    I think you ladies also have something special where let’s say you guys read less books, I still want to hear about any podcasts you listen to, maybe a documentary you like, home making, etc. Keep branching out and don’t burn out.

      Ariel and Raeleen did that this year and it’s been fun listening because their choices are way more intentional.

    Yesss to StoryGraph! TBH it was an easy switch for me - supporting the evil lord bezos vs supporting a black female owned business. Also I like that StoryGraph feels less ‘competitive’ in the challenge space and has really interesting insights and data for your reading habits

      January 1st can't come fast enough because Storygraph is calling!

    I moved to The StoryGraph earlier this year and I really appreciate its features. When you rate a book, you can specify the book's mood, pace, and focus easily without writing a full review. I personally appreciate the AI that looks at your profile and preferences and tells you whether a book you're looking up is a good fit for you at that moment [or whether it has triggers or themes that might put you off].
    Eerily, I also track my reading in a spreadsheet and have a max. reading goal for 2025🌻😅

    i definitely need maddie’s spreadsheet like girl please be honest with us i’m sooo curious 😭 im only 12 minutes in and loving this episode already. i also have so many things i want to change for 2025 in terms of reading goals and so far, ive agreed with kristen that i also want to focus on one series at a time and taking a breather after to really soak up the world ive been in instead of jumping into new books or series immediately afterwards

      @ my reading goal is 70. i’d like to set a goal of 2 classics (i haven’t read any since high school), read 3 non-fictions (i’m still on my first memoir of this year 😅), get my physical tbr to 15 books, and read more books with diverse main characters. what about you??

    • @Bookswithcharlotte
      @Bookswithcharlotte 2 месяца назад +1

      @@rebekahriley434 ohh they are good. I haven’t read a classic since school and would like to try and read more. I’m mainly a romance reader and want to try to step out of my comfort zone. And my last one is to focus on my social media too, like sharing my reviews ❤️

    When you said breaking people up, I thought Homewrecker! You're wrecking the TBR! Also I'm so glad that you're finding a little freedom in the MF family. It brings us so much joy to have a community like this. ❤ My biggest goal for 2025 is to have grace with myself and not pressure to read things at a certain pace or read a certain number. Just bc I'm reading slower or less doesn't mean I'm not having a blast with what I'm reading. 😊

    • @Krisandmads

      Yes!! So much freedom in letting go of the pressures of reading goals, it is a great feeling!

    When your hobby becomes the basis of your job, the various pressures that come with that can really mess with balance and enjoyment factors. Putting the rules and intentions into 2025 that you are sound great. Burn out is so so so real. I made a career shift 3 years ago because while I loved the outdoors and science, I was working in a field that was making me hate it what I was previously very passionate and excited about it.
    2025 I’m going to try again with my goal of 1 non fiction book a month (I only did 1 this year oops) because there are genuinely good nonfiction and I want to get some deep dives on topics.
    I also want to go through my tbr because it’s about 130 books and some have been on there for years that I think I’m a different reader now and won’t actually enjoy. So some pruning needs to happen.
    Here’s to a great 2025 in books! 🎉

    • @Krisandmads
      @Krisandmads  2 месяца назад

      Yes yes yes to all of this! I love the pruning idea because it's so easy to feel like the tbr is so long, when in fact there are way fewer books that we are actually stoked about!

    I love this time of year when people start posting reading goals videos, especially reflecting on the previous year.
    Also yes! Join Storygraph! I moved simply because I really wanted to be able to rate books half stars and, even though it was a little adjustment, I never regretted switching. I personally really like the monthly wrap-up and being able to join challenges/buddy reads.
    Also, since joining there's been so many updates. I follow the creator/developer for her updates on what's coming next, she even does polls to see what people want.

    As a follower of your many social media outlets, I would love to have your honest to god opinions. That’s why I follow you guys. From hearing that you rate things differently to keep a certain “standard” or because you are afraid of being “negative” makes me doubt if I can trust what you are saying about the books. I love you guys and I know that if you ever rate a book at a lower star does not equate you being malicious or spreading negativity. As a follower I would like to be able to say “oh, Maddie/Kat liked this book so I know I will like it because we have the same taste in books.” At this current time I feel that I can no longer do that. I will continue to support you guys because I love you guys and your content and I feel that I don’t get a review like you give from anyone else. I hope that going forward you won’t be afraid to be more authentic with your thoughts an opinions.

      Hey there! Thanks for this feedback! Appreciate it so much! And off the bat, I am more than happy to share my personal spreadsheet. 😅 it’s not private or secret, so much as just very detailed for my personal use, but if the masses want it they can have it!
      But more importantly, please know that our ratings and opinions are always honest! But a rating is based on many factors. Is the rating my own experience? Is the rating based on how the books stacks up against similar books? Do I think it does what it’s supposed to do for the readers it wants to reach? I have it written right in my bio on Goodreads that I rate books based on how they compare to other books in the same genre. I do not like history books typically. I don’t like contemporary romance books typically. Or horror, that’s just my own taste. But occasionally I will read one, and then rate it based on that genre. It is still an honest assessment of the quality of the book! And I always write lengthy paragraphs explaining my rating. I promise I am not inflating ratings! I am not adding stars just to be nice or because I am afraid of being negative! I am very passionate about being fair and honest! There are lots of angles to come at ratings from. In my own spreadsheet, I have a column just for my enjoyment of the book based on my taste and preferences, which I use to help me understand my own taste better. That is where I will use lower ratings to help me. I appreciate you telling me that you’d like me to share ratings based on my personal enjoyment, and that is something I am planning to incorporate more in 2025. Typically I am reading books and genres I enjoy the most (fantasy and sci-fi) so my personal enjoyment and more objective insights on the book within its genre align perfectly. I hope that clears the air for you! I take your trust in us very seriously! ❤ -M
      P.s. Kristen rates on Goodreads strictly on vibes and her enjoyment, so her rating system is already aligned with your preferences. 👍👍

    i've recently migrated to fable from goodreads. i really like the prompts when you finish a book that encourage you to give a review. so much less overwhelming to me than the blank space that goodreads provides.
    you've inspired me to clean up my TBR. its inundated with 15 years of good intentions, and includes every ebook i own. if i spend the time to sort it out, maybe for once i can make a dent in it!

    I stopped rating books in 2024 because I felt like I was aiming for 5stars rather than sitting with a book and looking at what did and didn’t work for me and that was actually a huge relief. I’m still trying to get better but not focusing on a number that’s hard to standardize even within my own rating system and not feeling guilt for giving a low rating took a lot of that pressure off when searching for my next book.

    I started a digital reading journal during the first few months of 2024. It was the best! I can honestly say I remember the books I was making mood boards for SO vividly. I dropped off the remainder of the year and I definitely don’t remember the details of most stories as well as the ones I did make mood boards for. Maddie, I just joined the Hardcore Literature Bookclub on Patreon this past week because I wanted to prioritize classics as well. The new year hasn't started, but I have already had fun going through the old syllabus and lectures to get a sense of what next year will be like. It's definitely motivating and manageable, and I am so excited to tackle books that I have wanted to read for years while focusing on deep reading rather than speed reading through them. Been a lurker here for a while and love your videos! LOVE that you are thinking about StoryGraph! You can add notes in as you read in a private notes area. Their buddy read/book club features are amazing! And their review page has questions that help with writing a more mindful review (plus quarter and half stars!). It is a lot less chaotic than GR in my opinion - no ads, millions of user updates, etc... I've found my reading experience to be a lot more fun and mindful now that I've been away from GR for a few years! Hope you make the switch and enjoy!

I’m trying not to jump immediately to read what everyone is saying is their favorite book (but tbh I get such fomo), trying to slow down and be more intentional with reading what I enjoy, and not setting a reading goal at all this year. Reading started to feel more stressful when I made it too rigid.
    I use StoryGraph, fable, and goodreads and I’m drawn to StoryGraph because the rating system is much better and I like seeing the stats!

    I don’t use Goodreads anymore. Storygraph is such a good option for tracking. It seem more reading/person forward, but has community options as well. I know people who want to buddy read or book club read seem to prefer Fable. Or if they want to track other media like TV as well. Storygraph makes importing your Goodreads list very easy. I have not done that on Fable because it seems from what I can tell to allow Goodreads imports easily but doesn’t import from places like story graph as much. I don’t know as much about Fable. But moving from Goodreads seems to be a trending more and I’m here for it. It’s so behind the times.
    As for tracking, I think we should rate it as you would rate it personally. You aren’t as likely to pick up a genre you don’t like as much and I feel like there may be 5 star romance for non romance genre people and If I went to their profile and saw a romance rate 5 or 2 stars and our tastes align generally I can know which one I should pick up if I want to try one. You can always note you are not generally a reader in that genre.

    Okay, you two are my book spirit animals! Our taste is so similar. I love the intentionality in your plans for 2025. Kristen: as far as contemporary romance, it’s hard for me to give a book in this genre a five star rating, but I had a stint where I read a lot of it, and there were a select few that stood out. (For reference, my favorite contemporary romance is love and other words)… Part of Your World, Yours Truly, and Just For the Summer (all by Abby Jimenez), Emily Henry’s books, and Out on a Limb… I rated all of these five stars.
    As far as other genres, The Ember in the Ashes series is so good. It’s not technically romantasy. It’s YA fantasy, but it has a romance subplot. I read it around the time I read TOG and Six of Crows, and it was just as strong! And of course the Magnolia Parks books! Hopefully there are some in this list that you haven’t read!

I’m cancelling my Illumicrate sub for this reason as well as I plan on not adding more books in 2025. My goal is to read strictly from my TBR with the exception of series that I need to continue or a most anticipated release. Love the goodnotes idea, already planning to make a mood board for next year!
