That's what would have been done in the good old days, pre-Tory austerity. They would have been processed, the wrongs uns sent packing and the accepted ones allowed to work and pay taxes etc. Now they are confined, at great expense, with no prospect of being processed and for what reason? To stir up anger which is then deftly redirected at the very asylum seekers who are being failed by this useless government. It's a great distraction from all the other failures and corruption scandals the Tories are involved with. Reading the comments here 90% have fallen for this trick, like a load of sheep.

That was my first reaction too! Doesn't take a genius to realize these invaders are just taking the p and getting guidance from dodgy lawyers and probably care4calais on how to get around the home office strategy. I hope the government realises that they are making a mockery of the UK and turning us into an international laughing stock. The home office needs to get very tough very quickly. When they arrive on our shores, which is illegal entry, they should be interrogated immediately, before they get the chance to find a dodgy lawyer, and unless they can provide immediate and convincing evidence of their eligibility for asylum they should be deported to Rewanda, unless they reveal their actual county of origin. In which case they would be deported there. If anyone turns up at an airport without documents or false documents, there is no argument, they would be refused entry and be deported, why is this any different? Even as it stands this country will be in deep sh1t with this problem, for decades, and it's becoming worse every day, not only financially but socially.

He probably has, but that makes no difference, as the absurdity of his position on migration is clearly evident to anyone who has worked in an underdeveloped country. There are millions of people in the third world who'd love to live in the first world for the money and easier life, but often they don't understand the work of the vast majority of people in the first world to advance their nation. I'm talking about the ancestors of the majority working class who worked long hours or starved or were homeless throughout centuries past. They were working for their children, relations and neighbours not for strange people from thousands of miles away. This is how the people of any race or culture work. It shows the utter ignorance of human nature to expect us to take foreign people and feed, cloth and house them. Are we all racist for being like that? Yes, we damn well are and should remain so.

@Wildfox01 It has taken 40+ years of Tories to make the housing crise we have. The start was selling councial homes (right to buy) and allowing banks to give mortgages (previously only building socities could). The combination has seen house prices rocket, rents rocket - but the Tories are bankers and landlords - so they are raking it in.

As much as so many asylum seekers want to stay in the UK, they still need to go through a vetting/security process, which includes limiting their freedom, until they have been green lighted as genuine. This country should not be considered a soft touch for illegals and I do think we need to get very stern with the French government, who seem eager to maintain little resistance when it comes to stopping the channel crossings from their end! The UK government should have the right to deport illegals back to their homelands, if deemed not genuine. Of course, regarding those who served and helped our armed forces in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere, they should be given priority for care and provision, as well as fast tracked citizenship!

But if this 'obstacle' is removed, do they actually think about what would happen with these 1000s of people joining the society every month? Legal or not, where are they going to live? How are they going to earn money? What about the healthcare? NHS is understaffed (ironically, mostly because we made people who worked here legally leave the country and almost impossible for them to come back to the UK with the new points system), in most regions it's impossible to get dental care on the NHS even though we are paying for this. UK young people are struggling to get a place at college as loads of places are being taken by Ukrainian refugees who, unlike the home kids don't have to meet any entry requirements. The reason 75% of claims are granted isn't because they are genuine asylum claims. It's because the system is overwhelmed, immigration lawyers do all they can to slow down the process and eventually rely on the claim that the applicant has been in the UK so long it would be unfair to return them to their (supposed) home country. The Home Office is in a terrible state and can't retain staff, Border Force is again going through contract changes that are causing officers to leave in droves. It all plays into the hands of the lawyers, migrants, people smugglers and a government who simply doesn't care.

    0829 am 12th August,
If Steve Smith is so concerned about these scrounging so called asylum seekers instead of wasting time and money at the high court complaining that a barge is not suitable enough for them why doesn't he pay for their accommodation along with all the other do gooders instead of our tax which we pay to keep them here in hotels all around Britain.

So when these people supposedly escaped from their appalling situations into France, they didn't think 'Thank God! We're in a safe country!', they thought, 'Oh I know, let's get into a tiny dinghy and cross the English Channel'. They have a strange definition of 'fear of water'. Even if they only became afraid after their voyage, no similarity between a huge barge and a dinghy.
