And you are a good father, Al. Met Jimi in San Antonio in 1967, spent couple hours with him. Yes, he was very quite, soft spoken, exactly the opposite of most his music. Hah. Still miss him.
I visited Jimi's grave in Renton WA about 1973...I was a big fan, having seen the first Experience tour in Philadelphia...I had Al's address when I visited Seattle then, but I decided that Al Hendrix didn't need a complete stranger knocking on his door. Remember: 'Honour your father and your mother'...Never forget that.

jabel hendrix l didn't know that I was related to the Hendrix Family until my father had told me in 1987 at the age of 25 as he was in his sixties,in the state of Pennsylvania in the town of Erie,Pa. As I was born five days after jimi himself was honorably discharged from the military and unfortunately passed away two months after my 8th birthday, in (1970) and as my grandmother who was a Hall but married into the Bassham family told me directely how her sister had married into the Hendrix family and was related by actual blood, as I was told of family lines myself and know the lineages of family lines currently now at the age of 54 presently and had accidentally discovered you through watching a video about jimi's father Al Hendrix "to which I have never once seen before until today. Hopefully you'll get in touch with me as there are quite a few relatives to meet with in Erie,Pennsylvania as they've all are just discovering this fact themselves as well, and by the way cuz, did you know that the Hendrix family if directly related by blood to two different lines of actual royalty along with President Obama, and General Robert E.Lee, and if you don't believe me then just Google "Hendrix family Crests" and click on everything on the screen of your laptop and don't skip anything on the entire screen itself as there will be various kind's of Shields shown with various different kind's of family lines connected directly to the Hendrix family lines itself, along with a lot of other important information as well. And if I don't hear from you again, at least get in touch with your cousins within the Salter family lines in Erie as it'll be good for them to hear from distant family members again, and you take care of yourself and lots of love cuz!
I have my father to thank for allowing me to experience Jimi from a young age. He was lucky enough to see him live. I would listen to him religiously. I listen and play to a lot heavy music but I can't help but feel a relationship with his music.
Saw a documentary on TV of Jimi’s life and career. He was of course a phenomenal musician and seemed to have a quiet, peaceful personality. What touched me most in the programme was how he kept in touch, writing regularly to his Dad. His Dad must have kept all the notes and cards he sent. Very touching.
Just a normal kid in America who played sports, then served his country in the Army, then became a guitar legend. Always polite, respectful and people loved him.
For those not fluent in American History ! When Al got discharged from the Army, black veterans had to deal with discrimination and a lot of red tape in order to get their benefits. He struggled to raise his family as best as he could.
True story...my grandparents hired Al as their gardener in the early 70's. He lived close to them on Beacon Hill...Seattle. My grandparents weren't wealthy but my grandpa was a vet & was getting his benefits. So he was about helping other Vets
my stepdad's parents also hired Al for yardwork probably in the 50's and 60's. My stepdad still remembers his ma taking lemonade and sandwiches to him. Jimi worked with him I hear too.
Sad how Al Hendrix is talking about (the world's greatest innovator of groundbreaking guitar technique,) his son, heartbreaking on a human compassionate level. God Bless.
Jimi had a big influuence on me in my younger years. A very clever and dedicated artist, he was just so original and hard working, and obviously had an incredible innovative imagination.
A proud Dad, no doubt . Jimi Hendrix's reputation was that he was The Best guitarist of his time . People just, are not that social anymore. But, we should really have more time on our hands , to party and make music ! ❤
I was quite please to learn that he had the opportunity to reunite with Jimi's younger brother, Joe Hendrix, too. That was touching. RIP Jimi, Al, Lucille Hendrix.
God bless Jimi's Poppa and Mom'ma............ If there is any one Person that deserves to be remembered through the Rock'en Roll Hall Of Fame, is Jimi Hendrix!!! Thanks for sharing Al.
In one of his interviews, Jimi says something like "there was just something inside of me that had to come, it was gonna come out, there just happened to be a guitar right there"
setting fire to the accordion, humping the accordion, pulling it's squeeze box, licking all the keys, swinging it behind his back and playing it back to front cos his long fingers..making the accordion wheeze in to the microphone, pressing the chord buttons really really fast...
Like just about everyone else, I've always wondered what Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Holly would have added to our lives if they had lived. Because they died so young they left us with just a tease of their greatness.
What that man did in the last four years of his life musically will live forever as one of the greatest feats in music. God only knows what he might have created had he had more time.
For someone like him with his life experience, it must have felt so good to see his son become so successful. All his dedication in absence of Jimi's mother, must of really made him feel like he did a good job. Just sad they both couldn't have enjoyed it all together allot longer than they did. But so cool they did have the time they had.
I think you've been hitting the LSD to hard bro. Jimi Hendrix was not metal. Jimi Was Soul music, Blues Jazz, Funk,Rock maybe you could say Jimi Is the Father of Heavy Blues maybe but not heavy Metal. The Majority of the Hendrix collection is made up of Soft melodic Soulful music not brash over-driven soulless crap even when Jimi had a distorted tone you could still hear the definition in the notes and chords played. Metal is for the tone def and untalented with only a few exceptions the majority of Metal is crap and Jimi was far from being crap so trying to include Jimi in the Metal category is a complete insult. .
i was talking about sound.if it wasn't for his sound through 3-5 to maybe more marshalls none of that would ever exist.jimi didn't create all those other genres of music, but did incorporate them into his songs.insult? I doubt it.complment?definetly.metal is not bad music at all.there are a lot of crap rock bands as well as heavy metal,hip-hop.pop etc..
***** Metal is bullshit. You can not hear definition in the playing it is far to over distorted. I was an old school metal head in the 80's then one day I woke up. Any band that is labeled Metal that is worth anything what so ever is honestly not metal but in fact a hard rock band. If you can accomplish distortion with definition in the playing like Jimi did than it's not metal. Metal is slayer, cannibal corpse, and crap bands like them. I mean seriously listen to steppenwolf's Born to be wild you can actually hear definition in the playing then you have slayer and their over distorted bullshit version with no heart, no soul in the playing. All that junk is nothing but over distorted crap. Never said Jimi created any genre I was referring to his playing what Jimi played was Soul, Blues, Jazz, Funk, And rock no where near anything metal. Jimi played all the genres that acquire Heart and soul. lastly I would say about 90% of all music made today is garbage again I refer to what Jimi and all the greats had that the musicians of today honestly do not have nor do they accomplish and that is playing with all of your heart and soul. I highly doubt any new musicians will ever come along to change that. Now days it is all about playing for the dollar and that is sad.
***** You honestly would not want to know what all goes on behind closed doors when it comes to the Entertainment industry be it Movies, or Music. I know some things because I have made friends with several Country artist none of them big names but yes they are in the industry. It happens when you are bored and spend a lot of time at Dollywood in TN, great place by the way. I am an artist myself be it painting, dabbling in music, creating clothing, and other things. I believe that honestly we are in a modern day 1960's which is kinda kool and kinda shitty at the same time. I hope that musicians can come along to blow the doors off of the mainstream bullcrap of today but it would all be apart of the underground music scene. Cause right now the system is far to controlling and what ever the system wants so it gets. This is why The music we have today is so mind numbing it is due to the fact that it's all mind controlling junk for the system. But the good thing is that people are waking up and realizing this and it is a great thing to see. It is also great to put on the Hendrix, The Doors, Bob Dylan albums and listen to them as you watch the news cause once again the songs are fitting to the times we now live in now.
TheUnnamed I love the the bone crushing distorted riff of Opeth's The Leper Affinity. I love the creamy fuzz storm of Jimi Hendrix's Voodoo Child. I love the delicate violin solo lifted by a sweeping harp in the recurring intro of Rimsky Korzakov's Scheherezade. Point is, different people love different sounds. A lot of definition is lost in metal distortion, sure, but boy do i still love that sound. I assure you there is still plenty of musical talent in metal. Also just feel like saying that the fuzz kick-in of voodoo child is one of the heaviest things ive ever heard, haha
I am so grateful to have met Al twice in his home in Seattle,WA. The same year[2000] as this interview which was about 1 year after he had a stroke. I met him on April 26th and May 1, 2000.I could go on and on about the autographed picture of Jimi that he sent me, a few letters, a half dozen or so Christmas cards and Dozens and Dozens of phone calls. He was a very nice man. We also shared the same Sun sign[Gemini]! I am born the 4th of June and Al was born the 10th of June!I wish I could post the pictures of "US" on here.
Sat on that very couch of Al's in the wee hours of a distant morning, sharing a really nice bottle of single malt (and other party favors) with a small group of friends. Jimi was long, long gone by then, but I like that couch memory.
Well Tamara, I was fortunate to experience the same and even more! I spoke with him hundreds of times[1983 to 2002[his death] on the phone and I met him twice!! I live in the suburbs of Philly and flew to Seattle to see friends and to meet Al in 2000! I spent time with him twice on that same trip. I am forever grateful for the letters, Christmas cards we exchanged and of course meeting him and having the pictures for memories!

Such a different interview than the one with Jim Morrisons father. Jimi seems to love his son completely and truly enjoy his music. Where as Morrisons father cant even name a song hes heard other than, "Something about fire"...
Thank you Mr Hendrix. If you notice at a concert one could here a pin drop. All those vidios people acted like people not like now. What we need is Jimi to come back, cause as now he has never been replaced- can't be done... guess he was needed in heaven !
I called him on the phone in 1983! We talked many. many times from then until 2000 when he invited me in his house. He also gave me an autographed pic. of Jimi and numerous x-mas cards over the years! I wish I could down load the picture of us but this library computer will not display it!
Al Hendrix sounds like he was close to Jimi. Jimi Hendrix, wow...what an incredible talent and cool human being. I'm sure at the time Jimi's family was more shocked than supportive. Some people just ooze greatness no matter what they do.
What a nice man he is... The "Daddy sleeping" drawing almost made me cry. Being a "daddy" I can't help but compare this interview with Jimi's dad and the interview with Jim Morrison's dad. When he said that he didn't think he had a good voice and that it wasn't anything special... wow.
he had a troubled childhood and they grew up in poverty.imagine the pain of living for thirty two years after the death of your son.and he lost his wife early as well.just like the Presley family.great pain, tragedy and loss.so much death and loss all over the world!
he took after his father, soft spoken, and reserved. jimi let his guitar do all the talking. and those drawings looked pretty good, jimi got some talent from somewhere in that family.
Ive read some about jimi and al´s story, and I gotta say that parents make mistakes ( I have a 4yo daughter) and usually children dont figure how things really are in the inside. I use to blame my parents a long time for many things I had suffered until I became a father and these things were now becoming clearer. As if the fog had vanished out of the horizon of maturity. Certainly Al Hendrix wasn´t the best dad. but that he was the worst, doesn´t fit on the fact that jimi always sought after being in touch with him. I´m completely convinced that Jimi loved both his mom and dad. And so did them. Jimi Hendrix , btw, is my favorite artist ever. Never get tired of listening to, watching or reading about him. May he RIP.
Mmmh I tend to think he tried to love his father as respect for his mother and because he was the only parent he had left. Other than that, I'm not sure Jimi was that keen on him either, I mean they didn't see each other for 7 years at some point... Had Jimi not left Seattle, Al would have eventually completely discouraged him I reckon... I mean you read the biography and it's like Al was doing everything he could to prevent Jimi from making his own life better.

And all of a sudden she has it all, meaning, all of jimi's earnings, and copy rights, etc. i hear she's worth a 100 million $'s, and cut Leon Out, that all should have been Leon's but i did read somewhere recently, that Leon took that pos to court and won the estate back to him, where it belongs, i hope that's true, and he did leave a million $'s , to Jimi's children out of wed lock, James and Tamika, supposedly Jimi's dad made that settlement??????

I wish I could have met Al Hendrix and thanked him from the bottom of my heart for buying Jimi's first guitar.
Please read Room Full Of Mirrors.....he didn't buy his first guitar....this is all false. He didn't even want Jimi playing instruments.....and was physically abusive to Jimi. Al made his life hell. And because of his heavy drinking Jimi had no stability in his life.
Love these old photos of Jimmi and love his sketches. It seems that Jimi inherited his dads cool demeanor. Good to know that his dad really loved him and is so proud of him.
When I was a kid and first discovered Jimi, I didn’t really get the sadness of it all.
I wished he was still around, but I just didn’t get it.
Now I’m a dad, a guitar player of 35 years, and my life’s been affected by drugs & loss etc.
Now I get it, deeply.
I sure wish we had better ways, back then and now, to save people like Jimi.
Thank you Sir for getting him a guitare

Eh...whats special about being 6'1? I am almost 6'3 but it seems a strange thing to mention in a post related to how great Hendrix was.

Even as a small child, Jimi still had that same bright smile and glow. You can just see he is special.
And you are a good father, Al. Met Jimi in San Antonio in 1967, spent couple hours with him. Yes, he was very quite, soft spoken, exactly the opposite of most his music. Hah. Still miss him.

dmarkette1 Yeah what did you guys talk about?
In San Antonio. Not far from there
Thats good hold to that memory..
You owe us your story...if it is true!
Hearing him talk about his son while Little Wing played was really sweet.
Jimmys was not only the world's greatest guitar slinger he was a beutiful humble man and you can see he got that quality from his father Al.
A good friend of mine grew up in that neighbor hood in Renton and said him and his buddy's had rode their bikes over there to see the house Jimi grew up in and Al was out in the yard and even invited them in to see Jimi's bedroom..lol but yea you should of went over there you just never know.

Jimi was an adorable little boy. Gone too soon. RIP.
Little boy?....please, he grew up in a hurry, handled his life in a very focused, manly way....women found him adorable, I know, but he was not a little boy!

Was Al, Jimi's dad, really as lovable as he always seemed?
jabel hendrix l didn't know that I was related to the Hendrix Family until my father had told me in 1987 at the age of 25 as he was in his sixties,in the state of Pennsylvania in the town of Erie,Pa.
This makes me very emotional for some reason
Al is a very humble man...R.I.P Jimi.
So was Jimi.., i have never met anyone more humble!

Thanks Al Hendrix ,this is Wonderful
You can definitely see Jimi in this sweet gentle man.
For those not fluent in American History ! When Al got discharged from the Army, black veterans had to deal with discrimination and a lot of red tape in order to get their benefits. He struggled to raise his family as best as he could.
what's red tape?

God Bless.

Thanks for giving us Jimi, Al....

the greatest hard rock and heavy metal band is the jimi Hendrix experience.
they still remain the hardest and heaviest ever!
As a father, I find this very bitter sweet.
What a sweet man, he loved his son and was very proud of JImi
Wow! The love between a father and son is so heartwarming. Thanks Jimi, God's Blessings to both of you!

The "Daddy sleeping" drawing almost made me cry. Being a "daddy" I can't help but compare this interview with Jimi's dad and the interview with Jim Morrison's dad. When he said that he didn't think he had a good voice and that it wasn't anything special... wow.
Jimmi was quite a good artist. Seems that lots of musicians are good artists as well.
he had a troubled childhood and they grew up in poverty.imagine the pain of living for thirty two years after the death of your son.and he lost his wife early as well.just like the Presley family.great pain, tragedy and loss.so much death and loss all over the world!
Jimi was a good artist.
he took after his father, soft spoken, and reserved. jimi let his guitar do all the talking. and those drawings looked pretty good, jimi got some talent from somewhere in that family.
Poor man he never expected to out live his son🥺💔!
May he RIP.
He did, and he worshiped his mother..
Can we get some captions on this man?

He was a very proud papa, he wasn't perfect, but he did his best, raising Jimi and Leon..
You know James, i have heard good and bad, i knew Jimi, he was a very good friend of my then husband from the early to mid 60's, b4 i even met my then husband, Jimi was private very shy, a sweetie as far i was concerned, i tried not to ask personal ?'s he never said much, i was inclined not to ask personal ?'s unless it was in his conversation, i only knew Jimi from early to mid 69 to 70, 3 months before he left to go back to Europe, then we got the call he was dead a horrible day, we did know he had some problems, and was getting them rectified, my husband knew more than me.. The most humble person i ever met, i keep reading about his sad child hood, and it brings tears to my eyes, like now, i like to believe the best in everyone, because i did not know any of his family members..
I would like to add, even though i never knew his family members, this step sister of his, is truly a pos, and a piece of work!!! Jimi met her what 3 or 4 times??? And all of a sudden she has it all, meaning, all of jimi's earnings, and copy rights, etc. i hear she's worth a 100 million $'s, and cut Leon Out, that all should have been Leon's but i did read somewhere recently, that Leon took that pos to court and won the estate back to him, where it belongs, i hope that's true, and he did leave a million $'s , to Jimi's children out of wed lock, James and Tamika, supposedly Jimi's dad made that settlement??????
Thank you Mr. Al Hendrix!!!!!
