  • Across our state and nation, Buncombe County Schools is recognized as a leader in providing social and emotional supports for students. The Compassionate Schools model demonstrates a framework for understanding the connection between behavior, brain-based research, and academics.
    “By understanding the impact of adverse childhood experiences and chronic stress on the brain, we can teach skills that better prepare our students to respond appropriately to stress,” explained Mr. David Thompson, Director of Student Services. “We also equip our teachers with tools to reconnect students to active learning and problem solving. Our ultimate goal is to have resilient students with the skills to be successful no matter their circumstances.”
    The video production below highlights this important work and was debuted at the January 11, 2018 Board of Education regular meeting.
