    OH MY GOD MAYUR SIR! you finally covered the most important topic about aquariums! The fish which is abused the most! The iridescent shark! I have sseen plenty of shops selling these sharks of 2-3 inches to amateurs who are just into the hobby and keeping a shark already fascinates them(tho it's a catfish) and then this shark they bring grows so big that they return it to the shop and the shop just literally dump them into sewers of any nearby well , mh heart literally aches for these beautiful active catfish, inspite of their true potential and beauty they are always always lookeed down on! A right sized aquarium might be an ideal home for them , but I doubt that wont be enough too! I guess the shops should've banned from keeping these species because they are real tank Busters but if one really has a big enough tank only then he should be allowed to house them! But hope so things get better for monster fish in india! And yes! THANKS FOR MAKING VIDEO FOR THESE BEAUTIFUL SPECIES

    Great video sir, love the bottom line to not keep them in small tanks nor to ever release them in our eco system however would like to share my 2 cents on the subject from whatever little I know. You did mention there are many varieties of pangasius cat fish but as many new hobbyists are also watching the video, We should not get confused between iridescent shark(Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) & Paroon shark/Giant pangasius(Pangasius sanitwongsei). What we locally get in the hobby in India are iridescent sharks, which are behaviourally very different from Paroons(rare/exotic/expensive/monster fish).
    The video is about iridescent sharks but on many occasions the footage/behavioural traits shown & discussed are that of Paroons. The image where the high dorsal fin is shown as reason for being called a shark in the hobby(at 0:37), is the image of a Paroon. Also the footage(at 10:30) of it gulping another fish, is a Paroon not an iridescent shark. Even though they are from the same family/Genus, they are different sub-species and is like comparing dogs(Canis lupus familiaris) & wolves(canis lupus). Iridescent sharks are not even 10% as aggressive as Paroons. Having kept both species, I know the difference in behaviour & diet is colossal. Paroons are proper monster fish/hunters/meat scavengers/tank busters that are carnivores and feed on fish, shrimps and crabs in deep water while iridescent are relatively more of gentle giants who are omnivores & prefer scavenging over hunting as they have very low protein requirements. Simplest visual difference between Paroon & Iridescent is that Paroons have long & curved pointed tip dorsal fins. A follow up video(iridescent shark vs paroon shark), would be great to help hobbyists correctly identify & differentiate between the 2. Cheers & much Respect 🙏

      Wonderfull explained Buddy!
      Even I was getting confused why the heck they are mentioning traits of paroon shark to that of iridescent shark, having cared for both of the species there is like mammoth difference between the two when it comes to aggressiveness, Paroons are born killers, Iridescent are gentle giants who love to mind their own business.

    Iridescent Sharks or Sutchi Catfishes
    (Pangasius Hypothalmus) usually don't feeds on other smaller fishes and are peacefull in nature. The predatory ones are called Paroon Sharks,they are seperate species and can be easily distinguished by their long and pointed dorsal fins.
    India has also native Pangasius and they are commonly found in Rivers of India and Bangladesh.Don't blame it, they are native variety which you commonly see in India's River systems. The native variety of India & Bangladesh is Pangasius Pangasius, it's tail becomes red as it grows up. It can grow upto 3 feet(Iridecent Sharks or Sutchi Catfishes on the other hand grows upto 4 feet and there is no red in tails).

  • @rohitmaddali

    Sir, I have an interesting tale to share. I remember, as a child I had a couple of pairs of this shark in my aquarium. I was quite fond of them and took great care of them (the best I could at that time, with my limited knowledge and pocket money). They were quite active and healthy, grew more than half a feet in just a few months. At that time, I only had a 150 liter aquarium and it was getting a bit too cramped for these fish. I couldn't afford to get a bigger aquarium so instead, I decided to release them in a natural pond nearby (keep in mind the pond is fairly big with some other small fish). A few years later, I went to check upon these sharks and was surprised to see them thriving in that habitat. They had grown in number, I could see many offsprings. And the older ones I released had grown to around 4 feet in size (which was most astonishing for me). I knew they could grow to 1 feet or a bit more as I had seen some in a few shops but never this big!

      please do not release pet fish into wild. They harm your local ecosystem.

    • @rohitmaddali
      @rohitmaddali 2 года назад

      @@boyscout8035 The pond I'm speaking of is not connected to any river or lake. Whatever threat they pose is only confined to that particular area which is about an acre wide. I was a child then with fixed pocket money, so I couldn't afford to buy a bigger tank. I thought the next best thing is to release them in there, instead of making them suffer in my small tank.

    • @boyscout8035
      @boyscout8035 2 года назад +2

      @@rohitmaddali the problem : 1) the pond you are talking about is (probably) accessible to the public whether it be a privately owned property or a public one. There are people (fishermen or a kid interested in fishes) who catch fish from one pond and transport it to a different one in hopes of stocking it with the new species of fish. This way it spreads. The people are not educated enough to understand how one invasive species can destroy an entire ecosystem.
      2) the pond must've had smaller indian species of fish or other creatures and plants (judging by "natural pond". Now they are under threat from this species.
      You could have euthanized them (it is simple, painless, easy and doesn't require an expert).
      Please avoid this in future. It is better to euthanize than to release them in the wild. I'd even say let them suffer but don't release them in a habitat they do not belong to. If you do, you might be bringing suffering to an entire well established ecosystem.

    • @rohitmaddali
      @rohitmaddali 2 года назад +2

      @@boyscout8035 I really appreciate your concern for our local eco-system, but I can assure you sir, no one goes fishing in that pond. (It's not even a hobby here as most people don't eat fish, and the few that do only eat river fish). So no, no one is taking them out of there. And about the second problem you mentioned; Yes, there were some small fish in that pond, prior to me adding those sharks. They are definitely at a significant threat with the introduction of a foreign species. But as I mentioned in my previous comment, the pond is not anywhere near a lake or river so there's no way they are getting out of there, even if there are heavy rains and floods. Whatever threat they pose is strictly confined to this area alone which is about an acre/acre and a half at most.
      Also, you're right, I could have euthanized them and I would if it was now, but I released them about 2 decades ago when I was an ignorant kid. It was the first and only time I had released pet fish into a natural habitat. So please don't worry, I never did that again, nor would I do so in the future.

    Sir...I have seen many of your videos...which are based on your very in depth knowledge in this particular field .Also your syphathetic approach towards these species .Generally this should not be considered as simple topic.In fact we are doing injustice to such species and keeping them in a small tanks like putting them in a Jail (it's ANDA CELL for iridescent sharks ) .I have my self changed my tank size for just 2 sharks over period of 9 years .Present size is 6 feet x 20 x20 .They have grown over 16 , 17 inches now this is again proving to be a jail for them since can't turn easily inside.Since by now they recognize people around them now there is attachment hence not releasing them in river since presuming their DOSTANA will come to end and people may catch them for eating or they can't get their food which by now they are habituated. No aquirium shop wants to take these big fishes I had tried with them.They told me to throw them in pond or river which I could not imagine to do so. I tried with few of resorts and hotels but got information that they some time use these fishes for preparing food stuff hence did not dare to leave them there also.My request to you since you are authority in this field please instigate new HOBBYIST JUST NOT TO BUY THESE FISH AT ALL .Because in future the problem will definitely going to arise, which is my personal experience , they need very big tanks which general people/ hobbyist can not afford and they don't have the place also to keep such gigantic tanks.I once again request you since your word has some respect amongst HOBBYST Please appeal them not to by these fish at all.Also may request you to stop selling /promoting this particular iridescent sharks to hobbyst since there many other small aquirium fishes for hobbyist.Its big message sorry for this, but wanted to share my personal experience and intention to stop cruelty with innocent living beings for sake of our joy. I may appeal all the general or medium class hobbyists NEVER EVER buy this iridescent sharks you will repent after 10 years .

  • @rockfella27

    As per your insight on this famous fish I don't think any hobbyist should be keeping these fish at all. Minimum 4 each needing 1000 liters so we really a very big tank for a bunch of these. You're so right about ich about it. I've seen a lot of shops with all clean healthy fish but these will have ich all over. Now I know! Thx Mr. Dev.

    Secondly..as described correctly..by yourself....these iridescent sharks once got scared for any reason they move so speedily and with enormous power and aggression inside the tank you feel like they may jump and come outside the tank or break the tank itself. If you witness by chance there aggression even any body will get scared .Hence keeping any other fish inside with them is incorrect.They have in aggressive movement, unknowingly unintentionally or accidently striked and killed my two big size kois kept with them in same tank previously which I could witness coincidently. This is the another problem with this species.Even I had to change the side filter twice after their striking on side filter.

    Mayur sir,
    Abhi news channel pe aaya hai ke Mumbai ko pani dene vale 3 dam hain un tino me bade bade sakar fish paye ja rahe hain. Jo actually kuchh kaam ke nahi hain hamare tank me, aapne bhi bataya tha.
    To vo fish BMC ne dam me chhode hue acche fish ko kha rahe hain.
    So, please aapki taraf se agle video me uske bare me bhi 1 minit boliye.
    Taki koi sakar fish dam me na chhode. 🙏🏻

      @MayurDevAquascaper  2 года назад +1

    I only recently got into this hobby, only just finding out about this fish. Never paid attention to it, My dad bought this fish 8-9 years ago on a whim and realizing what kind of fish this is and how it has been living in our aquarium(86 gallon)for all those years, make me extremely sad.
    Please suggest what should I do ? As you said, this is an invasive species and I asked my local aquariums and they said they just release the fish in the local rivers.
    The fishes have been taken care of quite well exception being the tank size.
    Im very conflicted on what should I do next ?

    • @MayurDevAquascaper
      @MayurDevAquascaper  6 месяцев назад

      You can give it to a zoo or any animal park in your area, also return it to your local shop keeper or a friend that has a large pond
