  • A brief explanation of resistor trimmers, coding, and how to decode the resistance value or measure the resistance of the trimmer. There are many types of resistor trimmers for printed circuit boards or PCB's. I will show you how to mount and solder two types of resistor trimmers on a printed circuit board including some suggestions on how to prevent the device from falling out or moving around while soldering. The tutorial is well suited for the electronic / electrical technician, technologist, engineer, trades person, or home hobbyist that has no experience with electronic proto-typing. This video would be especially useful for the person assembling an electronic kit for the first time. Please watch the additional videos using the DMM, other test equipment, and on soldering techniques.

    Nice video!
I have a Bourns 3386 single turn, side adjust trimpot (the blue colour ones). I have two questions
    1. I cant find its max resistance..on top it is printed "100" one way and "116N" below it the opposite way. What does that mean? 10 Ohms or 100 Ohms?
    2. The 3 pins on it are side by side. If I want variable resistance, as per your video I should connect to first two pins? And if I want max resistance, then I should connect to 1 and 3?

      1) I'm thinking the 100 stands for 100 ohms. When in doubt, measure the resistance across the outer two terminals.
      2) You are correct. Variable resistance will be from terminals 1-2 or 2-3. Fixed or max resistance across terminals 1-3.
