are the Round House holding up?
I really liked the video about the boot maker or cobbler. Do you know or not if he found some one to take over the business ? Thank you Cody
Oh, I forgot to mention, that's not 'packing foam' Cody. That's insulation that goes between the firebrick and the steel of the forge body. I can see it clearly on the Witlox website photos. Check out the photo with the text 'balloons' on it.
I'm 15 and I really find it interesting to see things done by hand or in a more traditional way. What happened to the I did it section :) thanks for producing quality video's. Looking forward to the next one
It looks like at 9:08, u have the legs facing the wrong way. That should buy you at least 1.5 inches!
MusicSmith It would have made no difference. The holes are not offset,
Wranglerstar - you should go visit Murray Carter in Hillsboro, OR. He is a 17th generation Yoshimoto bladesmith.
"If im not, well... you get to watch 2" That made me lol
Cool video.
Anyone else try sneeking a peek around the shop to see what's in store?
I'm thinking timber something is on the way ;)
Cody, I know you probably won't respond but I wood like to tell you about those axe that wold be great in your forest tool kit
its called the max it is a multiple purposes axe with atacmeny a like a shovel, pick, wide pick ,and a rake . Best part is USA MADE. I use mine for 4 wheeling in my land cruiser we throw it in trees cut fire wood and I wood love to see a video review of it by a professional
whiz8 I'll take a look at it. Can you provide us a link?
forresttoolco.com/the_max.html
It would mean a lot
If u do just one factory tour go on down to hull oaks lumber the last stem power sawmill in the USA maybe even the world. It's here in Oregon down by Monroe.
Yus factory tours!
How large is his pole barn? I feel like he's stated this in previous videos. I'm getting ready to start buying for my first one and want it to be about that big inside.
hey, what kind of watch strap do you wear? I use to have one like that when I deployed but I can't remember the name.
Sorry for the off-topic question Cody, but what are the dimensions of your pole barn you're working in?
What kind of spectacles are you wearing Wrangler? I've gotta get some new glasses. I like those frames.
awesome videos
I love it when your charmed life is more like mine. Keep it real brother. We love the videos. God Bless you and yours. QST and family. : )
As my grandfather used to say "The devils in the details."
I can not believe your USPS shipments was not completely destroy when you received it. I'm thinking it was several days late, if not, you must have had special shipping with USPS and or a direct contact.......Maybe narwhals. I have never had anything good with USPS shipping, every shipment has always been way late and the box/items has been almost or completely destroyed!
Just stating facts from my experiences......Most all are really late and damaged......
I picture guys standing around kicking box's around and running them over with trucks, dirt bikes, tanks, etc...
I can not wait to see the next video with creating the bands for the anvil stand or anything else that is awesome using this awesome forge...!!! You always do awesome work!
Always Awesome Video's!
IBNetMan
Hi,
My comment is not related to the forge: I would like to know what brand are your pants ?
Sorry if it’s a weird question but I noticed the position of the pockets and it seems more accessible than “jeans” pockets.
Thank you
Love your videos
Bonne continuation :)
Siro Simo Filson tin pants
wranglerstar Thank you very much :)
Do you know about the Buffalo Brand pants ? I just get a pair of them. American made, may be a little bit lighter and less heavy duty than the tin pants but the position of the pockets is very smart ! I don't get any credit or any reward on those but I like to support American local maker and I thought you might be interested. and for the price it's worth to try (www.buffalobrandwear.com/)
Cody,
During a Bible Study several months back (I believe) you mentioned a trip to Alabama in August. Is this still in the works?
Matt
Woah! How are you gonna fit that huge turbo in your truck???😂
like a child on christmas morning!
Scott Haun Thank you Scott,
What ever became of the John Deere crawler project? And when will we see that old motorcycle come down off the shelf?
Might have been the Whitlox people calling you back.
"We all make mistakes", you were very understanding with this company and their mistakes, makes me wonder why you were bashing so hard on emerson. I mean cmon.... we all make mistakes.
joe grey A pattern of poor quality is very different from one oversight,
wranglerstar I've seen no pattern of poor quality in my 3 emersons, but I suppose im just being a "fan boy". You should really have a look at the karambits though, there really isn't anything else like it.
Why get the another hand crank blower when you already have one?
***** How many cars do you have Jackson?
wranglerstar A swing and a miss, I'm 16 and currently saving up for one, I see your point though.
whats that song at the beginning?
The happy mandolin (it's in the you tube music library) I've used it in the past for some of my videos.
Hi Cody, actually I'd love it if you would 'shift gears' with your channel, now that your production skills are taking off so nicely. Perhaps you could create another channel that does exactly what you are describing. There's no place better than the Pacific Northwest to do a 'travel log' type production. Your "homestead" stuff is always terrific but you and your family have a talent for being very entertaining while seeing other places. I know you are spreading yourself pretty thin as it is, so perhaps additional help and resources for production could ease the load. You have tons of untapped potential in what you could present and the people you could touch. As always, good stuff. I'm just 'spitballing' here not criticizing in any way. PS what's with the 'cheapo' wheels on the forge?
It would be nice to see other people doing stuff like you do.
The Steam up guys all said the same thing; :Preserving history".
What I find so fascinating about that fair was that this was the era where machines were freeing people from direct labor. Before this everything that was made or done was by muscle labor, either man or animal. These machines, made by muscle labor, were the catalyst to our modern world. The ancient Greek, Hero, made a steam engine over 2000 years ago but it was never used for any purpose. Harnessing steam, putting it to use, freeing mankind from direct labor was the greatest idea in human history.
Coll
lol 3 min in you are like a kid in a candy store .I hope you look after Mrs WS like this , well with usefull things for what she does .I dunno maybe a new wood fired stove .
This is exciting! Can wait till u get some BS vids going. Great vid keep it up Cody.
well it was kinda easy too guess what the boxes had in them sinca you put it in the title haha
Ohmanzz Good point, this was not a very good mystery,
Oops. ;o)
lemons and lemonade. you made lemonade out of the forge cart.
Part 2
Like a wise man once said, "when all else fails, read the instructions."
it's a good thing those parts were to long instead of to short
Where are the manly manors?
Yes but I almost always use coal, unless the part is simpler to forge with propane.
You know with in 5 mins of it arriving he was building it and filming this video haha
I thought that blower was a turbo for a second
you are bending your iphone!!! lol
While they very well might have sent you the wrong part, kinda hard to know for sure without reading the instructions or talking to them. Might be one of those things that just doesn't make sense till ya see it or have it explained. Or....they sent the wrong parts :)
That is too bad, although it is a pretty straight forward fix.
Cant*
It's easy to be a critic but you should send it back. It's too light fragile and therefore dangerous, especially around young ones. If you just are going to make hooks and nails it's probably ok, but blacksmithing slowly leads to larger and larger work. Buy a good fire pot, a side draft hood, and if you must use wood make your own charcoal in a 50 gallon barrel. It's easy (some say it's better for sharp pointy things anyway.)
Ask yourself is this a quality product? Worst case do yourself a BIG favor and weld up a real heavy duty stand.
Enjoy the website especially hanging a axe handle correctly.
steve thompson Have you made your own charcoal?
Not to beat on Whitlox but from the way it looks I think you would have been able to put a forge like that togheter with better results, I understand the whole point is to support this kind of buisness but still...
/DBT/ On their website I believe they say that you can make your own, probably better or exactly the same as theirs, just if you don't want to, then you can buy from them.
/DBT/ But still what? The two pieces were cut the wrong length. Whitlox addressed it, done deal, What do you have to complaining about?
wranglerstar I can't really tell because I haven't had it in my hands but it kinda looks like a cheap build. Is not really about the wrong sized pieces, that happens.
I guess I'm gonna be proven wrong as soon as you make a video trying it, but the way it looks is kinda off putting to me.
That stand looks kinda flimsy
owen connelly It's not. I was filming without the bottom braces installed. It's rock solid,
Must have been someone who got confused between standard and metric measurements.
i use coal to fire my forge
