Luke 7:36-50
Introduction
Love Much because You have been Forgiven Much
I. The Characters of the Story
Simon, the Pharisee
The Prostitute
Jesus, the Prophet
v.40 - “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he answered, “Say it, Teacher.”
Simon may have called him Teacher, but he certainly was not a true learner.
II. The Contrast of the Story
v.41 - “A certain moneylender had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty.” Two Debtors - One in debt a lot (500) and the other in debt a little (50)
v.42 - “When they could not pay, he cancelled the debt of both now which one will love him more…”
Forgiven debt - What makes it so generous is anytime somebody forgives a debt they themselves incur that debt in full. That debt is now mine. The cost is transferred to me. I pay. To understand that is to get an insight into the forgiveness of God.
v.43 - “Simon answered, ‘The one, I suppose, for whom he cancelled the larger debt. And he said to him, ‘You have judged rightly.”
V.44-46 - The 3 ‘Buts’ - A Humiliating Contrast
1) You gave me now water for my feet BUT she has wet them with her tears and dried them with her hair
2) You gave me no kiss BUT from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet
3) You did not anoint my head with oil BUT she has anointed my feet with ointment
v.47,48 - “Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven - for she loved much. But he who is forgiven little, loves little. And he said to her, your sins are forgiven.”
Great love comes from great forgiveness!
How can we love Jesus passionately:
1) We must realize how great our debt is in God’s sight
2) We must realize our total inability to repay our debt
3) We must totally trust in Jesus and His grace to forgive our debt
“This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost.” 1 Timothy 1:15
v.49 - “Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, ‘Who is this, who even forgives sins?’
This is a great question for us today!
“And when he saw their faith, he said, ‘Man your sins are forgiven you.’ And the scribes and Pharisees began to question, saying ‘who is this who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?” Luke 5:20,21
III. The Conclusion of the Story
When we trust Jesus and our love grows, we will hear the words of Jesus that he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
GO - Continually go in peace, she could now do because she had Peace WITH God
The promise for you and me today! We have peace with God because our faith has saved us!
