I picked up my Emira last Saturday, ordered it July 2021. The car is so good, the driving experience so engaging, I can't put the car away in the garage...
The reactions from other people seeing it: thumbs up, smiles, people grabbing the phone to take photos, audible comments "Cool car". Lotus have nailed this car!
Seneca Blue, black pack, touring suspension. (Auckland, New Zealand)
Congrats, have fun! :D
Enjoy.
Happy with touring? Could you handle stiffer with sport? Its the one thing im stressing over before locking in the rezzy
@@rm1626go with Tour! I got Tour and it’s perfect, all the journos say go Touring. Sport is track only really - too stiff!
Wow I'm in Auckland too would love to see Ur car
Somebody in Hollywood, please buy the film rights to "Paper Father" so Todd can buy his Lotus.
I got distracted watching Todd’s hair act as a “G-meter” when Paul was cornering
The V6 Emira has become my new attainable dream car. I love pretty much everything about it (short of actually having driven it), but if this review, your comparison video, and the other videos on the Emira are anything to go by, I know I'll love that part about it the most. Let's just hope my bills, salary, and any depreciation these go through align someday, and I'm able to get one in the next decade. What an incredible car!
I want the Toyota powered V6 version as well… I feel this car is the spiritual successor to the MR2. Especially since Toyota and Lotus collaborated on the original MR2. … I miss my 86 MR2 so badly 😢
@adonian it's funny you mention the MR2. I have an 2004 SW30 and it's one of the most fun cars I've ever driven despite its 140hp 1zz economy motor lol. I'm a massive Toyota and mid engine fan. As you said, the Emira (and Evora) with the V6 was like Lotus blessing MR2 fans with a spiritual successor.
@@adonianGood mention of the M2. The Camry V6 with that supercharge sounds like a symphony. Amazing car
I hope Lotus doesn't stop making this car, ever!! In a digital world, analog is so refreshing!
They'll have too unfortunately due to he uk government by 2030
Finally, Lotus has a great looking car inside and out and a daily driver. A Lotus now on my bucket list.
Absolute dream car
Yes, may need to sell stuff so I can buy one.
Todd says, "I feel like automotive journalists slept on the Evora". I too owned a Lotus (Elise) for 5 years and I watch automotive RUclips shows with hopes of seeing more Lotus praise. I can attest, everyone sleeps on Lotus in general.
I've witnessed top RUclips automotive channels give 26+ minute reviews praising the same cars over and over because the new trim of whatever (German) car is slightly different than last years. Then they give the newest Evora S (and other supercharged models) a 7 minute review because they already reviewed a non-supercharged model once, 8 years ago. I hear them quote Colin Chapman all the time. I hear them refer to the Lotus as great cars when they're reviewing other lightweight cars.
It's frustrating because you have Toyota/Yamaha reliability and basically Toyota Mid-Engine sports cars with European styling and nobody can be bothered to give it the time of day.
We’re glad you like Lotus and Todd’s appreciation of their cars. We’ve got a lot more Elise content coming soon to our original /EverydayDriver channel (plus an Emira comparison over ther too)! Thanks for watching!
You can tell that Geely has provided Lotus with access to the Volvo parts bin, not a bad thing either. Looks like a fantastic car
Now all we need is a Volvo with “Handling by Lotus“!
As someone that owns a GR86, this is definitely the car I hope to buy at some point in the future. Simple, light, fun, and beautiful.
It was thanks to you two guys that I test drove the Evora GT I didn't think I would fit in it. But I did at 6ft 3inchs as I test drove it in NYC. Now its on my Bucket list. Thanks.
We’re thrilled to have helped you discover them. Great cars! Thanks for watching!
Get it!!
Would rather the channel have the Emira than the C8 … and I LOVE the C8
But this is “The ALT!” which would be great for comparisons when the time with the C8 is over
It's a lot more expensive than the C8.
Love watching your videos. It’s like talking to a good friend about good cars.
Thank you. We consider that a great compliment!
Thank you. I was waiting for you guys to get your hands on the Emia, and you did not disappoint. The Emira is the kind of sports car I was waiting for. I do not care about 700+ horsepower. I care about driving engagement and handling and it looks like the Emira has those in spades. On top of that it just looks spectacular. This "may" be the dawn of the internal combustion engine but on the market right now are some pretty amazing manual sports cars. We don't just have a variety of manual sports cars to choose from, we have many incredible manual sports cars to choose from. If a car enthusiast can't find the right sports car right now, they are either (1) not really looking or (2) not being serious with themselves. Thanks again. I would love to add one of these to the stable especially now that I heard the Porshe GT4 in a manual is longer going to be produced. Besides, with that bulletproof Toyota sourced supercharged V6 in the long run the Emira looks like it will be the easier and cheaper car to maintain than the Porche GT4. Again, well done and very well done Lotus!
Glad you enjoyed. And we hope you’ve seen our comparison video with this Emira and a Cayman GTS and Corvette. Thank you for watching!
@@TestDriveVideos Yes I did. Again, you guys did an amazing job. I am definitely not taking the fact we have all these amazing sports cars on the market for granted. I believe many of these cars will be future collectables because they are that good and the Emira is right up there on that list. Thanks again!
I find it interesting that Paul is hung up on the interior sharing bits from Geely, and yet if you look at the interior of a Cayman, there are bits of Jetta, and Taos everywhere, and somehow Porsche is infallible.
Lotus for life.
I want this car to happen for Todd. I hope he has one in the near future. Good luck chaps!
I want one so bad. I am almost done paying off my ND2 MX5 RF. The problem is that I could trade in my MX5 and sell my Wrangler to make room for this financially, but I don't want to give up either of those. The MX5 RF is just amazing and driving with the Targa roof is perfect. I'll take a roadster over a coupe any day of the week so I can't give that up. And the Jeep is a manual so that's a whole different kind of fun. I'm gonna have to wait to add one of these I think. What bothers me is that another guy in my neighborhood just put in his pre-order! I've been lusting after one since it was announced and now he's gonna be the local guy that gets one first... lol
I was certain that there was nothing for me between my current car and a 911
...then the Emira was announced and now I'm not sure I want anything else
ole Harry of EVO noted Emira has weight distribution closer to 911 than Cayma/Boxster, yet V6 cannot sit as low as flat6, so there is some compelling evidence for your desire...
Hi, from Japan!! I always love to see your smiles when you drive pure sports cars. The smiling faces are definitely different from the moments you drive other cars like SUV or sedan or etc… I can understand it!! Todd is the person who deserved to have Emira!! I hope you can own it someday.
I just picked up your exact config down to the leather steering wheel 4 days ago. This is the most fun I had since my 84 308GTB.
Been dying to watch this, for Todd's reaction as a Lotus enthusiast if for nothing else, but didn't want to cloud my judgment before experiencing it. I don't understand the 2 clicks for driving mode or the fact that traction control is buried in the infotainment either, but if that's the biggest complaint then it's probably pretty good 😂. And I found I could get my finger between the guard to start it ha. Love what you guys do and always love to see you guys having some fun!
Smoking Tire and Throttle House both said for under 100k, this is the best sports car you can buy. Forget a M2, Supra, C8 Corvette, Cayman, new Z, Camaro SS 1LE, Mustang GT Mach whatever (don't know Mustangs). This blows them all away. This car is pretty much a modern day NSX. Think about it...6 speed manual, hydraulic steering, double wishbone front and rear suspension, mid engine 6 cylinder, rear wheel drive, and a mechanical LSD. Along with a modern interior like a touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple Car play which is minimalistic and fast enough and not filled with gimmicks like hand gestures, a manual volume knob, a manual climate control with buttons.
Only cons I can think of are no manual hand brake lever and the engine's redline of 6800rpm could be higher. Hopefully we get a Emira GT or Emira 430 with a 7500rpm redline or something.
I think any higher performance variants will have the 4 cylinder AMG engine, emissions regulations made Lotus dial back the engine in the Emira from the Evora GT
You can get a tune to add another 35-40hp and gain another 200rpm safely.
Stunning design-looks good from any angle and that Verdant Green is the dog's danglers-would probably get it with the tan leather trim, leather- not alcantara wheel, and touring suspension for livability given yours and Harry Metcalfe's assessments. I could just about justify it at 90k but not at 105K so will wait for a lightly used version to go with my 69 Elan but maybe I should just get an Elise as a stablemate instead. Looking forward to your future expanded Elise reviews and fingers crossed for Todd to trip over a pot of gold so he can add an Emira to his fleet! Cheers-love your enthusiasm for this brand.
Todd's spec for the Emira is exactly what I would do. Excellent choice! I can't afford it either though 😭
Long live analog cars!
I’ll take a yellow one please 😄
Absolutely Stunning…. and attainable
I LOVE this car. Perfect colour combo ❤
Been waiting for you guys to do this one… Thanks!
Own 3 Evoras and waiting for Emira R 4cyl to be amnnouced. S/R are 2 variants already listed by Lotus in company documentation. All about manuals but 4cyl/DCTwill be the best version of Emira. Lighter aluminum rear subframe vs steel of V6 and will out shift stock V6 manual
But the 4cyl also goes to an electric rack. Please report back when you get one, I'm curious.
Better in my mind is manual transmission. It's more engaging and more fun. I could care less about being a smidge faster/lighter with an automatic or DCT.
In 2009, heat of the recession, I passed on a new, old stock, Evora, for mid 60-ish at STL's only Lotus/Lambo dealer. I history repats itself, and I can buy one in the mid-60s, aka 20 off base, say spring 2025,, when everyone is bankrupt, I'll plunk down the cash and have my first, cool, toy, aside of John Deere tractors, hot hatches, and Honda RR bikes. I am praying for a recession.
One common theme in Emira reviews seems to be smiles. I have one (red, manual, silver wheels) and it is great fun. Definitely not as refined as the ftypes and Porsches I tested but you can have a lot of fun at legal(ish) speeds. When people are paying hundreds of thousands to restomod old cars to get a manual box, good handling, bit more power, I think it’s good value. I haven’t had problems with build quality, the boot fits my golf clubs!, but i have just got two recall letters for wipers and airbags. Re revs, in my view you have a manual to feel involved so I don’t mind the low rev limit and on British country roads I don’t have a problem. I have heard it gets very noisy on autobahn at top speeds, and slow to top out and I can imagine that.
It's a good-looking car. Their best looking yet.
I got mine on order! this is gunna be the slowest 14 months ever
Great review guys. I've had my Emira for about a month, and I'm loving it. I'm a bit surprised that you were so critical of the seats . . . I find them very comfortable, and because I don't use the Emira as a track car, I don't really want larger bolsters that make it harder to climb in/out.
this thing looks amazing
I have one on order. Test drove it a few months ago. I may not take it though. I like my 718 Spyder much more and am concerned about quality control issues. I’m likely going to go with a Cayman GTS instead as an additional vehicle or a C8.
Loving my Cayman GTS, couldn't be happier.
If the hydraullic steering and chassis doesn't speak to you, then you are better off with the Porsche.
@@sanglemalt It’s actually the build quality that speaks to me. I’ve been in both cars. Lotus is greatly improved but can’t compete with Porsche.
@@Closertotruth2 Completely understand. I am happy to forgive Lotus for build quality issues because of the feel and chassis handling. Porsche was always the sensible option for me that my head said yes, but my heart said no. After owning 2 exiges, I know about build quality, but the fundamental stuff is good and the rest is cheap to replace - relatively. And the rawness and truth of the experience is more fun. I've been in so many porsches and did camp4 and camp4s. They weren't for me. You can't make a bad choice.
Todd face says it all. He will own one
Very tight in the cabin. Good job you know each other 🤪
Great review. The Emira is really a unique car today and checks a lot of boxes 👍🏻
Agree about the seats. They need more bolstering to the sides and legs, I find myself using the transmission tunnel to brace against on hard cornering due to movement in the seat.
I too would get one in red with a tan interior!
Todd you can drive mine anytime when I get it delivered.
Got it specked the same way but going with the blue or green. Just wish it was a brighter green.
Really!! That’s wonderful
Liking and commenting so Todd can get his Emira.
There's two happy guys right there... 😂
That Verdant looks awesome in your sunny weather - doesn't look quite so good in the Manchester UK rain misery... 🤦♂
The joy of a car is building it into the best version of itself. If this truly comes from factory as perfect and needs nothing, that's great, but there isn't much journey you can take with it.
There's no development, no modding, no agonizing over which parts to get. Maybe a car can be too good.
Great review guys !! I'm excited to drive one, one day !!
I would be more than happy with a Evora
I must have this car 🙏👍😎
It’s like what a British corvette if it was mid engine from like 5 years ago would have been . I want it so bad 👍
Fantastic content as always guys! Makes me want to drive one. Just how much is left over from the Z Car Sale? Kinda make you wish you had used "Bring a Trailer" now? Is there enough left over to make a good down payment on a Emira? LOVE that green! Woof.
Dude, if Paul gets to rock a C8, you get a Emira Todd!!
I so wish they would do a targa version, or heck even a roadster. Sure it will add some weight, but I don’t live by any canyons and if I’m on a track, I’d prefer to actually race.
Well, Todd can sell the Elise, and that would knock $35-$40k off the price......
The 4 cylinder turbo might make the same peak numbers as the V6 supercharged , but where does it make that power ? I'm betting there's no power down low , and it needs to be revved out to see any of those numbers .
They use last gen tech and mechanicals to keep costs down but the price in the end is the same or more than cars that deliver more. I love the cars but only look forward to them used, where the price makes sense.
I own a C8 Corvette convertible and I was seriously debating whether I should trade it in for an Emira. The price in Canada is more than the Corvette, but the real reason I decided against it is that I realized that the only thing I liked about it is it's exterior styling and really nothing else. BTW: the spec at the end is almost exactly the same spec as my C8, lol!
Did you drive the Emira? I would say if you drive a C8 and Emira back to back you'll 9 out of 10 times like driving the Emira more. Some people prefer looks or straight line power over driving a car, so I understand peoples preference for a less drivers focused car.
Yeah good luck… most placed pre orders 2 years ago….. and subsequently cancelled them because Lotus production delays….
Great job guys 👍
Great video 🙏🙏
Love it, but not as much as my Porsche Cayman GTS. The Lotus is when someone has tired of their Porsche and needs one of the few other things that can scratch that itch.
I liken this to a 981 Boxster with the 2.7. It has just enough everything to be fun.
More like the 981 s or gts
Autobild tested an Emira round Eurospeedway - Lausitz and it was slower than the base 718 Cayman (300HP).
Our interest is in driving involvement and fun. A faster lap time doesn’t always mean a car is more fun to drive. Thanks for watching!
@@TestDriveVideos It nearly always means a car has better handling, more grip, better braking and better body control all of which deliver a better driving experience. Your perception of fun is not a metric, its simply a subjective opinion. My subjective opinion is the Cayman GTS 4L NA wallops the Emira for fun and objectively its quicker a round. The fact a base Cayman is quicker round a track than the Emira is a damning indictment of the Lotus.
If I had the money and was in the market I’d take this over the competition any day.
the next possible evolution of emira could be an electric motor added to the front of the AMG engine. It would b a reasonable transition to the all ev lotus.
Test drove it. As amazing as it gets. Even the looks, its smaller than you think but the color...... magma red was unbelievable
Looks like a sleek compact 458 ferrari italia😮
A manual AMG 4cyl would be excellent! Less weight, more potential, and possibly less expensive.
Sadly they just announced the 4cly price hike to basically the same as the v6, and not much less weight. Was meant to be £60k and is £80k! Initial reviews are good but price is high for a 4 pot.
@@benlofthouse5206 I would still stick to the V6….that turbo on the I4 is located way too close to the trunk and lid. I can picture a warped engine cover and even hotter trunk than the V6.
Waiting for the AMG engine and paddle shifting. Getting too old to row my own gears in traffic.
Which is a better driver's car between this Lotus and the new GR Supra manual?
Really cool car. The AMG will be a detuned version of the A45s and possibly not any cheaper than the V6. I wish every sports car manufacturer put the engine start and driving modes on the wheel like Porsche do.
I much prefer the Mclaren method of leaving the steering wheel clean and not giving a zillion useless options (like mercedes). I hate bumping into useless buttons while driving spiritedly. Each to their own though. My 2c.
that BRG color is sweet
I think it's called Verdant green, and it looks black unless in the cloud free sun. That's the only time it looks good. I'd prefer the BRG from the earlier Lotus years.
You can actually see in Todd's eyes, him doing man maths to justify his next purchase and Paul isn't helping 😂😂
Yasss❤❤❤ 0:18
$105k isn’t that much more than Paul paid for the C8!
Interesting that Todd chose Magma Red, he’s not usually a fan of red as he’s said on the podcast.
Seduction in it's execution
Can you get a set of golf clubs in the back ?
Unlikely. Either the passenger seat or dedicate this car to other kinds of driving. Thanks for watching!
The word on the street is that the Emira did not actually lose 16HP compared to the Evora GT, but rather that number was a bit optimistic under perfect conditions that might not always be able to be duplicated. Unlike many other manufacturers cars, the Evora GT in instrumented testing never produced the same results as the manufacturer claimed (0-60 in 3.8 seconds etc) and based on the 1/4 times it was sometimes hard to believe that there was actually a full 416HP present at times.
The Emira revs to 6800 the Evora to 7000. Hence the reason the Evora makes a bit more power. Don't know why they limited the Emira on the fist edition - perhaps to give them some 'wiggle room' when they release a Sport version?
@@darren4747 or the fact that the Evora fell on its face past 6500RPM. Having owned an Evora GT I can confirm there was little incentive to take it all the way to 7000RPM, so I doubt it was continuing to make much past that point, but perhaps they will have additional revs/power in future models like you said
@jameswillard1 my Evora 400 pulls hard to the 7000 rpm redline, it really picks up after 6000 rpm and it's easy to hit the limiter.
Lotus detuned the Emira due to emissions requirements.
The Evora 400 generally dyno'd at 406hp by Lotus, Lotus said they guaranteed 400hp minimum on the 400, I have no doubt the GT has 416hp, especially since Lotus extracted more power for other markets.
v6 and above 2 litres is exotic in europe
I need one, or two =).
This is a logical next from my BRZ. Now I need to win the lottery! #lifegoals
How's the kef sound system?
It's beautiful. But I don't want something between an Evora and an Elise. I want something that's an Elise but even MORE Elise.
fantastic
I wish you both had the same forgiving nature when reviewing Lexus models like the IS 500 as you do with the Lotus vehicles,
Ravi (2011 Maybach owner)
Only Porsche and Lotus still make rear-mid-engine manual cars. Too bad Porsche will end the Cayman 718 GT4. I am convinced all the rear-mid-engine manual cars are collectible items. For me, Porsche Cayman 718 GT4, Lotus Emira, Honda NSX 1st generation, Toyota MR2 W20, Ferrari F430, all of them manual; are the collectibles vehicles.
@14:51. Well that aged well. :)
Last car lotus releases was the v6 exige, 2012… not 2008..
Excellent point… and an amazing variant. But that’s not a road legal car in the US. We’ve driven it in Europe, but in our home market it was limited to a handful of track only cars. Thanks for watching!
@TestDriveVideos ah fair enough. I owned one for a while (australia). The only car in my life I ever regret selling. Previous model evora S was also a great underrated car.
I want to buy a lotus but I’m not going to buy one at these interest rates.
Honestly the price is the best on a “super car”. $100k
They keep saying supercharged. Is is super, or is it turbo?
The V6 variant is supercharged, but the I4 variant is turbo with DCT.
does Emira have a rev matching assist?
No
Oh, it’s only money Todd (in my best British accent)
Just buy one and get your favorite seats. Also, I think deep subconsciously you want a Ferrari.
The Emira is NOT built on the Evora chassis by the way
Untrue.
@@EvoraGT430 true. It's an evolution, but it's different. Side sills are narrower, there's different chassis for left and right hand drive unlike the evora which was a singular chassis. I4 has completely different sub frames as well
cool
Bro, if Todd doesn't own one of these in a year, its only because he couldn't sell cars fast enough to free up the garage space.
Paul forget the emira it’s ur German cars 😢
....which are sterile.
This or C8?
We actually compared them back to back as well as the Cayman GTS. You can find that film on our original /EverydayDriver channel. Thanks for watching!
@@TestDriveVideos I’ve watched all your videos. Well worth it. The channel is amazing.
