We mistakenly thought that they came from Egipt so we called them 'gitanos' (gipsy). Obviously they are not egipcian, they are romani, an indo-aryan group who moves from an area to another, as nomads. They also call themselves 'calé', wich means in their language 'dark' (kâlâ). So calé = gispy. They call non-gipsy people 'payo'. They got a great reputation as witches, with their famous 'gipsy curse' and all that stuff.
