  • Here is the set design and construction for Brighton High School Musical's production of Disney's High School Musical.
The auditorium was opened with the school facade and steps set. The main set pieces were 7 double sided, rolling walls with lockers and school scenes. These are pretty versatile, and they were used to set multiple classrooms, hallways, locker room, and the cafeteria. We got a good deal on actual lockers from a local sports complex that was renovating. Some lab tables and a few school desks on casters rounded out these scenes.
The gym scene consisted of a set of angled bleachers (that were fun to build!), a large backdrop, and basketball hoop. For the "Get your head in the game" number, we rigged a basketball drop using some electric latches that were controlled from the light board.
The theatre scene was pretty simple with a large, half painted tower and ladder and a few other pieces.
The most complex piece for this show was a baby grand piano that sat on a platform that rotated and lifted it. The grand piano was obtained for free from an estate sale, and we removed the sound board to lighten it. We used a 1500lb pneumatic motorcycle lift and geared "tarping" motor. Air tanks were hidden under the 8'x8' platform along with the motor battery and remote-control system.
Every night after rehearsal, we had to wipe down and return the cafeteria tables to the school cafeteria for use the next day!
Overall, this was a fun show to do, and the kids really enjoyed it.
