I hope you've fully recovered from your trip to the NEC Mr HubNut, you've had a lot to deal with in the last few weeks, stay safe and take of yourself.
Precisely the reason I've just replaced the space saver in my Fiat Panda with a full size spare. Full size 155/80x13, space saver 135/80x13, who thought that was a good idea? 🤷♂ I don't want to be on the motorway restricted to 50mph at night with only being able to do 50 miles.
I'm constantly amazed by how much of an effort and stress it is for Brits to do a 300 mile drive. I do a 900 mile trip from Waukegan, Illinois to Great Barrington Massachusetts with one over night stop. I used to do it in one 18 hour drive but I'm not in that much of a rush anymore.
Another nice look behind the scenes. The tire can just be repaired with a prop, as a car mechanic I have done that often enough (I drove with a prop in the tire for another 6 years), then mount that wheel on the rear axle.
Great look behind the scenes, really surprised you don't have a pump in your car. Oh for being able to put an inner tube in, instead of throwing away a perfectly good tyre.
Hi Ian thanks for your report's on the show great work, glad you got home safely with both car's,,,sad news about your old car, Bests regards to you all,
Nice shot of Foxanne. That tire with the nail can definitely be fixed. That is no problem to fix with a plug. I just did one of mine yesterday and it is holding up nicely. I had one of my tires on the last set with a hole that was on a similar spot and it was so big that it needed 2 plugs in it to seal. That tire was almost new and it lasted 57K miles. That is driving in the NJ, NY area where I live where Beirut is the only worst place for tires. If the plug bothers you, fix it and use it on the rear. Had a wonderful time watching your coverage of the event. Cheers mate.
Thanks for the "behind the scenes"; looks as if it was a great show, and lots of help available when needed...That shot of FoxAnne at the end there; she just looked so darn cheerful! Sorry about the Starlet...
An excellent blow by blow report on the show, most of us who go to such events don't see the preparation involved. Glad Betty got you home safe, 27mpg isn't too shabby for a 4.0 litre auto if we're honest. Sad about the Starlet, hopefully no injuries sustained in the collision. Home for tea and cosy family times, thanks for the upload.
Certainly a lot of nice people in them clubs there fixing stuff for you just because they love to fix things, kind of the sort of thing I like doing, times I've fixed stuff for people I like for nowt just because I enjoy fixing things, it's a nice feeling... :D
MPG for Betty is not bad considering she is a 4.0 litre 6. I saw the flexi pipe on the seat of Foxann filmed by another channel not knowing she was properly repaired, so kind of them to do that and repair her fibreglass body! I do hope you have recovered from the NEC, I am sure it was great meeting people as well as being stressed about Betty's tyre. Cannot await what is next with Betty and the rest of your fleet!
Agree about the fuel consumption. For most of my life, 30mpg/9l per 100km has been standard fuel consumption (even for a Triumph Herald in quite good condition, which I found disappointing). These young people are spoiled by modern cars.
@@michaelwright2986 I always thought anything over 20 MPG in a Ford Falcon is good. The 4.0 Falcon motor's economy is very load sensitive. 27 achivable with no passengers and steady driving and it drops as the load comes on. Try one with a trailer, heaps of power at a cost. Take it from me I am in Australia and owned two Falcons
I have to agree. My first experience of that show - I came on Saturday - and it was great fun. I did find myself talking to a lot of owners, which was lovely, and obviously chatted to you, Steph, Matt then Mr Lloyd and the Retro Ratz (sounds like a band). There's a real sense of community and it feels like a badge of honour to wake up with a slight croak
Hello Ian glad NEC was good and I couldn't help but notice that grim hotel room. I have been going for years to both shows and the best and cheapest hotel is the Arden. Great breakfast, sauna, pool, jacuzzi and steam room with decent meals in bar at night also. Me and my twin brother stayed for £120 sheets Inc all the above..........apart from evening meal. Free parking also. Hidden gem
Having had in the last year, three screws or nails in my 19 inch car tyres, I've come to conclusion that the explosion of building projects after lockdown is causing a new hazard on the roads. Second conclusion is that the larger and more expensive the tyre, the greater the attraction to bits of metal. Two tyres were repairable thankfully.
James Holland, CHG Classics, what a guy. He helped me out on numerous occasions when I was travelling by Reliant Rialto. Being no more than twenty five minutes down the road from him made three wheeling pretty darned easy!
Incredible coincidence seeing the unfortunate accident with your old motor ( hope everyone is OK ) On a lighter note, please carry on the excellent revival of the Fox, maybe a more permanent paint job. A mini series with you learning along the way with us joining in doing a respray would be great content the little motor now deserves it after all the mechanical work - plus it would make a nice little car for Miss H to runaround in.
Ian thank you so much for all the show videos wonderfully Hubnut. Especially loved the interview what an extraordinary lady and car. My the road alway rise to meet your tires and the wind be at your back
You should add posters to the Hubnut shop. The picture of a low Foxanne at the end of this vlog would definitely find a place on one of my walls, as well as the red MGF phone box shot a while ago.
Fantastic "behind the scenes"! I've really been enjoying these moments from the show from Steph, Matt, and yourself! I'm surprised that you don't have a tyre repair kit in your travel-bag arsenal. Project Farm ran a comprehensive test of such repair kits; it may be worth getting a couple; one for the garage and one for your "to go" travel bag. (Edit: and a foot pump of course!)
Worth trying tyre goo. I punctured like that a week after new tyres and a can of goo kept the tyre going until it was worn out. The goo is not as bad as some say!
RE: the tire, find someone with a modern Ford. Borrow the temporary mobility kit from their car. It's a glorified 12 volt air pump with a tire sealant pump. Shoot some tire sealant into the tire, and you'll probably be good to go until you replace the tire. Good luck 👍
Talking of tyre pumps, I have just bought a new one. I can't remember who made it but the nice thing is its powered by a rechargeable battery with the added option of using the cars 12v supply as well. It comes with a mains charger and it looks a bit like an electric drill but where the chuck would be is the hose. So hopefully no more having to plug on in and have the cable being re routed through the car when getting at all four tyres in turn.
Foxanne looks like a very classy lady with that grille badge in the photo! Glad you had a good time there. Annoying about the tyre, especially when it was a new Continental. Absolutely typical.
My wife's car had a slow leak. I had to pump it up at least once a week. Never did find where the leak was. Bought some Inflate 'n' seal and that fixed it. Maybe that would save you having to buy a new tire. Then again, maybe the nail is in the tread and not the sidewall.
This is where a tyre plug would be quick and useful. I’ve used them with great success over the years and it doesn’t require the wheel to be removed. It does depend on being able to actually find the leak of course. A plug would have worked perfectly instead of that nail. We won’t go into the legality of it, sufficient to say that when something works, it works and the worse that could happen is that it leaks again at some point.
A friend of mine who has toured everywhere on motorbikes swears by “Silly String” … jam some through the hole and you get a thousand mile repair.. even on a loaded up bike.
That was sad news regarding the Starlet. Otherwise the show looked great. I am toying with visiting The Cars in Strawberry Park at the Statfold Barn Railway as they open the show to any age vehicle, plus they have their trains running as well.
A nail in your tyre and a sore throat, not bad. Aniseed Fisherman's Friends, not quite as severe as Original. Try them. Good tip on the water flask btw. And we thought fuel was dear!
Foxanne looks quite rakish ( pun not intended) lowered at the front like that! A big comfy car that can easily overtake at open road speeds is a great thing to cover miles. isn't it?
Great little behind the scenes a quick question do you actually get time to have a proper look at cars on display or you just see them as you film them? I am guessing you might get a better look before the show opens each day.
The hotel room looks like an Ibis Budget. One hotel that I find perfectly sufficient for a business stop but which my better half just will not contemplate.
Fabulous video, Ian. I love Betty, but that fuel consumption is crazy. Matt would use less in his Crown Victoria with the 4.6 litre V8. First thing I would start with is the O² sensor(s). They get dirty and make the car run rich, but no fault code because they are still working. The kicker about that petrol consumption is that I did better than that in every one of my four Torino Birds. I had a pair of 78 and a pair of 79 Thunderbirds. Both 78s had the supposedly dreadful 351M, which is the bastard child of Ford engines, back up with 3 speed automatic gearbox rs without overdrive and without locking torque converters. On a run like you just did, they would have done more like 30 mpg, or somewhat less than 10 litres per 100 kilometers. I will be kind and not tell you what my one of one 89 Mercury Grand Marquis with the 5.8 litre Windsor engine used. It would make you cry!
It was fabby to meet you Ian and have a blether on the Friday. The Hub Nut mug is used daily and the coffee somehow tastes just that wee bit better from it too.
