A very unusual machine as I've never seen one before. The closest thing to it would be a swather used for cutting oil seed rape to let it ripen and dry before putting it through a combine harvester.
Yes, that is pretty much the same machine, it'll just have a different front on it. This is more like a mower front to help reduce seed loss when cutting grass seed. This machine will swap over to swath a lot of other vegetable seed crops too.
As well as being used on NZ dairy, sheep & beef, cropping, deer, goat etc farms, NZ grown ryegrass and clover seeds are part of the NZ Seed export sector which exports to more than 60 countries, being worth a total of US$171million (2023). (NZ ryegrass and clover seed exports making US$159 million (2023), the main part of the total export sales).
