I don’t really understand why Mashiba’s camp was so opposed to a former would ranker (also friend of the gym) coming in and offering FREE good natured sparing and assistance. Is that like a cultural pride thing?? I wonder if American gyms are the same way?
It’s specifically because of the time left until the big fight. Right now mashiba is in don’t fuck around mode. If someone came to him asking to spar who 1. Was well known to have quit being active 2. Wasn’t known to be a southpaw and 3. Was 2 weight classes under you can kind of see why him coming and offering to spar on the face of it would have been asinine. He may have been world level at one point but if you quit actively fighting for a couple years then the natural thing to expect would be a decline in ability. But this is Ippo so he just needed time to hone his abilities and become greater than he ever was.
