A great video, love the insights and annecdotes while you're painting. I have just bought my first Hake brush, so I'm excited to use it and have fun with it. As you rightly say, a lot of enjoyment can be had while practising to develop the techniques. The more practice the better the skill; it just needs time, patience and persistence. I like your style of video demonstrations, so I've subscribed immediately 😀
I just got a hake after painting in watercolor for 15 years. Skies are my favorite, and I want to focus on masterful skies, and I figured the hake is the way to go.
TY Joe. I just found the Large brush style . TY for the tips on the Hake . I am doing my best with it and wow yeah the water control is tough to get used too .
Nicely done Joe. This will save some people from wanting to throw their Hake brush out the window. I know a couple to share it with who want to do just that.lol. This is also a big part if why my sister does acrylics but I do watercolor. I love the challenge . Any painting hobby is a good thing imho.
So glad you sent your photo to Dave Usher. I've been following him and love his work. You really gave a fantastic explanation of the water and the Hake. I have been practicing for a few months. Will start using a towel. Happy to have found you. Happy painting 😉
Amount of water is crucial! Thank you for the visual answer. Also Liron has a good video and info from Joshua Elek about this same issue. Love what you did and that you also said that if you love a challenge, this is the medium for you! That is exactly why many of us enjoy it. It is the challenge and the joy - not the final product or sales or honor.
Joe, I've got my hakes and Fabriano 11x14 studio paper and I'm gonna give it a go in the morning. Excited, yet apprehensive at the same time. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for your demos and info!
This would have likely been just the Ron Ranson pallet. Ult blue, raw sienna or yellow ochre, Payne’s grey. Lemon or cad yellow hue, burnt umber, aliz crimson and light red
Thanks for the useful tips. I'm starting with this brush, not easy to handle in the beginning but once you get it it's amazing what you can do with it. Could you please introduce your palette ? the pigment you are using and their place on the plate. This will help to get the mixes for the biginner that I am. :-) It's a shame that you don't get for followers, I suscribed and shared your channel in France, the ones who understand english will appreciate. We are not getting as many videos in french as there are in english
Thanks, Joe. New subscriber. Directed to you yesterday from Dave Usher and your challenge. I immediately recognized your photo from intelligent comments you've left on other sites. This lesson is the clearest explanation of the subject that I've seen. You have a terrific, regular guy, down to earth presentation. Very informative. Very enjoyable. Killer intro music. 🖒🖒
Terrible Thom thank you very much for your nice comment, it encourages me to keep pushing forward when I read that others enjoyed or are inspired by what I’m doing. I’ve gotten so much joy from this medium that I want to help others to find and enjoy it like I have.
You paint mostly with a dry brush, except for the initial washes, am I right? Sometimes I could confuse oil as the medium in some of your paintings. Less water gives somewhat more control over watercolor paint. You mix colors and make mud and still it looks awesome
I like to push the watercolor to it’s limits. But one thing to remember is that with the hake brush there is always water on the brush so it looks like straight paint.
Hey Joe, i have a weird question about the hake you're using. Could you tell me what the length is of the hairs on your brush? I know the size of the brush but I've noticed that the length of the hairs seems to vary from brand to brand. It oooks like 1.5cm. am i wrong? Pleaee do tell me...🙏 Thank you
Do you mean Brand to brand or brush to brush? I’m sure they vary a little if you’re dealing with a goat hair natural product plus the bristles wear too.
SantaSkip Knows you will! The more you practice the more it will be the way you want but don’t fight the water just let it happen and see where it goes.
@@joemenzaart I also have a RUclips channel Joe. It's called, "santaskip knows" I will be adding paintings, cooking food(mostly chili) and a few dyi jobs as well.
So very true! In the beginning there was very little traffic to my RUclips channel. Now I upload a video a week and I do it on the same time and the same day (Tuesday at 7am) and now I have 85 videos. One has 2300 views and another 1600. I get lots of regular traffic day an night. I believe consistency is the name of the game. Keep going! It take a while. Look at lots of other peoples work, comment lots. Let people know you are subscribing to them and they will subscribe back. Anyways, don't give up!
Thanks. Not giving up. I have done other channels. One video I had a while back had over 100k views. I had another channel a few years back that had a couple of hundred subs. I know you have to be patient and promote so I will keep chugging along.
Thanks, Joe....great to hear and see you paint. I have a love/hate relationship with the hake....I'll keep at it.
. 300 paintings sounds gettable. Tremendous ideas, well done, thanku
Thanks!
Great video!
T hanx Joe, water content very helpful 👌🍒
this was fun + learned something new so thank you!
Thank you I enjoy the hake. I also enjoyed you using a card to scrape paint . I’d love a video on that if you’re not done one yet please
Thank you, I’ve done a few, this one seems to be the most popular Fast And Loose Watercolor Scraping Rocks

Thanks Joe, that's exactly what I needed to know - water control and practice, practice, practice! I nearly gave up on the hake.
Your a great teacher, Thank you.
This is immensely helpful, Joe. Thank you very much!

Wonderful video. You make it look so easy. I’ve been struggling. I have a hake but haven’t used it. I’m definitely going to try this technique.

Thank you for your feedback and thanks for watching!
Joe I'm living your videos! What's the difference between a Hake brush and a regular flat brush? Is it the amount of water it will hold?
Hake brush is typically natural like goat hair and holds more water.
You paint mostly with a dry brush, except for the initial washes, am I right? Sometimes I could confuse oil as the medium in some of your paintings. Less water gives somewhat more control over watercolor paint. You mix colors and make mud and still it looks awesome

Lindo! !!
That is my problem, water control. Hopefully I can get better as time goes on.

Are you using rough or cold press?
Cold press fabrication studio watercolor
What size is your hake brush?
I use the large and the medium

Nice video Joe! I also make art tutorials. I have liked and subscribed. Let's try to support each other.
Rod Bergeron thanks! I subbed back you have a lot of videos I’ll be busy with those for a while 😀👍
Thanks Joe. I will definitely stay in touch. I do a video a week and it is working out really well for me. Keep doing what you do!
Thanks Rod, that is what I was doing originally but I found I have such low views and sub count I feel like it's been somewhat discouraging.
