Wow, our systems and gardens are VERY similar. Found your video cuz I'm probably going to change mine from a gravity fed to a ground based pump system next spring. Super cool, thanks for posting. Very helpful.

My current system is gravity and I just don’t have the pressure. Definitely going to look into the pump.

I am impressed. This is the first really sustainable system I see that integrates rain water harvesting plus its solar pump that feeds a drip system which feeds raised beds for auto consumption. Chapeau!

I am such a doofus! I was wanting to know the level in my rain barrels as well, but I was going down the route of cutting a hole in my entry barrel and sealing in a clear plastic view port. This will be so much faster, less hassle and probably more accurate. Thanks mate!

Strap the view tube to the side of first tank and make the algae cover a flap you can just pull back to look, much better ease of use, and you can leave it capped off, or use a mesh cap for venting

If less than 1% of all home owners did this the fresh water saved ,not to mention the cost of said water ,would be astounding!
Btw I've been doing this with my a/c condensation from attic airhandler as well. Very rarely do I have to get my hose out to water my flowers ,nd edibles.
Drip irrigation nd solar pump,is a great bonus!! Very impressive!! Sight glass just over the top..WOW
    THANX for the information.

Sweet setup, I will definitely be building such a system. Your sight tube comment about algae growing gave me an idea. Put a shut valve with quick connect at the base and the quick connect nipple on the clear tube. When you shut the valve and disconnect the tube the water runs out and the tube can stored indoors.

Great video. I especially like the level sight idea. Might be able to find a float style level gauge that will incorporate the same idea. I use Ktek style level gauges at worrk that use two tubes essentially. One that has the actual liquid level with a magnet that floats on top and the other has triangular shaped pieces of metal that turn as the level goes up and down.
I have an ibc tote that is 275 gallons. We have almost filled it once so far this summer but a lack of rain has really been a damper. I have the downspouts on both sides of my garage connected together that lead to a drain tile to pour into the top of the tote. In the lid, I have a screen covering the entrance so it catches bugs and debris. I have to clear it out once in a while but it's a gairly efficient system.

You've probably discovered by now that you need an overflow hose in your first barrel. Rain sometimes come much faster than the subsequent barrels can fill.

@@tunerdadtunerdad7927 A large enough volume of water will be constricted by the size of the transfer pipes.
In theory, you are right, the water in the barrels should rise at the same rate. In reality, that's only the case *if* the volume of the transfer pipes is equal to the volume of incoming water. Being that those little pipes are narrow, and the water is coming from an entire roof, it's quite plausible that the first rain barrel would fill much quicker than the others in a deluge.

@@tunerdadtunerdad7927 There's a 4 inch pipe going in. There's what looks like a 1.5 inch pipe exiting that tank into the manifold. A 4" pipe can do 240 gallons per minute, gravity fed. A 1.5" pipe can do 35 gallons per minute. Even if that were a 2 inch pipe going into the manifold, that can only do 55 gallons per minute.

    • @TexasOrganicGardening

Yes overflow in first barrel would be better, especially in a heavy rain. When we have a very heavy downpour it overflows out of the top of the first barrel when rain comes in faster than it can move into other barrels. For normal rain it works OK, but if i did it again I would put overflow outlet in first barrel. Good observation.

Someone I knew had a similar system, but he used syphons (instead of the manifold at the bottom) arranged radially with the each barrel being fed from the first barrel. This avoided the need for drilling the barrels and you could easily remove one barrel just by removing the syphon.
