Live between the eyes was in 1982.
In 1983 Rainbow released “Bent out of shape”.

Scalloping IS a speed thing. It forces you to use a lighter touch on the string (otherwise you go sharp). Lighter touch = more speed. The pressure vibrato is a bonus.

The reel to reel tape deck gave him the treble boost he was after. It became his signature sound. It was basically an eq.

Ritchie played #superstrats in 1974. He had jb john birch humbuckers same as tony iommi's in strats photos from manchester 74. As well as dimarzio dlx plus in strat's many photos from backstage 74. He had a many influence on evh as well.

Great for confirming the ES335 was used for Child In Time. I always thought that. It has a nice deep full sound especially on the album version where he does a pre solo that sounds awesome. Did he use it on And The Address as well? That sounds full too. Two of my favourite songs from Deep Purple along with Mistreated!!!!

He did. Google "Story of Ritchie Blackmore's Old and Forgotten Gibson ES-335 Guitar" and you will find an article on Ultimate Guitar where they go way in-depth on it.

He still has the guitar the luthier fucked up, had it redone with scalloped fretboard again. He says it's barely thick enough now to even work.

Maybe as an italian I misheard but... towards the end of the video the guy said that a sound like the one of Malmsteen is "warmer" than the Ritchie's one? Ahahahahah... is colder (especially after the early albums, and live in general), thinner, weaker... is just with more distortion/gain, like many guitarists solo or in bands from the early 80s on, but this not mean warmer or so.

The first strat Ritchie played was given to him by one of roadies from Eric Clapton, the neck was bent so Clapton most likely didn't want it.
Ritchie found in the beginning that the strat quite a handfull to play, much less forgiving than his Gibson, which he found to be to generic sound wise. He found the strat to be much more cutting and dynamic.

This story is false I guess Ritchie made it up sometimes he is known to do that but he broke a fret sliding the guitar across the speaker cab and they tried to fix it so there is no over zealous fret man lol great though also he could just buy a new neck either old or new to his liking and it could come pre scalloped nice

Don’t call the guitar repair guy an idiot! That’s rude! Ritchie should have told him that the scallops were intentional, who would have thought it , ?

Ritchie could have just replaced the neck altogether after killing that luthier.

@@chrismorgan7494 Pretty sure there wasn't a whole lot of extra strat, or tele for that matter, necks laying around? Why do you think there's soo many stories over the years of famous axe men trading for, or aquiring thier buddies guitars out of nessesity. If you think about it, alot of the most sought after, collectable guitars that are still out there being played today we're handed down or sold to them. Hell nowadays the relic crowd pays a premium for a brand new guitar that's "worn in"? The world's gone mad!

You can hear Ritchie tell the story himself on youtube where he goes through his guitar collection with his missus (he said when he got it back he actually redid the sandpaper job but the neck is now too thin and he doesn't use it much anymore)
