    I know you have limited time to present the history, but why didn't you include Jack Bogle? I thought he took the theory of indexing from academics to markets? What is your opinion?

      Hey Wallace, thanks for the note. Yes, Jack Bogle could have easily been a part of this history. I admire his principles and consistency. What is so interesting about Vanguard to me is that the management company is owned by the funds, instead of a for-profit firm. Not only does this lower costs but also removes conflicts of interest. Any time you can remove conflicts of interest, especially in the asset management industry, it's usually a good thing. ;) You can read more about it here: about.vanguard.com/what-sets-vanguard-apart/why-ownership-matters/ It reminds me of the open-source movement to software development, any time you can remove companies' ability to 'control' markets it's usually a good thing...but that's a topic for another day.     A pricing war did ensue. But now because of payment-for-order-flow, we have commission_free trading
